The Laker Depth… The highlights might focus on both Stephenson and Beasley getting ejected in the second half. Beasley mixing it up with Green and then getting tossed, Stephenson ejected for what the refs thought was a swing to Cook. Really, the game wasn’t that chippy.

This was seemingly a throwaway game – the Lakers sat LeBron, BI, Rondo, KCP, Hart and Caruso, while the Warriors sat KD and played everyone else – but the Lakers bench used the game to get some quality minutes.

Svi Mykhailiuk finally got his confidence flowing in this one and led the Lakers with 22 points.

The Warriors pulled out to a big lead early on, but the Lakers were never too far behind. In the third, they started to reel them in. And once the Warriors sat their stars, the Lakers depth showed as they took over the game.

Travis Wear hit a several shots in the fourth and rookie Isaac Bonga showed the potential the team was hoping for when they drafted him. He finished the night with a 12-9-5 line as the Lakers took the 119-105 win. They outscored the Warriors 65-38 in the second half.

I don’t know if the Lakers starters got enough preseason time to hit the ground running this season…but that’s the one thing they know how to do – run. The pace is going to epic.

Ready, set, go for the regular season.

Ball -- -- That three shot has looked smooth so far this preseason. It definitely looks more natural. He needs to work on those bank attempts from the left side. Those short ones are normally pretty easy shots, but he wasn’t close on either attempt. But the three ball has looked strong. He seemed to get off to a slow start and started to pick up his impact as the game went along. Last game, he was winded in the first quarter. I think that’s still impacting him in this one. While the motor is strong, it’s not back to where he was at since he couldn’t play a lot of ball this offseason. Defensively, I’m starting to think he could be a stopper for us at three positions. He’s navigating screens and sticking with guys better than most on our team. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-8 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 6 boards, 7 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He swished a wing three on a kickout, looked smooth. He missed a short bank. Quick hit ahead to McGee after a made hoop for FTs. He found Svi for a wing jumper. He took his eyes off the ball and fumbled a pass out of bounds. He choked an uncontested layup off a cut (rushed unnecessarily as no one was around). He missed a pull-up three in transition. He kicked out to Wear for a three. He hit Svi cutting baseline for a layup. Short on a bank from the left side. Second Half: He blew a long outlet from Lance, but tipped in his miss. He tried to pushout between defenders and lost the ball. He hit Kuzma on a sharp cut for a dunk. He hit Kuzma again in transition for FTs. He swished a wing three when the D sagged off. He kicked to Kuzma for the three. He fired a pass out of bounds.

Kuzma -- -- Some superb cuts off ball to get open for scores in the third. With the passers on this team, you need guys who can do that. Love his burst of speed on those. That just fits so well with this team. The rest of his game was a little choppy like it has been at times this preseason, but he’s productive. He finished with 19 in 23 minutes and did it efficiently enough. Starting at the SF spot tonight, he spent a lot of time against Klay defensively. Tough matchup, for sure. He’s been a willing defender and is showing improvement over last season. “I felt like I got a lot of rust off,” Kuzma said of the preseason. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-13 shooting (1-3 from three, 6-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He airballed a forced hook from about 12 feet out. He missed a wing three in transition. He hit a short runner. Nice feed to Zubac trailing for FTs. He got lost in transition and gave up a dunk. Wild drive and he charged. He lost control of the ball on the break, but still drew the FTs. He hit a runner when Bonga found him curling into the paint. Way short on a wing three. He backdoored Klay for a reverse layup. He missed a jumphook across the lane. Bonga found him for FTs under the hoop, he made both. He choked a layup off a full-court pass from Lance. Second Half: He got caught in the air on the perimeter and threw it away. He got tapped on a short runner. Hard cut to the hoop after a pass off and he got the ball back for the dunk. He drew more FTs attacking in transition, he made both. He hammered down a dunk off another strong cut off Wear in the post to take a pass. He traveled off the three line. He sank a wing three off the Lonzo kickout.

McGee -- -- Really a superb preseason from McGee. This game was slightly amazing in that we saw a completely well-rounded skillset from McGee tonight. He was driving off the three line for scores, passing from the three line to cutters for scores, dribbling on the break for a score and spotting up and swishing a corner three. What’s going on here? Combine that with the dunks and shotblocks we saw all throughout the preseason and the Lakers have to be immensely pleased with how well he’s fit in with what they want to do. Crazy efficiency tonight. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He dumped it off to a cutting Lance for the layup to start the game. He attacked off the dribble and fumbled it away. He was fouled on a dunk attempt, he made both FTs. He passed up an open jumper for a forced turnaround brick. He blocked a shot on the other end. He turned into a defender and somehow threw in a score, nearly traveling. He spotted up in the corner, took the kickout and swished the three. He missed from the same spot next time down as the Warriors closed a little faster. Good job changing ends off a made basket and Lonzo found him for FTs, he made one. Nice feed from the perimeter to a cutting Beasley for a layup. Second Half: He rejected a dunk attempt at the rim. He attacked off the dribble from the three line and scored a layup. He disrupted a lob to get a stop. He drew FTs getting out on the break and attacking, he made both. Bogus travel call after he took some contact on a drive. The Warriors picked him to take Stephenson’s FTs and he made both.

Stephenson -- -- He joined Beasley in the locker room with an ejection a quarter later in the fourth. Part of the reason he may have been signed was to mix things up with the Warriors a bit. I don’t think they want him to get ejected, but the refs thought he took a swing at Cook. It was a half flail, half swing. Not much of one. Afterward the two benches got into it in a friendly way as the Warriors wanted LeBron to shoot Stephenson’s freethrows. Luke said the Lakers said no and sent McGee out there to take them. Funny. With Rondo out of this one, we depended a bit more on Stephenson to ball handle. He finished the night with 4 assists. It should have been 6 as both Lonzo and Kuzma blew layups on full-court feeds from Lance that were on the mark. Serviceable minutes tonight. He didn’t dominate the ball. He’s a fall back option. But ahead of him in the line are LeBron, Ball, Rondo and Ingram if it gets to it. Maybe even Caruso. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He scored a layup off the bounce pass from McGee to start the game. He went behind his back to Lonzo for a three. He missed a layup. He attacked, spun and got a little bailed out by the foul call, he made one FT. He missed a corner three. He was fouled on a layup attempt with no call and missed. He was called for a charge. Great full-court feed to Kuzma who choked the layup. Second Half: He was robbed of another assists off a full-court feed to Lonzo, who missed his layup before tipping it in. He gave it up a bit early to McGee on the break, but JaVale bailed him out. Change of directions off the dribble and drew FTs on a trip, he made one. He hit Svi on a cut from the corner for a layup (Wear’s ability to space the floor had the help defender in no-man’s land). Stephenson getting chippy after a drive to draw a foul (he flailed his arms to get free and it looked a little like a swing at Cook…so he was ejected).

Beasley -- -- He and Green were barking at each other and Beasley ended up getting ejected with the Lakers down 11 with just 3 minutes into the third. Somehow only Beasley picked up techs on that. The refs didn’t want him approaching Green again after the little skirmish. Let’s see if this leads anywhere later in the season. Small thing, but Green is the guy that you think about when we got guys like Lance and Beasley. Overall, he might have been a little frustrated with everything. He had picked up three fouls in the first two minutes of the game. His shots weren’t falling. Nothing was smooth. That’s about how his preseason has gone. He’s looked the worst of the Laker free agents so far. He’s usually able to at least score with some regularity, but nothing has come easily. It’ll come. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He iso’d and lost the dribble. He kicked out to McGee for three. He cut and McGee hit him from the perimeter for a layup. He ball-stopped, attacked and coughed it up, turnover. He tied up a man on D for a jumpball, then won it. In transition, though, he couldn’t control a pass and threw it away off that. Second Half: His pass was picked off to start the half. He faced up and got tapped on the 18-footer. He reversed around Green in transition.

Zubac -- -- They didn’t play him in the last game as the Warriors generally run small. He got some first half run in this game, then they deferred to Williams and McGee before finally bringing him back with 10 minutes left. The bench was encouraging him to use his size and eventually Zu started imposing it on the smaller team. He had a strong dunk through contact that was impressive. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-5 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He drew FTs on the finish, getting down court quickly on the break, he made both. Too hard on the layup attempt in transition and he missed. He overpassed when left alone in the paint, then fouled to erase a Laker score. His jumphook was rejected by the help D, had a man cutting. Second Half: He rolled to the hoop and Svi hit him for the dunk. He crammed on a dunk over a defender (should have been an And-1). He was fouled next time down on a dunk attempt, he made one FT. Another layup off the Bonga feed, Zu using his height and keeping the ball up high for the score.

Mykhailiuk -- -- As mentioned in the last write-up, Svi’s confidence just hasn’t been there this preseason. But you could see it building from the start of this one, and then he finally got comfortable and then we saw him. His whole game took off from there. He was attacking the paint for scores, hitting from the perimeter, finding teammates. Well-rounded game from the rookie and he ended up leading the team in scoring. They were some quality minutes, too, as the Warriors played their starters in the first half. He led the Lakers with 11 points on 4-9 shooting in the first half. A lot of ball handling in this one as we lacked PGs. He looked comfortable doing it. He got to cover Curry in this game as well as Klay. Welcome to the NBA, right? Huge takeaway for him. He got a taste of doing it at the next level and can build off that. Glad we finally got to see the real Svi before the preseason ended. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-18 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He swished a wing three on a kickout. Great pass to Stephenson on the break who should have been to the line off a no-call. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a step-back three. He wasn’t ready for a pass that Bonga threaded to him. He missed an open wing three in transition. He pushed out a rebound and was blocked on the break, but Bonga cleaned it up. He threw a lob before the D commit to him on the drive, turnover. He swished a wing pull-up jumper. He attacked from the wing to his right and flipped in a layup over a big. He attacked hard to his right and couldn’t finish. He missed a wing jumper. He cut baseline, hopped inbounds before the feed got to him and reversed over Klay. Second Half: He missed a corner jumper on a kickout. He couldn’t finish a drive in a crowd, looked fouled. He missed a good look at a floater. He sized up his man, attacked past him and scored the layup. He drained a wing three in transition next time down. He drew a hook foul on Bell bodying him up in the post on the other end. He attacked the paint next time down, drew the D and hit Bonga cutting for the reverse. Excellent cut from the corner to start the quarter and Lance found him for the layup. He attacked off the three line, put on the brakes, pivoted and drew FTs, he made both. Livingston went around him for a dunk as he was caught a bit flat footed. He missed a three trying to shoot one in a defender’s face. He hit Zubac rolling for a dunk. He grabbed an offensive board off a missed FT and found Williams for the score. He missed a lefty scoop on a drive. He attacked again with his left with the clock low and scored the layup. He threw it away on a final possession.

Bonga -- -- Guess who played the most minutes tonight. Bonga led the way with 32. If you remember where he was in the Summer League, he just could not get comfortable on the court. He was nervous as hell and unsure what to do. That resulted in turnover after turnover. If you watched any of his overseas footage you know he was that raw. He’s a project for sure, but the Summer League was ridiculous. So game after game this preseason, it’s started to come together slowly. Every game was seemingly an improvement on the previous one. He got quality minutes early on in this one with the Warriors playing starters. He played serviceable minutes, which is excellent. Finally, tonight with the Lakers sitting a couple PGs, Lonzo playing limited minutes and Stephenson getting ejected, we had to put the ball in his hands to run the point. “We love Bonga’s playmaking ability,” Luke said. He started probing off the dribble, finding teammates cutting, he even took a couple pull-up jumpers. Eventually, he got the bench to their feet when pulled down a defensive board and took it coast to coast for a dunk. Great to see all that confidence building. What impressed me more was probably how active he was defensively. He was calling out switches, he was decisive on rotations and challenges. His length was bothering guys. We had him on Cook late in the game and he cooled him down. Loved how well he keyed into everything on that end of the game. “Most of the time I’m confident in the game, but it also helped me a lot today,” Bonga said of the good showing. “I got to say a big thank you to all my teammates today.” Great way to end the preseason for him to build that confidence. G-League will be fun to watch. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-5 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: Nice job getting back in transition to prevent a layup. He attacked to his left from the wing and scored a layup over a defender. He scored a putback on the break off of Svi’s missed drive. He hit Kuzma curling behind him for a runner. He attacked and found Kuzma for FTs. Second Half: He hit Svi in transition for a three. He reversed off the drive and dish from Svi. He did one of his hops before attacking ont eh three line and was called for the travel. He grabbed a rebound, pushed it up court with his left at high speed, attacked a lane and hammered down a dunk (entire bench was up for that one). He came off a screen and was fouled on the pull-up wing jumper, he made both FTs. He missed a pull-up 18-footer. A little out of the reach on a hit ahead to Svi on the break. Wow, superb rotations on the perimeter multiple times to get a stop. Nice recovery and challenge to get another stop. He slithered his way into the lane and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He found Zubac in the paint for a layup.

Wear -- -- He caught fire a bit in the fourth quarter and those were the haymakers to the Warriors defense. The Lakers got separation of a series of jumpers from Wear. He was a +25 in his 27 minutes as he didn’t miss a shot from the field. I don’t know what his opportunities will look like this season, but he certainly left a good impression. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-5 shooting (3-3 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +25. The Action: He sank an open three off the kickout. Second Half: He hit Kuzma cutting down the lane for a dunk. He hit Williams cutting for a layup. He drained a wing three off a swing pass. He sank a wing three from the other side. He stepped through at the elbow and hit the jumper. He pumped and hit the wing jumper.

Williams -- -- His activity pays off. He’s really built on his summer to delivering some consistent, steady play at the next level this preseason. His perimeter shooting and freethrow shooting isn’t ready for prime time (he went 4-11 from the line tonight), but he does a good job putting himself in the right positions on both ends of the court. Defensively, he switches pretty well and moves his feet effectively at times. He had a really good challenge on Livingston on a switch in the fourth. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-9 shooting (4-11 from the line) to go with 12 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He missed a hook across the lane. He attacked to his left and scored a layup. He was fouled on the offensive glass, he made both FTs. He faked a hook with his right, spun the other way and hit with his left. He hit rim on a high-low lob pass. He got hit on a jumphook with no call and missed. He couldn’t finish the layup off the two-man game. He blew past Green and scored an And-1 layup as Green tried to wrap him up, he missed the FT. Second Half: He gathered a tricky pass and flipped in a layup over the D. He drew FTs and made one. He was held on a roll and drew FTs, he made one. He blocked a drive. Great D on Livingston to force a miss on his pull-up. He was fouled in the paint, he missed both, Svi got it back to him and he hit the short push shot. He was fouled on a switch, he missed both again. Interior feed to Zubac for the dunk.

Walton -- -- McGee sat for Zubac, Lakers down 6 after 4+ minutes… Svi in for Beasley, sliding Kuzma to the PF… The lead ballooned for the Warriors as expected… Bonga in for Stephenson with 5 minutes left… Williams in… Warriors still have Steph and Klay out there… Wear in for Kuzma… The Lakers trailed 38-29 after the first. Not bad actually considering the G-League lineups we ran for the half the quarter… Kuzma, Williams, McGee, Svi, Bonga… Stephenson in for Svi… Bonga in with the starters… Lakers down 10 with McGee, Beasley, Kuzma, Svi and Ball… He then went with Williams, Beasley, Bonga, Svi and Ball… The Lakers trailed 67-54 at the half. The Lakers had 13 turnovers to the Warriors 5 and lost the break 16-9… Curry not starting in the second half… Beasley ejected. Wear in now, Lakers down 13 after the two techs… The Lakers cut the lead down to 5 and the Warriors called timeout… They cut it to 1… Bonga in for Stephenson… Kuzma out for Svi, Lakers down 4. Williams in for McGee… Williams, Wear, Bonga, Svi, Stephenson lineup down 1 with 3 minutes left… That unit took an 86-83 lead heading into the fourth… Stephenson was tossed… Zubac came and in Bonga ran the point… They pulled out to a 13 point lead with 5 minutes left…

Thanks DB once again!

Fun game to watch, and it's great seeing what happens to SVI and Bonga once a bit of confidence starts to trickle in.

Lonzo with strength to go to the rim and a 3 point shot that looks smooth, and excellent defense. Nice start.

Kuz did well too, particularly in his later action.

Now it's time for the real games to begin. GO LAKERS!!!!

Thanks DB

What a fun game to watch.

Lonzo's 3 pt shot looked good plus his passing. He seems to have taken a stop up.

Kuz just doesn't seem to have shown bit improvements from last year yet. He looks out of sorts to me and everything seems just a tiny bit off.

SVI looked like he did in Summer League. He just needs to be on the floor more and get into a rhythm

Bonga looked really good and his improvement from summer league is significant. You can see he has good court vision and he plays good defense plus he can rebound. I think he must be closer to 6'9" or 10".

Stephenson and Beasley have not impressed me so far.

Like the ball movement when SVI, ZO and Bonga were on the floor together.

DB,

Great write-up as usual!

This game was more than I expected. I fell asleep (watched it late) and the Lakers end up winning!

Stephenson did make two home run passes on the break that were very impressive. He is a work in progress, but his in-your-face toughness is needed.

Beasley has been garbage but the season hasn't begun yet.

Kuz needs to get in his stride which should come, but he needs to give the ball up on breaks where other players are ahead of him. He trys to do it all himself sometimes.

Bonga has made huge strides! He actually looks like he can be an NBA player. He needs to work on his jumper and handles--but he is worth waiting on.

McGee has been very impressive. That three ball form looks very nice. I really wish we had gotten Boogie to go along with McGee and we would have been very nice at the center spot.

Svi showed his true full game tonight, shooting, driving, dishing, rebounding and defense. He is a player and needs some run during the regular season. Good pickup!

Ball is going to be a player! His three ball is 100% better looking and more natural. I hope he takes more as the season progresses. He needs to work on making about a million layups though!

Zu- I still have hope for, but he is still a work in progress and might not be on this team next year..... or by the trade deadline.

This team will be very fun to watch and could be very dangerous come playoff time!

Great points DB, loved the 2nd half of the game.

I saw a article that rated the Lakers Bench as #4 in the NBA.

Can't wait to see how this team gels and excels...

My one wish is that Wagner was healthy, he could have used the preseason as much, if not more than anyone..

Thats like me and sports betting.

Lakers and Dodgers NEVER win when I sports bet on them..

Sorry fellas for Dodgers game 1 loss. (I actually bet that they win the series too, SORRY!)

I joke that maybe I should bet on other team.

I was very encouraged by Lonzo these last two preseason games. Kuzma looks bouncier as well.

I think that SVI’s, Beasley and Kuzma’s stocks all took hits while McGee and Lonzo looked better than expected.

Thanks, DB.

Bonga has come so far, so quickly since the summer, that it's very encouraging vis a vis his ultimate ceiling. His footwork was so bad in the summer, I was almost convinced he grew up playing by different rules regarding traveling. He's also far more athletic than the initial Kyle Anderson comparisons (and pre-draft videos) would've indicated.

I also think Wear has done everything he possibly could have done thus far (including last year) to earn a spot on the roster, and don't see where more G League time will benefit him. I see the value for the team in having him secured via the two-way, but I don't think he was the ideal candidate for one of those spots.
