Quote: | Former NBA All-Star Kermit Washington arrested in Homeland Security investigation
Kermit Washington, a former NBA All-Star with the Trail Blazers most known for punching Rudy Tomjanovich during a Lakers-Rockets game, was arrested Tuesday at a Los Angeles supermarket by special agents, some of whom work for Homeland Security Investgations, according to a TMZ report.
"Special agents with U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) arrested former NBA player Kermit Washington in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning, on a federal arrest warrant as part of an on-going investigation,” HSI spokesman Shawn Neudauer told TMZ.
The arrest, according to TMZ, is in relation to an investigation into Ron Mix, a pro football Hall of Famer who pleaded guilty Monday to tax fraud.
A Kansas City Star report said Mix, a worker’s compensation lawyer, illegally paid roughly $155,000 over a three-year period to a non-lawyer “for referrals on clients,” according to federal prosecutors. The money was donated to a charity operated by the non-lawyer, and Mix claimed charitable donations on his tax returns.
TMZ reported that Mix was making donations to Project Contact Africa and the person making the referrals has been dubbed “Individual F,” who was using donations for “his own personal enjoyment and to fund his lifestyle,” officials told the website.
An Oregonian profile on Washington from 2011 said the Sixth Man Foundation, which Washington created, turned into Project Contact Africa, and that Washington became devoted to helping Africans after an August 1994 trip to Zaire.
TMZ said officials wouldn’t tell the website if Washington is “Individual F.”
Washington infamously punched Tomjanovich during a game on Dec. 9, 1977, fracturing Tomjanovich’s skull and breaking his jaw and nose. |

Only if you think that stories about Norm Nixon, Jamal Wilkes, Jerry West and other former Lakers belong in the general basketball section. |

Kind of weird despite the documentary about what he's done since and the great redemption story he has, they just always wanna bring up him punching Rudy T. |

Isn't that Mychal Thompson's best buddy & former radio partner?
I liked Kermit as a player. He suffered as much as Rudy did from the incident. Kermit was developing into JUST the PF that Kareem needed when The Punch happened. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns". |

Because they need to justify their bureaucratic existence by finding work to busy themselves with. They were busting happy ending massage parlors and a gay escort website recently as well. They're acting like a federal vice unit at this point. More money down the rathole. |

Like it or not, it's the defining moment of Kermit's life. It will be the first line of his obituary and the first thing most people think of if you mention his name. |

Wow, I have a lot of cases with Ron Mix' office. Guess he won't be making many appearances in the near future. |

Just a guess but likely due to their role of following the money of charities in the US.
Some charities with overseas ties have been linked to funneling money to terrorist entities. HSA monitors it and likely stumbled across the mismanagement of the funds in this case. |

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former NBA player Kermit Washington has pleaded not guilty to fraud charges accusing him of embezzling nearly a half million dollars from his Project Contact Africa charity.
The Kansas City Star reports (http://j.mp/1tyUEzc ) that Washington's defense attorney entered not guilty pleas Thursday on Washington's behalf to charges of interfering with internal revenue laws, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, obstruction of justice and aggravated identity theft.
Washington was arrested last month in California after a federal grand jury in Kansas City indicted him.
Washington played for several teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, San Diego Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers. He's remembered for a nearly fatal punch to Rudy Tomjanovich during a 1977 game between the Lakers and Houston Rockets.
