Jordan was lucky that he played during ESPN’s formative years, they rode him to ratings. Along with Stern morphing from publicizing team to publicizing stars. Jordan isn’t the greatest now and isn’t the greatest of all time. Most highly publicized? Possibly with Lebron running a close second.

ESPN didn't even rights to the NBA when MJ played. They only had rights to college basketball back then. Back when MJ played the TV rights went to CBS followed by NBC, while the national TV cable games were on TNT and TBS.

Ventura thinks Kareem is GOAT

He is correct.

when including off court it's not even close...

Well, he was non-friendly to media for a long time.

He was most dominant in the 70s, an era that is mostly forgotten and preserved badly, also rogue back in that day

Bye.

He was also a activist. He was with Ali at the Cleveland Summit. LINK I believe his personality is part reason he hasn't been made a coach.

this is the central argument of basketball and sports. the candidates are mj, magic, bird, kareem, wilt, russell, kobe, maybe some others who cares.

for the general population the answer is mj. mj had it all. there is not really much to criticize about mj. the safest bet.

the REAL answer is kobe. if we're talking just skills and who did basketball the best, its kobe. still is. everyone says so, all the players, mj himself. everyone. most fans and media will NEVER accept this and its controversial. he had legal issues in colorado which soiled the image needed to be the popular choice. so what, he will still beat all the others at basketball. ventura, for example, is a product of the Colorado thing...she will never be able to get past that. and that goes for a whole lot of people. but it has nothing to do with basketball. eg...kobe dropped a buzzer beater while on trial.

the new candidates like lebron and curry are nonsense. lebron sucks at basketball, but he has good numbers. this is good for all the people now who like to throw numbers around. lebron will lose to everyone on this list at actual basketball unless they are a foot shorter than him, which is nobody.

the other REAL answers are the great big men of the past. not shaq. not russell really. but Wilt and Kareem and whoever else can hold a candle to that. These guys will never come around again. This has to do with time and place and stuff that can only happen sometimes. Like Alexander the Great or Hitler, these guys are the rarest. Kobe MJ cannot beat Wilt and Kareem at basketball. would not happen. eg...(take their primes) Kobe MJ vs Wilt Kareem. up to 11. 10 game series. Wilt Kareem will win all 10, and the score will average about 11-2. This is not about goddam numbers, this is about physics...gravity etc.

Then you have the "team" guys like RUssell. Decent enough argument. it's a team game right? well then stop asking who the best player is. ask who the best team was. So whatever. not sure what to say about that.

Magic/Bird. Good choices too, but individually both would lose to kobe and mj.

Curry? lol.

Oscar? Pistol Pete? great choices, but didnt have the right kind of careers. but definitely food for thought if you want to screw with people's arguments.

nobody playing right now is even close. not really their fault, the nba is ridiculous right now. they should not even call it nba and call it something else until they sort it out. maybe the legalized gambling will calm things down. dont hold your breath. the amount of traveling alone that is being allowed is just bizarro world.

shaq? our lovable big dude? sorry. wilt would eat him for lunch. you should hear what shaq says about wilt.

at the stage the game is at right now, its going to be very very hard to deliver another mj type persona. kobe was the last. kobe said as much years before he retired. you really have to be even more of a psycho in this day and age to even come within the vicinity of this kind of territory. curry is far too well adjusted to be that guy, and way too short. nobody has any edge anymore. the money is probably too much at this point to recover. it doesnt help that the nba is super anti-psycho friendly now either. top priority is avoiding any type of psycho behavior, but that's really what makes for greatness. look what happened to arenas...now he's forgotten. that guy was better than curry.

you need the insanity. most of the fans are holding onto their numbers and advanced metrics like safety blankets. kobe=psycho. mj=psycho. magic=psycho. bird=psycho. kareem=psycho. wilt=psycho. russell=psycho.

kawhi recently talked about channeling his kobe/mj. i dont know what he means by that but kawhi is a sweethart. this series with curry is like sweethart vs sweet boy. gimme a break.

I don't think I've ever encountered anyone who actually factors in off-the-court stuff in ranking players, unless they are using the off-the-court stuff to bolster their case for a guy they already like.
