|

I realize that preseason stats don't mean much (players aren't giving full effort, games don't mean anything, coaches are experimenting with lineups, blah, blah, blah). But sometimes trends that start in preseason carry over to the regular season so I thought I would take a look. Below is a link to the preseason stats.
LINK
A couple of things stood out to me.
1. Lakers shot 35.6% from three point range as a team. No bad but not great. Several players were ugly from distance early on (AD, Lebron and Ellington all at 25%, Nunn at 28%) but others looked good (Russ and THT at a respectable 36%, Monk at 47% and Melo at 43%).
2. Free throw shooting continues to be an issue early on with the team only shooting 72%. Lebron, Ellington, Melo and Nunn shot well while Russ (60%), AD (64%) and THT (71%) underperformed. Odd stat Monk did not make a single trip to the free throw line in three games.
3. Howard and Bazemore let the team in personal fouls which is not surprising given their roles at defenders on the team.
4. Was a little surprised that Reeves was third on the team in steals per game just behind Lebron and AD but ahead of Howard, Bazemore and Russ. Did not expect that from a rookie who was in the middle of the pack on minutes per game.
5. Was also surprised Reeves with fourth on the team in assists behind the usual Russ, Lebron and Rondo. I would have thought Nunn or Monk would have averaged more.
Enjoy,

On a separate page at your link, I'm looking at the total averages for opposing teams and the Lakers gave up more points than any squad in the league.
Yes, I know it is pre-season with experimental lineups, Exhibit 10s taking up some minutes and players out injured, but it is this area that will be my main area of focus going forward into the regular season.
Another disappointing stat is rebounds to the opposing team allowed. We're the 7th worst in the pre-season, which is not surprising since we were running lineups with four smalls and one big for the first four games or so. Hopefully we can maintain lineups with size this season (or snag another backup defensive SF/PF with size to help). |
