30 Wins… Any loss for the Cavs is a win for the Lakers draft pick.

Behind Julius Randle’s 36 points, 14 boards and 7 assists, and three other Lakers scoring 20 or more points, the Lakers steamrolled the Cavs, 127-113.

Something about this game felt like it was in control from start to finish. Randle and Lopez dominated the interior. By halftime, the Lakers had 19 of their 30 assists – the ball moving inside-out and around to open shooters.

They’d break the game open behind Isaiah Thomas and Randle in the second half. With IT dropping in baskets, then setting up Julius for scores, the lead ballooned to 20.

The team has grown month by month. Sure wish it was December right now.

Ball -- -- Yuck. Some awful moments in this one, including hitting the side of the backboard on a wide open three and missing a breakaway dunk. Not a good audition in front of LeBron today. One of his worst games in a while. He’s still dish out 7 assists, but I didn’t think he imposed himself on the game. He kind of floated while others were handling the Cavs. Defensively, he got into a little foul trouble early on, but didn’t pick up another after that. We had a lot of switches, especially on LeBron, where he needed more help from teammates. Burn this one. Hopefully, it’s not burned on LeBron’s memory. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-11 shooting (1-6 from three) to go with 3 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was -1. The Action: He missed a short baseline jumper. He lobbed to Lopez out of a timeout. He picked up his second foul trying to block LeBron on a switch (we should have sent help). He airballed a turnaround up against the shotclock. Wide open and he hit the side of the backboard on a three, yikes (that had the crowd buzzing in a bad way). He sank a wing three on a kickout. He setup Randle for a layup off the screen-roll. He missed a wing three. He hit IT for three. Way short on a three on a kickout. Second Half: He kicked out to Lopez for a three. He cut and Randle found him for the dunk. He missed a corner three. He missed a pull-up from midrange off the screen. He missed a dunk ahead of the break. He missed an open wing three on a kickout. He swiped a pass.

Randle -- -- New career high tonight. Just a dominating performance. He’s not getting away from the Lakers. I mean, right? No way. I’ve got to think they match whatever offer he gets and work with him on the timing of that to use his cap hold to their advantage. Not only scoring 36 points tonight, but add in 14 boards and 7 assists? Ridiculous. He even had a sweet rejection on a dunk attempt. He picked up speed as the game went along. He had 13 points on 4-6 shooting and 5 assists in the first half, flexing that muscle early on in the paint. In the second half, he and Isaiah teamed up to pick them apart. Some great chemistry on the two-man game with those two. And when they weren’t working that, Randle could beast his way to scores on iso. “He was a beast. He was a beast. He did everything we needed him to do,” Isaiah said. Multiple dunks by Randle tonight, one jumper and the rest around the rim. He’s been ill the last couple of games, but had the motor running all game tonight. The Stats: He scored 36 points on 14-18 shooting (8-10 from the line) to go with 14 boards (6 offensive), 7 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: He spun baseline and airballed an attempt, we got it back to him and he hit a long wing jumper with the shotclock low. Nice duck in and he overpowered his man in the post for a layup. He crossed over, attacked baseline and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a leaning jumper trying to draw contact. He overpowered Nance in the post for a layup. He kicked out to Wear for three. Great help D to reject Nance out of bounds and save Lonzo. He was called for a charge instead of taking the FT jumper. He kicked to Lonzo for a three. He scored a layup off the screen-roll with Zo. Great Euro-step at full speed to get into the paint on the break and he kicked to KCP for the three. Blocked once, got it back and was fouled on the second attempt, he made both FTs. He charged in transition attacking when nothing was there. He bullied his way to FTs at the front of the rim, he made both. He traveled in the paint. Second Half: He bounced to a cutting Lonzo for a dunk. He attacked right, spun left and dunked with both hands (so nice). Nice swat on a dunk in transition to get a stop. He sized up his man, faked, attacked right and drew FTs in transition, he made both. He missed a tip-in attempt. He went behind his back on the dribble, bumped his man to the floor and scored the layup. He tipped in a missed Kuzma drive. He cut off IT’s probe, took the pass and slammed. He scored an And-1 layup off the pocket pass from IT, he missed the FT. Another from IT on the two-man game and he scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He trailed the break and IT hit him for the dunk. He grabbed a loose ball and reversed. He attacked and kicked to KCP for three. Isaiah found him with a high pass for another dunk. He attacked from the wing and scored a layup.

Lopez -- -- Strong first half. He had 14 points on 7-12 shooting. He’d get up 18 shots in this one. We’re getting him the ball for more opportunities in the paint and he’s answering the call. Lopez said playing inside-out has been the difference. “It’s just been a learning process,” he said of playing with Julius. Part of having all the roster turnover means we don’t always play to our strengths. Everyone kind of anticipated the Lakers playing stronger as the season went along and they seem to be doing that (even while fighting through injury issues). Lopez and Randle dominated with a combined 58 points, 22 boards, 11 assists and 4 blocks. Nice. He was possessed on the glass tonight, pulling down 8. Looked like an actual rebounder at times. Defensively, we have a lot of switching action. They don’t seem to attack Brook as much as they do the guards on those situations. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 10-18 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 8 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He missed a wing three. He missed in the post with all kinds of contact. He finished an easy lob from Lonzo on the screen-roll. He faced up and banked over Nance from the right side. He reversed on a rim run for the score. He dunked off the pass from IT. He swatted JC. He hit a jumphook with early position. He drew a double team and hit Caruso for a layup. He attacked off the three line, missed, but followed it up and scored the putback. Rim run, he missed the shot but bounced up and scored the putback again. He bricked a bad step-back in the post, seemed like he lost his balance. Second Half: He sank a three on a kickout. He missed a tough fade in the post. He missed a jumphook getting contact with no call. He traveled off the three line. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He blocked a drive. He hit a jumphook over Nance. He missed a wing three on a kickout.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He came out of the gates on fire like he has been. He led the Lakers with 15 points on 6-8 shooting in the first half. He’d chip in 5 more in the second half. Every time he shoots a three right now, I expect it to go in. He was 4-8 from three tonight. Just killing it. The Lakers had four players with 20 or more points tonight. Cavs had just LeBron. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-13 shooting (4-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He curled into the lane, held the ball high over Nance and scored the layup. Great effort on the offensive glass to pull down a miss, take it back out and hit the 15-footer. He drained a wing three off a handoff. He missed sideline three in transition. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He sank a corner three on a kickout. He drained a corner three in transition (great job setting up in corner position on the break weakside on that one). He cut and Kuzma zipped a give-and-go pass to him for a layup. Second Half: He missed a corner three on a kickout. He crossed over and missed a long wing jumper on the same possession. He missed a three on a kickout. He missed a three. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made both. He swiped a pass in a backcourt and it led to a score. Lazy telegraphed one-handed pass and Calderon picked it off. He hit a three off kickout. He traveled off the three line.

Kuzma -- -- Luke called a timeout late in the game to bark at Kuzma on D. He didn’t want the team to let up and he’s staying on Kyle. After the game, though, he had nothing but praise for him. “I’m very impressed and proud of how Kuz has been handling himself,” Luke said. “We’re playing him out of position. He’s taking less shots, playing more minutes and really doing a nice job of just helping us win games and competing with the right type of spirit behind how he’s playing.” He’s been pretty methodical with how he’s been playing. He had one or two shots that were poor shot selection, but the rest were fine. He was hustling on the glass and also had a great challenge on LeBron on iso, but got called for a touch foul. Double-double for the rookie. I need to mention the Laker FT shooting somewhere in this one, so we’ll do it with Kuzma. He made all four attempts from his line and the team as a whole made 18-20. The improved freethrow shooting and three shooting has them putting up huge numbers offensively right now. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-14 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He missed a three on a kickout. Poor shot selection trying to hit a one-footed 16-footer in early offense and he missed. He took a handoff on the baseline from Kuzma and reversed. He was blocked on a drive. He drop-stepped and banked. He missed a wing three. He stepped over the line on an inbounds to give it right back to the Cavs (ended up being a 6-point trip down the court for the Cavs). He swished a sideline three on the other end to get part of it back. Sweet pass to a cutting KCP for the layup. He missed a scoop around a defender. He was fouled on the defensive glass, he made both. Second Half: He choked a layup on the break. Busted play, he gathered the ball and hit the three. He posted up Korver and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked in early offense, missed, but we got it back, he missed another drive but Randle cleaned it up. He missed a short one but Randle cleaned it up. He ran clock, crossed over and missed a three.

Thomas -- -- I’m sure if JC lit us up, there would be Laker fans complaining about IT. Well, it’s Isaiah’s night. He torched the Cavs. In the second half, he broke the game open getting scores in the paint and then setting up Julius again and again for scores. “Amazing, man,” Randle said. “He really opened the game up for us.” During some of that stretch, he’d stare at the Cavs bench (Lue, I think). “Just another game,” Isaiah said afterward. The Cavs D certainly had some soft points (Calderon) and I don’t think Isaiah is there yet to beat decent defenders on iso with regularity. So he mostly worked off the screens tonight and orchestrated superbly out of the pick and roll. Randle was looking dominant tonight and Isaiah helped magnify that with some excellent playmaking. Great game from IT. Yes, he dominated the JC vs. IT debate/battle. JC had 4 points on 1-8 shooting with 4 assists. Isaiah had 20 points and 9 assists (and somehow 5 rebounds). There was a moment in the fourth quarter with the Cavs behind big where LeBron switched onto IT and had a big smile. Sure didn’t seem like any bad blood from LeBron between those two. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-16 shooting (2-7 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 9 assists, 1 steal, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He airballed a three on his first attempt. He wrapped a pass around a defender to Lopez for a dunk. He drew the D and kicked to KCP for three. He was blocked on a drive but stole it back. He missed a long heave at the buzzer. Caught in the air and he threw a pass away. He bricked a leaning three, not a good look. Worked by Calderon for a reverse, yikes. Telegraphed a kickout and LeBron took it for a layup. He swished a corner three on the other end to get it back. He sank a deep three on a return pass from Lonzo. Second Half: He hit Lopez for a three. He missed a wing pull-up jumper, but got it back and attacked later in the possession to score the floater. He drew FTs getting fouled in the backcourt, he made both. He probed the paint, getting his man in jail, then hitting Julius cutting for the slam. He missed a three in transition, hustled to get his own miss, then hit the pull-up at the FT line. He lost the dribble in the back court with a second left. He drew FTs and made both. He probed in transition and hit the teardrop. He curled off the high screen to his left and scored the layup high off the glass. He crossed over his man badly, then hit the pull-up 16-footer and stared at Lue. He hit Randle on the two-man game for an And-1. He hit Randle for another And-1 on the two-man game. He took an outlet and hit Randle trailing the break for the dunk. He missed a corner three. Poor post entry, turnover. He hit Randle in the paint for another dunk. He missed a wing three. He was blocked trying to beat the shotclock.

Wear -- -- Three attempts from three and he made two of them. Good run for him in his three games. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-3 shooting from three to go with 2 boards and 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He missed a flat three on a kickout. He sank a corner three on a kickout, much better arc. Second Half: He sank a wing three on a swing pass.

Caruso -- -- Quietly some nice D while out there. Only credit for a steal, but he forced JC into throwing a pass away and also forced a break on a great challenge on the three line. No minutes for Ennis tonight with Caruso’s call-up. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: Easy layup when his man left him to double and Lopez found him on the dive. Second Half: Great challenge on a three to force a brick. He attacked from the corner off a great passing sequence and reversed. He forced JC into a horrible pass that Zubac stole. He missed a pullup three. He stole an inbounds.

Zubac -- -- A couple steals for Zubac tonight, just being the right place at the right time. Nothing much else to report. They kept his minutes short. The Stats: He didn’t score and had 1 board, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 6 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He had a pass thrown to him for a steal.

Williams -- -- He came in for the final 25 seconds of the first half. The Stats: No stats in 25 seconds. He was a +0. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- Up 2 when IT came in for Ball who picked up his second foul midway through the quarter… Up 4 when Luke called a timeout and brought in Wear for Randle with 3 minutes left. Randle imposing himself from the start in this one… Caruso in for KCP with a minute left… The Lakers led 33-29 after the first quarter… He started a Zubac, Wear, Ball, Caruso, IT lineup… Randle in for Zubac up 3… Up 4 when Kuzma and KCP came in for Wear and Caruso… They pushed the lead to 8 and forced a timeout… Up 8 when IT sat for Lopez… The Lakers led by 2 when IT returned for Lonzo… Lopez out for Williams with 25 seconds left, Lakers up 5… The Lakers led 65-60 at the half… Coaches liked the half court execution, but wanted a faster pace in the second half… They pushed the lead to 11… The offense went dry and the Lakers called a timeout tied 72-72… IT in for Lonzo with 4 minutes left (Lonzo struggling this game), Lakers up 5… A 12-1 Laker run forced a timeout, Lakers up 11… Caruso in for KCP... The run was extended to 22-6… The Lakers led 98-82 heading into the fourth… He started a Zubac, Wear, Lonzo, Caruso, IT lineup… They pushed it to a 19-point lead off IT looking like his old self. That forced a timeout… A quick timeout by Luke after giving up 5 quick points out of that… He went back to the starters with IT instead of Kuzma… Kuzma in for Lonzo up 16 with 7 minutes left… The Cavs called a timeout and brought in their bench with half a quarter left and down 21… The lead was trimmed to 15 when we gave up a corner three to Korver. Luke threw his papers to the floor and called timeout. Then gave Kuzma an earful… They cruised to the win…

Thanks again DB! Great write-up as always! Sure is nice to see more happy faces on these T&R threads this year. 30 wins and 16 more games left to play.

Randle - if we keep him we've got half our 2Max right there.

Another thing I've got to comment on - one thing I see Isaiah Thomas doing all game long is talking. Communicating. On both ends of the floor. What a difference that makes.

What has this world come to when a depleted Laker squad is hosting LeBron's Cavaliers on ESPN, and it's the Cavs getting the criticism for not talking on defense as they get torched by the Lakers!

Thanks DB! We were led by the 4 players (JR, IT, KCP, BLo) that we originally didn't expect to last beyond this season. Will be an interesting off season to see how everything shakes out.

True

However, some new questions now exist

Is Randle a budding superstar that they can continue to build on instead of teaching a new system to FA, along with the others learning how to adjust

Lopez, with the help IT, is now able to be an actual presence in the post. With the market being depressed (relatively speaking), he could be back

KCP is a wild card depending on what salary he is asking for. If the Lakers get PG13 and he is playing SG - easy decision

If IT demands to be a starter and the $$$$$$ he expects, wish him the best of luck. Maybe IT will see how AI and Durant dealt with their participation with the Warriors where ball movement and sharing the ball is best for everyone. With Lonzo able to play multiple positions, IT will play major minutes.

Any win is a good win. Will the Lakers win 40 games this season?

Pairing Randle with a penetrating guard is beastly.

Lonzo sat on JC going right and it worked big time.

Lopez getting in a grove with the team.

We're a boarderline playoff team if the season started today.

Nothing borderline about it. We'd be fighting for fourth seed

There is no such thing as a Cavs fan. They are Lebron fans.
