Different positions and very different players, but who do you think was better? Both were the top sixth man in the NBA for a stretch and I'd rate both as borderline all-stars.
Odom was a lot more versatile and could do a lot of things well (rebound, handle, pass, defend, score, even hit threes at 39% during his last season with us) but Lou has a level of consistency and mental toughness which he didn't have. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:
Lou Williams is more reliable. Odom was really inconsistent. He would go out an have a triple double, and then next game come back with 4 points and 2 rebounds.
Both play different positions though. But if I had to pick, I'd go with Williams. He would have been deadly alongside Kobe, spaced the floor well, and given defenses another perimeter threat to worry about. _________________ (bleep) David Stern.
There is a reason Lou has been on 6 different teams... _________________ “Always remember... Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.”

If you at all care about defense rebounding and the other apsects of the game this isn’t even a contest.
Lamar much more valuable.
Since when was Odom considered a good defensive player?
In the championship years, he was quite possibly the most important defender on the team. He became a very good defender. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel
Odom was born in South Jamaica, Queens, New York City, to Joe Odom and Cathy Mercer.[3] His father was a heroin addict, and Odom's mother died of colon cancer when he was twelve years old.[4][5] At her deathbed, Odom's mom told him: "Be nice to everybody".[6] Afterwards, he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Mildred Mercer.[3]

Odom had three children, Destiny (b. 1998),[89] Lamar Jr. (b. 2002)[90] and Jayden (2005–2006), with Liza Morales before they separated.[24] On June 29, 2006, 6½-month-old Jayden died from sudden infant death syndrome while sleeping in his crib in New York.[20][91] At the time, Odom was already in town for the funeral of an aunt.[13] Odom developed a relationship with his father, who became drug-free; however, he remains closer to his high school coach, Jerry DeGregorio, who he calls [his] "white dad".[3][6] DeGregorio is the godfather to Destiny and Lamar Jr.[3]
It's a tough question because each of their ideal roles is so vastly different.
Lou is capable of being a literal number one option. He has that skill set. However, if he's your best player/scorer, you're never going to win anything important. With the right pieces, he might be able to get a team to the playoffs (not in today's Western conference, of course).
Meanwhile, if Lamar Odom is your number one option, you could probably contend for the worst team in the NBA every single year. That said, on the right team, Odom is obviously capable of championship levels contributions when given that third banana role because of his excellent facilitation, defense, and rebounding.
I think Lou getting 30+ minutes on a true championship level team is a much trickier proposition because of his defense. Also, if a team already has a dominant scorer, he becomes somewhat redundant for large portions of the game while his lack of size is a big problem on the other end.
In a vacuum, I struggle to see how anyone would pick Odom. Lou is a guy who can go and get 30+ in NBA games with semi-regularity. In the context of constructing an NBA team, though? I think it is easier to see where Odom slots in on a championship contender and he probably costs you less cap space in the process.
They were/are completely different players, one a specialist (scorer) and the other a good all-arounder with size and versatility. In ways similar to making a compare of the old 1970's Datsun 240Z to a fine Honda Accord of a decade later, I find player comparisons this disparate to reveal little about greatness.

I always thought of Lamar as more of a Volvo 1800e

Odom played center in crunch time when the Lakers wanted length and speed, and rebounding at the end of games. Remember he would guard the inbound passes to from other teams. Bynum, especially with the injuries was too slow.
Too bad Odom couldn't put it all together every year.
Lou on the other hand could shoot better and was more consistent and mentally stable.
Still take Odom.

I feel like that OKC playoff series that the Lakers lost under Mike Brown really showed how much Odom was missed. Neither Bynum nor Gasol was fast enough to guard the pick and roll and just kept getting burned over and over.
Let's say we hadn't tried to trade for CP3 and just returned with the same team + an MMLE point guard (instead of McRoberts). How far does that team get? I feel like Mike Brown had basically the right idea against OKC-- pound it inside and slow them down. _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:
Odom brought more to the game. Williams can score, and that's all (not that it isn't important, but I think it's harder to find players that can do the little stuff).

I remember that year when we "reloaded" with Blake and Barnes and began to feature Bynum. It was funny that out of ALL the talking heads, Jerry West said in a local interview that he sees team speed being an issue. He was literally the only one that made that warning (including almost ALL of LG). It was incredible how prescient he proved to be. Those years felt like we'd start a game 15 points down because you just knew there'd be a few turnovers that would be an automatic 2 points since we could barely stop those runouts.
As far as the poll, I'd take LO by a country mile. Every blue moon, he can produce buckets like Lou. Lou on the other hand couln't replicate LO's rebounding, defense and ball movement if his life depended on it. _________________ KOBE
they are so different. both are amazing. i think most dont consider odom to be all that good, but we laker fans know better. i think odom is an all timer, but thats ridiculous to say. lou is very good, not as rare of a bird as odom though. we trashed lou his whole time here (the fans)...all this about he needs the ball in his hands, not that valuable, he's going to take away from the development of our young guys...bunch of nonsense. amazing player, look what he's doing. now everyone will say how they never said those things. good thing its all over the forums.
