Tim Duncan makes head coaching debut with Gregg Popovich out for personal reasons

The Spurs announced Gregg Popovich (right) will miss Tuesday's game against the Hornets.

A finalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Tim Duncan makes his head coaching debut Tuesday night in Charlotte in place of Gregg Popovich, who will miss the game to attend to personal business, the San Antonio Spurs announced.

Duncan, 43, retired in 2016 after playing 19 seasons with the Spurs, where he won five NBA championships, two Kia MVP awards and two Finals MVPs before joining the coaching staff in July of 2019.

Duncan should have plenty of help on the bench in assistants Becky Hammon, Will Hardy and Chip Engelland.

Hammon has been on the Spurs’ coaching staff since 2014, and Engelland joined the staff in 2005 while Hardy became an assistant back in July.

San Antonio plays its next game on Friday in Brooklyn.

The Spurs' all-time leader in points (26,496), rebounds (15,091), blocked shots (3,020) and games played (1,392), Duncan ranks as just the third player in league history to capture 1,000 career regular-season victories, with only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Robert Parish winning more games over their careers.

In December of 2016, Duncan became the eighth Spur in franchise history to have his jersey retired, joining George Gervin (44), David Robinson (50), Sean Elliott (32), James Silas (13), Avery Johnson (6), Bruce Bowen (12) and Johnny Moore (00).

Duncan played all 19 seasons of his NBA career for Popovich. Only Kobe Bryant (20) played more seasons with a single franchise, while John Stockton (19) is the only other player to play at least 19 seasons with the same squad.

Duncan retired ranked No. 2 in NBA playoff victories, first in postseason double-doubles and third in rebounds. The 15-year span between Duncan's first (1999) and last NBA titles (2014) rank as the second-longest span in league history behind Abdul-Jabbar (17 years) among players participating in both NBA Finals series, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Duncan and John Salley are the only players in league history to capture an NBA title in three different decades.

Why is Duncan the sub instead of Hammon or whoever their lead assistant is?

I guess TD as a head coach is a better story than first female NBA head coach.

Is it possible that Tim Duncan is some sort of coaching savant? Yes.
Is it possible that he was the most qualified? No.
Is it possible that he was the most experienced? No.

Look, I already knew what the game was: the day that they announced that Duncan had joined the coaching staff, it was a fait accompli that Popovich was keeping the seat warm for him. But every time someone from an underrepresented marginalized group is even considered for one of these opportunities, the conversation immediately becomes, "Don't force diversity down our throats, don't pander to the SJW agenda, give the job to the most qualified!" Then, when the most qualified candidate gets passed over for the new hotness, the conversation immediately shifts to, "Well, maybe he's just a natural! How do we know that he's not the better coach? Why don't you give him a chance?"

It's transparent, and it's tiring.

People have been guessing at this.

This is one theory: Spurs assistant coaches are assigned to scout upcoming opponents on a rotating basis. When he's out, Popps makes the official head coach whatever assistant was scouting the team, but in reality the assistants coach as a committee in the game.

You folks should probably take the chips on your shoulders to The Political Thread. There will be people there who will commiserate with you about the brutal oppression of white women who compete with black men for temporary head coaching duties. Black men get all the breaks. Fight the power!

I don't recall any superstar being as quiet, as un-expressive, and as boring of an interview as Duncan was as a player, so I have a hard time fathoming he could lead a team..

A more likely explanation: Why bother bringing on a female assistant if she was never going to be taken seriously in the first place beyond respectability politics. Sure Duncan could be the better option but why not pick him to begin with and never hire Becky Hammon in the first place.

No, activerb gave the likely explanation.

So now Hammond was never taken seriously? Because Duncan was used as the temporary head coach for one game? This seems like major overreaction.

She's been the lead assistant for years Tim Duncan has done it what a season(probably less than that). I think Pop would've gotten more blowback if it was some random dude instead of a Spurs legend for this. Giving how fake woke the NBA pretends to be.

I think it got relatively little attention because people understand it wasn't a big deal.

Pops seems to have a methodology for who is the official head coach based on who happened to be scouting a team he is out for. The actual coaching duties are divided pretty evenly among the whole staff.

So this isn't any kind of statement about Hammond, Duncan or anyone else. The "official" coach in his absence is more about the luck of the draw than anything else.
