Former Knick Gerald Wilkins arrested multiple times in last two weeks, sent to hospital for mental health evaluation

Sounds like Gerald Wilkins is in a dangerous place right now.

The former Knick was recently arrested twice for assault in Georgia and another time was sent to the hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to police records obtained by the Daily News.

The most alarming alleged incident occurred on June 6 when Wilkins, 56, who is the brother of NBA legend Dominique Wilkins, barricaded himself inside his girlfriend’s bedroom for 2 ½ hours, disabled the fire alarm and began pouring “accelerants and other liquids through the cracks of the door repeatedly (rubbing alcohol, bleach, soap, Epson salt, water and urine),” according to the report from the Cobb County police.

After a crisis therapist signed an order for involuntary committal, the police broke through the door and transported Wilkins to a hospital for evaluation, according to the report.

Then on Tuesday, Wilkins was arrested for allegedly threatening a man with a 12-inch screwdriver, according to a separate report. The alleged victim told police Wilkins had walked into his shop “and started yelling and acting aggressive for no reason.” Wilkins allegedly hit another man in the store with an object, the report said, and left with the screwdriver. He was charged with simple battery, aggravated assault and theft.

On May 31, Wilkins was arrested for simple assault after he allegedly forced his way into a woman’s home and pushed her, according to the police report. The woman claimed Wilkins was upset that she wouldn’t let him use her phone.

Wilkins played 13 seasons in the NBA, including his first seven with the Knicks. He averaged a career-high 19.1 points for New York during the 1986-87 season, and signed with the Cavaliers as a free agent in 1992. His son, Damien, played in the NBA until 2018.

Report: Former Knicks guard Gerald Wilkins arrested, marking latest incident in recent months

Former New York Knicks guard Gerald Wilkins was arrested in Georgia on Tuesday on battery and trespassing charges, according to TMZ.

Wilkins, per the report, was arrested in Cobb County, which is located just north of Atlanta. He is facing two counts of misdemeanor simple battery and a single count of misdemeanor criminal trespass, though the specifics of his arrest aren’t clear.

Wilkins’ recent string of arrests
Tuesday’s arrest marked just the latest troubling incident from Wilkins in recent months.

Wilkins was arrested twice in two weeks earlier this year and hospitalized for a mental health evaluation after a pair of incidents. He was arrested in May after allegedly threatening a man with a 12-inch screwdriver after walking into the man’s store. He allegedly hit another man in the store before leaving, too.

He then reportedly locked himself inside his girlfriend's room for two hours two weeks later, disabled the fire alarm and poured “accelerants and other liquids through cracks on the door repeatedly. Police eventually broke in and transported him to a hospital.

Wilkins played in the league from 1985-1999, most notably with the New York Knicks. He also spent two seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, one with the Vancouver Grizzlies and three with the Orlando Magic before calling it a career.

He averaged 13 points and three assists in 900 total games throughout his time in the league. Wilkins is the brother of Basketball Hall of Famer and longtime Atlanta Hawks star Dominique Wilkins. His son, Damien Wilkins, also played 10 NBA seasons.
