Jerry West is a bit of an enigma, truth be told. He's basketball-sharp, energetic, and driven, but he is also hyper-sensitive, thin-skinned, fairly insecure, and impossible to make himself happy. He's never been happy with his post-playing situ - ever. He seems incapable of happiness. My brother has played golf with Jerry many times, and the man implodes mid-round every outing emotionally, despite carrying a 5 handicap in his late seventies.

I think JW left here and left every job since because he perceived being slighted as a consultant, and he just can't tolerate that. Good luck with that attitude. Collaboration is the heart of team management; West is the anti-collaborator, he must have total control. I love Jerry West as a Laker player and Laker GM, but the man cannot observe someone else having influence over him and be well with it.

Great post. Would love to hear some stories from your brother, if you/he don't mind sharing. Sounds like he's golfed with some very interesting people!

One story that I can share from personal experience is from 2009, when I guested with my brother in Jerry's group at Riviera.

Jerry hit the flag stick on the par three #4 at Riviera, which was cut that day low right and tight to the front. A tough location. His aggressive shot clanked and fell to rest not even six inches from the cup. A bird is helluva shot on that hole and he holed his putt. Jerry grimaced though, no smile and everyone quietly congratulating him. We heard him gripe walking off the green that he should be able to hit it that close every time. That's just crazy talk, but it remains memorable and personal in its illustration of just how driven and how unreasonably unhappy he was with himself. People dream of making two on that hole, a place Ben Hogan dubbed the finest par 3 in this country. You'd think a birdie there would yield pleasure, but it did not for Jerry West.

Clips have a team (w/exception of SGA) chock full of veteran role players. They are playing well right now but in the playoffs, the lack of a bona fide star will catch up.

A lot of the wins this season so far are because of Harris and Lou Williams. Neither will likely be their next season.

The question is, who will they be replaced with?

Some players good enough to keep them on the treadmill of mediocrity most likely.

They seem to be better than mediocre right now though.

The plan seems to have been to create cap space for next year, and they somehow put together a team that's winning instead of tanking. Ballmer knew that doing a "Process" like the Sixers would be death for that franchise in LA, so he prioritized a winning product. Whether or not it'll be good enough to lure a star free agent, we'll have to see.

If they actually make the playoffs with this squad, they will definitely get some interest from some of the free agents for this upcoming offseason. Lets face it if a superstar wins a championship with the Clippers they will pretty much be a guaranteed all time great considering how awful that team is.

Chemistry and diamonds in the rough like Montrezl Harrell, Tobias Harris, etc. Face it a lot of their roster is composed of players who were passed over on other teams or never given a chance.

This year's Clips appear to be a regular season oddity so far. Not sure any team with such a collection of undistinguished individual guys can win a playoff series, but weird things happen sometimes. When the Pistons won their 2004 title, I was reminded how at rare times we see team synergy powerfully summoned almost wholly by player fit and inter-player chemistry rather than on the basis of the talent of their top two or three players' individual talents.

They had several all stars.

Chauncey/Rip are borderline (unlikely HOFers) and Rasheed/Ben Wallace were devastating interior defenders. And Prince was the shutdown artist.

Need we forget the ultimate #2 pick human victory cigar in DARKO?

That was exactly my point, the extent to which they're an outlier talent-wise at the top, a far cry from 95% of the NBA champions of the past twenty years. Most championship teams had two or three assured future HoFers. I think Billups is the only sure HoF entrant, maybe eventually Ben Wallace. But the player fit and the rotation was stout.

So the clippers can sign both Kawhi and kd next year? Seems like a possibility with Jerry west at the helm.

(bleep) you magic. He came to you first and you said no. Now we have to live with the fact a laker legend is with the most despised franchise in the western conference. Really magic? Do you think your level of expertise in operations compares to 40 years of Jerry west. Not only you said no but your ego pissed him off so much that he went to the clippers

Seriously

(bleep) you magic. You better hope the lakers get some good players and start winning real soon

Another bag of piss, there, 9s.
