Beating Up On The Warriors... The Lakers got to work on their non-LeBron minutes as LBJ sat out this one against the Warriors. Typically, these have been our worst minutes.

They certainly were early on as the starters had no chemistry and little purpose with Rondo orchestrating in the first half in LeBron’s place.

Things changed quickly after halftime. The Laker guards attacked the rim consistently, and the starters extended the lead to 14 before the bench came in. From there, the bench extended it to 25 by the end of the third.

It was a dominating 40-17 third quarter that ended the Warriors. They cleaned up the turnovers, extended their defense to force Warrior mistakes and cruise.

The Lakers would get into some extended garbage time run, holding the Warriors to a 34-point second half as they took the game 116-86.

Davis -- -- Nice to see us able to rest LeBron and keep AD’s minutes to just 25 in this one. The Warriors bigs were in trouble in this one. The Lakers just had too many bigs they could throw at them. He had 15 points on 4-9 shooting in 15 first half minutes. Mostly perimeter scores or points from the line. He wasn’t finishing around the rim well in the first half. But it didn’t matter. We were still able to shut down the Warriors offense. We could pressure on the perimeter knowing we always had a big or two to protect the paint. He had the highlight play of the night with a steal on the perimeter, going behind his back to Kuzma as AD went into the crowd. Kuzma then took it for an And-1 dunk. That might have been his last play of the night. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 6-13 shooting (1-3 from three, 10-12 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +17.

Green -- -- Pretty much a nothing game from him. He choked a lefty layup on his only attempt. He played average D, but nothing special. Kind of was a warm body out there. Not having LeBron can impact his looks as we don’t get that consitent inside-out action. His lone assist was a lob to McGee that was a little awkward (which is often the case with his lobs). Vogel sent him to the bench somewhat early in the second half. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 assist and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +5.

McGee -- -- Some rare minutes for the Rondo/McGee combo. Rondo has a little chemistry with the other two bigs, but not much time with McGee. McGee had a team-low -8 in the first half. Part of that is being on the court with Rondo instead of LeBron, but Dwight certainly looked much better out there than McGee early on. In the second half, Bradley set him up for a couple lobs. Then we finally saw a Rondo drive and dish for a dunk and set him up for a lob and McGee came to life off that dribble penetration. Good to see them figure that out and start to build a little chemistry. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-6 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +4.

Bradley -- -- He helped scratch out some points for the starters when they were struggling. But it was that second half start that got the Lakers going. He got the Lakers a couple of lobs for McGee (one on a designed play). That helped set the tone for the half as Rondo started attacking the paint, as well. Well-rounded minutes from him. He knocked down both threes he too. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting (2-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a +6.

Rondo -- -- This was all about penetration. With LeBron sitting, Rondo moved into the starting lineup. And just like that there was no penetration, shot creation or playmaking to create easy ones for teammates to start this game. Watching the clock tick slowly, waiting until the bench got subbed in was how I spent the first 8 minutes of the game and the last few minutes of the first half. The starters just had no chemistry and were a -8 in the first half as a unit. In the second half, there was a rather noticeable attempt to get guard penetration, which led to scores for our bigs and the starters to actually build a lead. Once he started attacking the paint, the game was over. The Lakers got lobs, layups and flow into their game. I like that they were forced to figure it out in this one. Sure, it’s against a crappy opponent, but just getting reps and chemistry together can help the big picture of improving those non-LeBron minutes. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-10 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +17.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Kenny’s been a pretty consistent role player this season. He’s good for one or two threes a game. He’s good for one or two breakaway scores. He gave more of that tonight. Good work in the passing lanes. He’s been putting more pressure on the perimeter knowing we got guys behind him in case he comes up empty. He and AC tagging in for our starters is one of my favorite things on this roster. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (1-4 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2steals and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a +24.

Kuzma -- -- He mentioned having to sacrifice his game, and that when guys are out he can be more himself. DFish on that in the postgame: “Regardless of who’s in the game, you need to find ways to be yourself.” Yep. He’s had some good games when we didn’t have our superstars completely available. He got into aggressive mode to start the second quarter, attacking the rim for a number of scores off the dribble including three straight buckets that forced a timeout. A little bit of variance on some of these. A left to right crossover to get past his man on one. He attacked left, spun right on another. Then he worked off the Dwight high screen to get some speed and finished the jumphook on over the D. Things fell apart for the rest of the second quarter after that for him. The Warriors went at him a little defensively and also sent some more help offensively and it got a little ugly. He had 8 points at the half, but also 4 turnovers. Still, they were a +7 when he was out there. By the time he got in for the second half, we were on our way to the blowout and he just picked up the baton and ran with it. He knocked down a three, got in on the highlight And-1 dunk play and chipped away at what was a standard stat line for him last year. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-17 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +23.

Caruso -- -- He went 0-5 in the first half, missing on some drives. But he still ended up with the +8 in his 10 minutes (Rondo -6 in his 14). In the second half, he had a chance to score and went 0-2 from the freethrow line. Just not his night offensively. Still productive with 3 assists, a steal and a block. He’s got Kidd and Rondo to learn from every game. I’m hopeful that translates to more consistent playmaking out of AC. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +12.

Howard -- -- He got Draymond kicked out of this game in the second quarter. Draymond was called for multiple fouls and let the refs have it. Dwight was likely going to abuse him all night anyway. I don’t think Draymond likes getting bullied. Good half by Dwight getting to the line and finishing with 9 and 7 in 10 minutes as we wore down the Warriors front court. He got to kind of coast in the second half as we were in for a deep garbage time run. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-4 shooting (5-7 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +16.

Morris -- -- Nice to get him some bigger minutes to start building that chemistry on both ends. He sank a three off a kickout and another on a jab step on iso in the corner. He also scored on a drive off the catch in the post. That three ball is going to be important for this team as we head into the playoffs. He and Bradley were the only Lakers to knock down more than one three. Defensively, a nice challenge on a three to force a brick, but he also had a dumb foul to close the first quarter, hitting three shooter on a tough chuck with 0.1 left. Still seeing some communication issues on that end of the floor, which will likely be the case for a bit. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting (2-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 foul sin 19 minutes. He was a +23.

Daniels -- -- The Lakers got into some deep garbage time run. He attacked the paint for an And-1, getting hit on the head on the finish. He didn’t finish the FT, though, which was a consistent issue for the Lakers in this one (the team was 18-27 from the line). Daniels also airballed a three on iso. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-3 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal and no fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +1.

Cook -- -- Back against his old team, he got some garbage minutes and was aggressive, getting up 6 shots in 7 minutes. He hit a three, badly bricked one from the corner, and missed another pull-up three in transition. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 7 minutes. He was a +1.

Dudley -- -- Scrappy minutes out there, deflecting a pass, grabbing a couple boards, moving the ball. He missed a step-back jumper badly, but glad to get him some minutes. Definitely harder for him to get minutes with Morris here. He’s been in Morris’s ear trying to get him up to speed on what the team is trying to do. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting, had 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +1.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Late in the second quarter Draymond Green lost his mind on a couple of fouls called against him as he tried to battle Dwight. He picked up a couple of techs and was ejected. Meanwhile Chriss, Bender and Loony all had 3 fouls in the first half. So the Warriors interior D was softening up, which would be great if we could consistently put pressure on the rim without LeBron. So that’s what the Lakers did to start the second half. Lobs, layups and dunks for the bigs. Once the middle was softened, they took care of business.

Key Substitution: The Lakers had Kuzma (+23), Morris (+23) and KCP (+24) leading the team. Just too much talent on our bench compared to that Warriors roster.

Key Stats: The Warriors had 17 assists in the first half, the Lakers just 9 with 12 turnovers. We couldn’t consistently collapse the D to set up inside-out sequences. As a result, we also shot just 3-9 from three in the first half. In the second half, we had 15 assists and 4 turnovers.

Never thought I would ever hear that or see it in writing.

Thanks DB! It is exciting these days to see the bench come in, and with a starting lineup like ours that says something. I like how KCP and Caruso play together, Morris is looking like a very solid addition, D39 continues to be a great part of this team's defensive identity, even Kuz is learning to scrap a bit out there. I think Fisher's comment on Kuz being himself was spot on though.

Good to see a blowout with LBJ resting, and AD kept to 25 minutes. Another W. On to the next one!

Thanks DB. I only got to watch garbage time. Regarding Rondo was this just a blip vs a g league roster or was there actually some promise here, eg maybe moving forward rondos philosophy will be to attack the paint when he has primary ball handling duties?

My pessimistic side says the former

Exploiting Warriors personnel and strategy, but what he did do well was play with pace. The common denominator for all his good games is playing with pace. It’s when he pounds the air out of the ball for 20 seconds that causes problems and leads to the net negative.

Good point. So the million dollar question is what takes him away from playing with pace? Rondo himself or better quality opponents that setup better defensively?

Thanks DB! Being in the Central time zone, I faded off into dreamland during a tight game in the 2nd qtr. Nice to see we got a blowout win without extending AD!

That’s a great question.

Imo it’s a mixed bag.

60% of it is Rondo being engaged. I’m not sure how much of this is just mentally and how much is the guy just can’t bring it consistently at his age.

20% is him reverting to his habit of taking 20 seconds to read and break a defense.

20% is the defensive personnel. However, just look at Boston who is one of the better defensive teams and he did great in that game.

There is at least 2 possessions like that every game for Rondo. Dribble dribble dribble - last night he gave the ball to AD at the top of the key with 4 secs left in single coverage. I was like WTF?!?!?

We need a post game guy to ask Rondo directly what is going through his mind during those possessions. I'm open to the possibility that he's like a qb in the pocket holding the ball too long and the off ball movement is the nfl equivalent of a blown routes by receivers. BUT THAT'S A STRETCH!

But really.... Rondo...WTF dude?

At Rondo's age he can't play that way for the entire regular season.

Which is why "playoff Rondo" and "National TV Rondo" is a thing.
