No Depth, No Energy… “We’re a team built on energy and depth,” LeBron said afterward. With Ingram, Rondo and Beasley already out, the Lakers lost McGee just prior to the game with the illness. So much for depth. How about energy?

The Lakers struggled to find their defensive flow out of the gate with JaVale McGee sidelined. They quickly trailed by 18 in the first quarter, but cut that down 10 after 12 minutes – still anyone’s game, but the energy was looking sad early.

John Wall worked off screens to pick on slower defenders as well as get out in transition for scores. He’d finish with 28 of the Wizards 71 first half points. The Lakers now down by 20 at the half.

No strong push from the Lakers in the third quarter tonight. They’d lose that quarter, as well. Luke would try mixing things up with a zone, but that only made the defense look worse. By the end of the night, the Lakers got outrebounded 51-43 the worst rebounding team in the league. No depth, no energy.

The Lakers fell 128-110 with no one to pick up for LeBron, who scored only 13 points and didn’t show up on the other end, either.

“We did not have the proper energy to win an NBA game tonight,” Luke said.

LeBron -- -- Really not a strong effort from LeBron in this one. Just one of those veteran back-to-back games where he’s not going all out. Very noticeable on the defensive end. Just 9 points on 4-13 shooting in the first half. He’d finish with 13 points in 32 minutes. That was a season-low. With as bad as we were playing D, no scoring from LeBron was going to make this a tough one. He struggled a bit from the line and sat at the end of the third quarter. Hard to survive that starting lineup’s defense. Seemed like only Lonzo and sometimes Kuzma with an effort. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-16 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and no fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He swished a pull-up from the top of the key. He missed a step-back wing three. He missed a tough drive. He attacked baseline and muscled in a reverse. He missed a lefty layup attempt. Interior feed to Kuzma for a layup. He hit KCP for a three. Speed into the offensive zone on the inbounds and he scored a layup easily. He pushed it up, attacked and powered in a layup. He missed a floater at the buzzer and wanted the foul. He missed a deep three. He attacked and threw it away. He missed in the post. He attacked in transition and drew FTs at the rim, clocking a defender in the chin on the finish attempt, he made one. He rejected a drive at the rim. He tried to thread a backdoor pass and it was picked off. He got backdoored, ballwatching to give up a dunk. He was blocked on a step-through. He posted up and was blocked. He attacked and was blocked by the rim on the layup finish. Second Half: He threw a pass out of bounds instead of taking the open three. He got caught in the air and threw it away. He didn’t match in transition and it led to an open three. He attacked, spun and missed. He turned the corner with speed and was fouled on his way to the rim, he missed both FTs. He missed a layup off two big steps and didn’t get back in transition. He spun baseline in the post and scored a layup. He hit Moe on the slip screen for a layup. He muscled his way to the front of the rim for FTs, he made both this time.

Ball -- -- I’ve never seen him more angry at a ref at a no call after getting clobbered by Wall as Lonzo tried to dunk on the break. He bounced up and a teammate held him back from the ref. It was not even close to a block as Wall just plowed through him. (More funny is Wall play to the crowd like he just rejected Lonzo with a great defensive play instead of clobbering him). Not a strong offensive outing from Lonzo. He sank a couple of threes in seven attempts (the rest of the starters were 0-11 from three, which help congest the paint). Defensively, our two-man schemes did Lonzo no favors nor slow Wall when we switched. While Lonzo was in on a couple of blocks on Wall in transition, we didn’t do a good job limiting some of those easy transition scores, either. Last night, we had a good team effort on the screens with Kemba and the bigs helping well so Lonzo could recover and smother. Tonight, the team effort was poor and typically caught in no-man’s land. “It was just one of those days,” Lonzo said of their defensive play tonight. Not sure what the ultimate breakdown was on who Wall scored on, but it was a pretty wide cross selection of Lakers. Lonzo had 3 steals and 2 blocks defensively. Lonzo finished the night with about his averages scoring-wise. They need more than that with LeBron is not up to his usual self. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-11 shooting (2-7 from three) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He was stripped in the post. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He missed a step-back sideline three. Quick-fire corner three in transition and he buried it. He got caught in the air and threw it away. He crossed over and missed the pull-up from 14 feet. He rejected Wall in transition, not an easy play to defend. He traveled in transition, leaving his feet to pass, then trying to score. He forced Wall into a brick in transition. Great D disrupting a lob pass out of a timeout on help D. He missed a wing three. He was clobbered on the break by Wall with no call and bounced up irate at the ref. Second Half: He swiped a pass and took it the other way for a layup. He missed a wing three. He hit Kuzma for a dunk in transition. He swiped another pass in the paint and took it for a layup. He missed a sideline three. He swished a corner three in transition. Double dribble changing his mind on a pass.

Kuzma -- -- He had more turnovers than points in the first half with 5. He was just making a lot of bad decisions. Attacking multiple defenders seemed to be a theme in some of those. Better second half as he was able to get some transition scores. We also put him on Wall defensively later in the game to help get that length around him with the way Luke wanted to play the screens. He did well with that. Those 6 turnovers, however, were a killer. Seemed to suck some of the fight from the team and snowball for the Wizards. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 9-15 shooting (0-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 6 turnovers and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: He attacked in the post out of a timeout and couldn’t get the ball over the rim. His pass was deflected as he tried to fire it through defenders. He didn’t shoot the open three, attacked a crowd instead and threw it away. He scored a layup off an interior feed. He was called for a charge to erase a layup. He attacked from the corner and hit the short hook. He traveled on the break trying to beat two defenders. He spun and lost the ball, turnover. Lost in transition he gave up a dunk. Second Half: He was rejected badly by a help defender. He hammered down a dunk in transition. He missed a three, got it back, attacked and scored a layup. He missed a wing three. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He swiped a pass, pushed it out with speed, left his feet early but still scooped it in. He missed a three on iso. He took the long pass in transition, faked and was fouled on the layup attempt, he made both FTs. He forced his man out of bounds and it ignited a break in which he scored on. He attacked in transition and scored a layup.

Hart -- -- Really did not like his defense in the first half. I’m not sure he did much right on that end. He got ate by Wall, and the Wizards were actively looking for Josh on switches (or when we matched him up, uggh). “He’s a good guard, quick, shifty,” Hart said. He may have missed McGee the most. KCP was a much better option in this game because of his footspeed and that he nearly matched Wall with 20 points of his own in the first half. So on those switches instead of seeing Hart in front of him, it would be KCP. Whenever that happened there was much more resistance. Luke sat Hart after his second half stint and didn’t bring him back. Too late then. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-10 shooting (0-5 from three) to go with 1 block and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -26. The Action: He drained an 18-footer straight away to start the game. Way short on a turnaround in the middle of the paint. He got back cut and gave up a dunk. He missed a wing three. He was rejected badly from behind by Bryant. He missed a three out of a timeout. He scored a layup on the break with KCP. He gave up a put-back score. Second Half: He gave up a three to Wall. He hesitated under the hoop with a pump fake allowing the D to catch up and he was promptly rejected, he then fouled. He missed a wing three. He missed an open corner three.

Chandler -- -- That -29 in 20 minutes. They really missed McGee. To start this game, it almost seemed like the Lakers were playing like they had JaVale behind them and in transition defensively instead of Chandler. But rim protection wasn’t there and Chandler, of course, can’t change ends like McGee in transition. His drop coverage against Wall was useless. Basically allowing a two-on-one against Ball at times. With Chandler, they really needed to just take the ball out of Wall’s hands with more aggressive coverage at the screen and have others beat them once the ball is passed a couple of times. It was just too easy when Chandler was out there. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 7 boards, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 20 minutes. The Action: No hop in his legs to finish a layup off the nice bounce pass from Lonzo. Unable to control a bounce pass down the middle of the lane, turnover. He cleaned up the LeBron dribble penetration. He rejected a reverse. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Stephenson -- -- A little bit of a push by our deep bench late in the game forced some Wizard timeouts. That was Lance running things then. Of course, the lead was big and the Wizards were in coast mode. Lance would pick up another tech in this game off a foul. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-8 shooting (3-6 form three, 1-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He was stripped from behind on a pushout, score the other way. He missed a corner three. He pushed it up, hesitated, attacked and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a corner three. Second Half: He held Wall for FTs, then picked up a tech. He attacked, spun and scored a layup. He sank a three behind a screen. He coughed up the ball on iso. He hit Wagner rolling for a layup. He swished a step-back wing three. He attacked, bumped a defender and drew a whistle for FTs, he missed both. He sank a three trailing the break. He was picked from behind in transition again. He missed a deep three. He missed a chuck at the end of the game.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- One of the few to step with with LeBron struggling. He had a strong 20-point first half on 7-7 shooting. With as badly as Hart was playing on both ends, I would have started KCP in the second half. Sorry, Josh. He just had his shot going, but was also hustling. Even some iso plays by KCP tonight, pull-ups off the dribble or drives to create for others. He led the team in both points and assists, but no one else really joined him out there tonight. “It just felt like we were lackadaisical out there,” KCP said. He said they gave Wall whatever he wanted offensively. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 9-12 shooting (4-6 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He swished a three in transition. He scooped up a loose ball and took it for a layup. He made a tech. He pushed it up and hit a pull-up three. He filled the lane on the break and scored a layup. He hit Hart for a layup in transition. He sank a corner three in transition. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He crossed over and hit the baseline jumper. He curled into the paint, took the pass and was fouled on the layup attempt, he made both. Second Half: Short on a wing three. He took a dribble to his left and sank a wing three in early offense. Nice D switching on three players and eventually knocking a ball out of bounds. He sank an 18-footer off the two-man sequence. Off-balance on a corner three and he airballed badly in transition. He iso’d and found Moe for a layup. He missed a forced floater.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Svi got 27 minutes tonight. You’d hope he would have had a lot more impact, but the three ball wasn’t falling. Still, the team played well when he was out there. He scored on a step-back wing jumper on iso and finished an And-1 through Wall (that one, you could make a case wasn’t a foul on Wall…but not the Ball one). I like that he had a couple of steals, but was probably more impressed with the charge he took on Wall beating him to a spot on the floor with some nice anticipation on a switch. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (0-3 form three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals and 3 turnovers in 27 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: Chandler wanted a lob and Svi threw a straight pass, turnover. He attacked right, stepped back and hit the pull-up jumper from the wing. He airballed a corner three on a low kickout. He sized up a man in transition, elevated, took contact and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Second Half: He drew a charge on Wall on a switch off the screen. Nice ball fake but he missed the three. He missed a wing three. He swiped a kickout, pushed it out and got it to Kuzma for a layup. His kickout was picked off. He couldn’t finish a tough lob. He broke up a lob in transition.

Wagner -- -- “I though Moe and KCP were the bright spots for us,” Luke said. He was actually a +4 as our C in his first half minutes, but we didn’t bring him back in the half after that stint (apparently Luke not recognizing his solid play in the first half). In the second half, some decent minutes but we put him as the C in this awful zone D that clearly the Lakers haven’t worked on…ever. At least I hope not. So that ruined any momentum that they were developing again with Moe on the floor. Wished they would have gone straight man because that zone decision ruined the effort by the group when Moe was out there. That three ball was looking smooth again by Moe. The floor spaced more. I hope they start running Moe more against our starters in practice so they can work on playing against a stretch big. And Moe can bang with NBA bigs and work on his strength and rebounding. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He was stripped on the bounce pass. Good challenge at the trim to get a stop. He tapped out an offensive board. Leaning too far forward on a three and he missed. He swished a three in early offense from the top of the arc. Second Half: He gave up two offensive boards on one defensive stand. He reversed on the slip screen with LeBron. He took a tough pass and muscled in a layup on the roll. He swished a pick and pop wing three with a man on, very nice. He scored a layup on the drive and dish from KCP. He attacked off the three line and missed a layup. He missed a corner three.

Bonga -- -- He checked in the game so Wall could hit a three over him late in the game to get his 40. Not sure why Wall was in there so long. Good seeing all our rookies getting minutes. Svi, obviously, was the last picked but the first one to slip into the rotation. Moe now got a little quality time with McGee out, but his time has still be sparse. Bonga is still in blowout minutes. He scored a layup as well as assisted on a lob to Zubac (that Bonga probably should have taken for a layup or dunk himself. Still, good to see him just getting some run on the floor at this level. He’s been picking things up quick and we really could use some more length defensively if he can get himself acclimated. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board and 1 assist in 4 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He scored a layup off the short-roll feed from Zubac. He lobbed to Zu for a score (should have taken the open layup). He attacked in transition and drew FTs.

Zubac -- -- Zu was very chatty with his former teammate, Bryant, on the other squad. Not exactly sure why the kept Zubac over Bryant, especially if we were bringing back a floor spacing big in Lopez this offseason. Maybe they though Moe was going to take that role (although he doesn’t have quite the strength yet). Bryant would finish with 8 points, 11 boards and 2 blocks getting 28 minutes. Zu had a nice dunk in transition and finished a lob, as well. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 6 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He denied Bryant at the rim. He threw down a two-handed jam changing ends with speed. Feed off the short roll to Bonga for the layup. He finished a lob in transition. XXX

Walton -- -- Chandler starting for McGee and the D in the paint looks sluggish. It was a last-minute change as they couldn’t get an IV in McGee’s veins apparently. Who’s lacking the skills?... Quick timeout after three minutes as the Lakers trailed 12-4… Ball out for Lance after 5 minutes, lakers down big… Chandler out for Moe… Timeout down 24-8… A 4-minute dry spell for the Lakers with some crappy turnovers and bricks. … KCP and Svi in for Hart and Kuzma… The Lakers trailed 33-23 after the first quarter… Chandler, Kuzma, Svi, KCP and Lonzo… Hart in for Svi, LeBron in Kuzma, Lakers down 12… Timeout midway through the quarter down 15… Down 17 when a timeout came. Refs horrible… Hart out for Svi with 1:26 left (should have sat him a while ago)… The Lakers trailed 71-51 at the half. Wall had 28 points and 1 assist… Timeout when the two-man coverage was giving up scores early. It’s basically Lonzo getting picked off at the screen with little help from anyone else as Chandler is in the drop coverage and no one else is rotating… They put Kuzma on Wall out of that to get more length on the screen on D… Hart just awful still… KCP in for Hart, Svi for Lonzo, Moe for Chandler (who has also been a poor contributor)… Lance in for Kuzma, Lakers down 24… Zone out of a deadball and we gave up an open shot, an offensive board and And-1 layup on that defensive stand… LeBron is phoning this one in… The Lakers trailed big 99-76 heading into the fourth… Wagner, Stephenson, Lonzo, KCP, Svi lineup… They cut it to 17 after 3 minutes to force a timeout. A couple threes by Lance and one by Moe… This stupid Laker zone, though, will be a rally killer. They aren’t even close to anyone defensively. Sure enough, a timeout after a couple open scores. Please make this zone go away… Kuzma in, but we kept the zone. Oh boy…Zu in... Bonga in for Kuzma… Garbage time complete...

Moe was a positive. Think he should get a lil more burn in competitive games, especially when Brandon comes back and if he gets more run with the 2nd unit.

That was tough to watch.

Our starters shot 2/18 from 3 and had 15 turnovers between them.
That's a lot of trips coming up empty.

What a stinker.

Reminds me that letting Bryant go when we needed a stretch center made no sense. Which also makes me thing about how FO screwed up the Randle situation. Randle would have been our 2nd best player by a wide margin.

At this point I would only have one ">" lol. If ZU had more minutes his confidence and production would likely go up. No chance at this point with McGee and Chandler.

Once the Lakers figured out that the refs wouldn't protect their safety or reward them for trying to make impactful plays on both ends of the floor, the team quit.

Kind of okay with that. No one else got hurt.

These are the type of games that show the importance of depth.

If Ingram and Rondo are available, maybe things turn out different. It’s a double edged sword with Kuz and Hart. Yes, they are good players but you can see the slippage with extended minutes and a compressed schedule.

Every team goes through injuries, but depth is still important over an 82 game season. The wizards took advantage, moving on...

I am not convinced. Randle's PER of 22.8 this season is very good (LINK). It indicates that Randle is filling in the box scores very well. His RPM (overall) and DRPM (defensive), which try to measure how well the team does when he is on the floor, are not nearly as pretty. His overall RPM is -0.26 placing him a couple of spots below Kuzma (LINK). His DRPM--and strong man on man defense isn't measured well in a box score--places Randle at #92 of 94 PFs at -1.32 (LINK). For whatever reason, his DRPM seems to indicate that when Randle is on the court, the other team's scoring goes up significantly--and the overall RPM indicates that Randle's offense isn't enough to make up for that difference. For those who think that scoring defense and the team increasing it lead while a player is on the court should be a part of deciding who the 2nd best player is, Randle has some hurdles to overcome.

Just looking at pure RPM Randle ranks 39 out of 94 PF's which isn't too shabby. We can dig in and look at stats to fit any narrative but from the outside looking in, Randle has had a pretty good season.

I think the best argument for Randle is his PER of 22.8 which is really outstanding. I agree that Randle has had an interesting season. I just am not sure that if the Lakers had kept him that he would be the Lakers second best player. There have been games, however, in which his skill set would have turned a game that was a Lakers' loss into a win.
