To be fair, the spin-off show is on par with BB. I trust that this is something Gilligan wanted to do and not something he did just because he could and wanted to cash in.

I know a lot of people like Better Call Saul but it's not for me. I think Breaking Bad went on a couple episodes too long and had a pretty bad ending. Might be time to put it to bed.

I love BCS! There are aspects of it that rival, if not surpass, BB. The character aspect to the writing is amazing and the acting is stellar.

I've ha reservations abouyt the BB movie since it was announced way back when, but I don't think they are doing it just wring everything out of it. I get the impression they are doing it with good intentions.

I may have written off Almodovar at too young of an age. Starting to think this dude might be a genius.

Saw "Brittany Runs a Marathon" last night.

Sweet film. Exactly what I had thought it'd be and better.

The trailer reminded me of a Simon Pegg movie where he runs a marathon, which I really enjoyed. Might have to check this one out too.

It's telling that Almodovar's "women's pictures" are more widely praised and better known than his out-and-out queer films.

My issue with this - especially as an unabashed advocate for the final episode - is that Jesse's final scene is perfect. Aaron Paul captures Jesse's trauma, horror, fatigue, and exultant relief flawlessly and Jesse is given the freedom the character needed after his rise and fall into victimhood.

I do trust Gilligan, but this seems like going back to the same well too often.

Scorcese's The Irishman is 210 minutes and I'm going to watch it back to back when it comes out.

I do too, which is why I will give him the benefit of the doubt on this.

I'm encouraged by the trailer. I am very aware that teaser trailers are called that for a reason. But I like that the trailer shows Skinny Pete talking to the cops about how he won't help them find Jesse. To me that indicates the movie could be about the effort to find Jesse as opposed to simply telling Jesse's post BB story.

If that's the case, that's a BB movie I could be down with. One of the best parts of BB was how the whole Hank and LE pursuit of Walt and Jesse was worked in so elegantly. If that's the path they go down, there's great potential for an interesting postscript to the BB story from outside the box.

I could be down with a "Where's Jessie?" procedural/chase. I'm just exhausted by extended universes and wish creators - even ones as talented as Gilligan - could let their darlings die.

Top August 1st watches:

Twin Peaks: The Return
The Skin I Live In
Day Night Day Night
The Duchess of Langeais
The Man from London

Honorable mention: Celine(1992), Your Name, Among Wolves, Knife+Heart, Our Man in Havana, Love and Goodbye and Hawaii, and Dance, Girl, Dance

Top August re-watches:

Harold and Maude
Swing Time
Master and Commander

The Return is a truly great artistic work and I keep seeing gems which reinforce that 2007 should be remembered as an all-time great movie year.

Apropos of stupid online discourse that's popped up over the weekend as The Joker debuted at Venice to mixed criticism (great!), a reminder that behind the critic's impulse to analyze narrative art as a didactic/moralistic/political vehicle is in no small part a desire to scold books, movies, etc. that don't conform to such, especially those that are flagrantly immoral.

Cruelty and immorality are essential parts of the human condition and even if experiencing depictions of cruel/immoral actions and actors in literature and film is often unpleasant, the scolds will see something dangerous (and it may well be, dangerousness can be great!) that's out of lock-step and that should be viewed as an aberration if not something outright harmful to be shunned rather than a piece of art that may be ahead of its time or out of time, or that may have value beyond the scope of some critics' perspectives. "Now is not the time for this," critics will write sanctimoniously, infantilizing the audience in their head.

And I don't even want to see The Joker. And I appreciate good film and literary criticism.

Some reviews of the Joker are in, and some call it an Oscar contender

Regal LA Live played some old Tarantino movies in the premier theater this weekend. I saw Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vol 1, and Kill Bill Vol 2 the past 3 nights and it was great.

I also had no idea they had an old school palace style theater - 800 seats with a balcony and all. Seats are comfy, they don't recline but they lean back a decent amount. I'm thinking of making this my new go-to theater.

I think I'm going to see The Matrix tonight, then Back to The Future next Tuesday at the Arclight. Big month for throwbacks. Arclight Hollywood is showing Indiana Jones, Jaws, Beverly Hills Cop, and 2001 - just to name a few.

I'm most excited for IT: Chapter 2 this week though.

Telluride has some interesting films this year. I'm really looking forward to Parasite by Bong Joon Ho, the new Noah Baumbach film Marriage Story, the new movie by the Safdie Brothers, Uncut Gems, and the new Kelly Reichardt - First Cow. As an aside, if you haven't already done so you all need to see all of her movies. She is one of the best filmmakers out there and the world needs to know this.

Most of Reinhardt's films are streaming on the Criterion Channel while I believe Night Moves and Certain Women are still streaming on Netflix. If you don't have the Criterion Channel, you should, but Meek's Cutoff and Wendy and Lucy are streaming on Hulu. They're also all worth renting on iTunes or Prime. Which is my way of endorsing golden armor's recommendation.

Sciamma's Portrait, which got great buzz at Cannes and now Telluride also looks exciting, though U.S. audiences may not get it until next year.

Random thoughts:

Carlos Reygadas is a real one. Taika Waititi is not a real one. I want to see Carlos Reygadas' Thor.

Ed Harris needs to be in more things.

Timothee(e) Chalamet is apparently Leonardo DiCaprio circa 1997: a sickly looking soft boy tween girls fantasize about cuddling with.

It may be a simple "rom-com", but I thoroughly enjoyed watching "Juliet, Naked", the other night.

That is all.
