Dull Defensively… “We weren’t physical enough at that end of the court,” Luke said of the defense after the 110-100 loss to the Pacers.

The Lakers had a 12-point lead in the first quarter, but a series of turnovers by Lonzo in the second quarter helped give up the lead.

By the end of the third, the Lakers were now down by 12, struggling to defend the Pacer guards off the screens. Oladipo and Collison combined for 18 points in the third quarter.

With Turner knocking down shots on the perimeter and rolling for scores, the Lakers had to either lock in defensively or pick their poison and hope they missed. The Pacers took what the defense gave them and picked the Lakers apart.

“It’s tough when they’re all going,” Luke said of the Pacer attack.

Randle -- -- Another 20+ game for Julius. But kind of a ho-hum 21 tonight. It took a lot more shots tonight as he was getting challenged well in the paint. That led to a few of those offensive boards off his own misses, as well. He had 12 points on 6-11 shooting and 5 boards in the first half. He picked up his third foul with a minute left in the first half. That might have slowed him up a little or change some decisions in the third quarter. We weren’t getting enough stops and steals to get out on the break with consistency. He had just 3 defensive boards and 1 steal. That steal resulted in a score. Lakers needed more of that to get the game in their favor, instead we were late to react tonight on help D and pulling the ball out of the net. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 9-19 shooting (3-5 from three) to go with 9 boards (6 offensive), 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He hit a jumphook off the two-man game with Lonzo. He missed a jumphook, not using glass. He took a bounce pass in transition and scored a layup. He backed his man down and hit the And-1 jumphook over the double team, he missed the FT. He lost the dribble in the post, turnover. He slammed over the help D on the screen-roll with Lonzo. He kicked out to KCP for a three. He missed a layup after muscling his man. He missed a jumphook, got it back and was swatted out of bounds. He cut off the Lopez post, took the pass and scored the layup. He bumped a man to the floor and then dunked. Second Half: He backed his man down and missed the short one in the paint (usually he shoots a fade when going that direction). He backed his man down, drop-stepped and banked in the jumphook. He drew the attention of the D and hit Kuzma for the layup. He missed, got it back and was blocked. He muscled his man in the paint and scored the layup. He swiped the ball on the perimeter, pushed it out and drew FTs, he made one. He drew FTs in transition, he made both. He was blocked, got it back and scored the layup. He missed a turnaround off the offensive glass.

Ball -- -- He had the 8 assists, but also 4 turnovers. Three of those came in the second quarter during a stretch that helped the Pacers dig out of the hole they were in. So rather than build on our lead, we lost it by halftime. Pacers then rolled over us in the third quarter. Some disruptive D getting his hands on balls to deflect passes or strip players. That was all on help sequences. His only make from the field was a three. Got a lot of work to put in this summer to work on making his game more well-rounded. That's how it is for 20-year-old rooks. The Stats: He scored The Action: He found Randle off the two-man game for a score. He hit Randle on the break for a layup. He picked a foul trying to dunk a putback over a defender. He got middle and bounced to Randle rolling for the slam. He hit Kuzma in transition for a three. He swiped a pass in the lane. He missed a wing three, got it back and then traveled. Bad pass out of a timeout, turnover. He cut, took a pass and threw it away next time down. He sank a step-back three. He missed a three pushing it up at the end of the half. Second Half: He deflected a pass to get a stop. Nice reach on help D to knock a ball loose. He drew FTs on a backdoor cut, he made one. He missed a long wing three. Great read taking a pass and quickly firing another pass to Kuzma under the hoop for a layup. He hit Kuzma cutting weakside for a layup.

Lopez -- -- “We all needed to pack the paint a little bit, be there to help each other on the pick and rolls,” Brook said of the defense. We just got picked apart by the guards working off the screens as well as Turner spacing the floor or rolling. Offensively, Lopez established the paint early. He had 17 points on 8-12 shooting in the first half. Turner had 15 points in the half as the two went at it to start the game. Brook had just 6 in the second half as we didn’t go back to it as much. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 10-15 shooting (1-3 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 3 assists, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 37 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: Low-post catch and he reversed around his man for the Lakers first score. He overpowered Turner for an easy score at the front of the rim. He missed a wing three (get back in the post, please). He sealed his man next time down, took the post entry and scored the layup. He sank a wing three on a kickout from Kuzma. He scored a layup off the screen-roll with IT. He missed a push shot from the FT line (just shoot it normal). He tipped in a missed jumper in transition. He missed a 2-footer. He hit Randle cutting for a layup. He faced up and banked from the right side. He attacked past his man from the corner and dunked. He blocked a shot on one end and missed a three on the other. Second Half: He posted up and hit the turnaround 10-footer. Quick attack on the catch at the elbow and he drew FTs, he made both. He fumbled away a dribble trying to create. He worked the post and hit the jumphook in the middle of the paint. He choked a layup cutting off Randle’s post. He attacked and drew FTs, he missed both. He reject a guard on a drive on iso D.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He scored most of his points in the first half, knocking down a couple threes and getting fouled on another. Quiet night for him, otherwise. I was hoping he was getting back to the form we’ve seen in the past several weeks. We need everyone playing strong right now to get wins. Defensively, he was subpar like the rest of the team. Drives me nuts when he gives up easy straight-line drives. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 3-10 shooting (3-8 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a three in transition. He sank a three straight away on a kickout. He tripped at a pass came and fumble it away. He swished a wing three after getting the ball back on an inbounds. He missed a three in transition. His kickout was picked off. Matador defense to give up a layup. He missed a three off the curl. He was fouled on a three in transition, he made all three. Second Half: He missed an elbow jumper. He was picked on the perimeter. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He was stripped on a drive. He sank a three off a long outlet. He missed an open corner three. He stripped his man in the post.

Kuzma -- -- Aggressive game from start to finish. He had 13 points on 5-7 shooting and 6 boards in the first half. Very efficient. In the second half, he made just 1 of 6 from three. He was still to make things happen with some cuts off ball for scores and lead the team with the 27 points. Glad to see the scoring coming back to him lately, especially with the bigger minutes at the SF spot. He had a really nice cross over to get into an And-1 hook at high speed. Not too many guys in the league can execute on that combination of skills. Very tough to cover and challenge. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 10-18 shooting (3- The Action: He grabbed a rebound and swished a turnaround. He sank a quick-fire wing three off the handoff. He missed a wing three. He sank a wing three in transition. He missed a wing three in transition. He lost his man on a cross over in transition and hit the And-1 hook over the help D, he made the FT. He took a handoff and hit the jumper from the top of the key. Second Half: His kickout was picked off. He missed a corner three but Randle gave it back to him on a drive and dish for the reverse. He sank a wing jumper, getting under cut with no call. He attacked his man in early offense and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a three at the buzzer. He sank a wing three. He missed a corner three in transition and was knocked down with no call. He missed a putback jam. Lonzo spotted him free under the hoop for a layup. He missed a wing three. We got it back to him and he drew FTs on a drive, he made one. He rejected a screen off ball, cut and Lonzo hit him for the layup. He pushed it up, spun and airballed a three on the last possession.

Thomas -- -- He shot blanks from three…that was painful. He would score his 11 points on 14 attempts. He had some floaters in the paint drop, which is nice to see for a change. The missing three ball just made for some really ineffective minutes from him. We want to see him stringing together good games, not bad ones. Show progress on returning to form. I wonder what kind of paycheck he might be expecting this summer. He certainly hasn’t shown enough to get anywhere near what I might have pre-injury. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-14 shooting (0-5 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He set up Lopez for a layup off the two-man game. He sank a pull-up 15-footer over a big. He drew FTs on a pull-up on the FT line, he made one. He probed and was stripped. He missed a three on a kickout. He missed a three. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. Second Half: He telegraphed a pass, points the other way. He attacked off the three line and hit the floater. He hit a floater in transition. He missed another three. He blew a layup in transition and wanted the foul. He sliced through the D off the screens and scored a layup. He drew FTs on an iso drive, he made both. Long outlet to KCP for a three. He missed another three, pulling up off the screen. He missed a tough baseline pull-up. He attacked in transition and was stripped. He picked up a tech.

Zubac -- -- With Lopez killing it, you wanted to see him in the game as much as possible. Zubac’s minutes were short. He scored on a putback. Defensively, better effort on that end. The Stats: The Action: He tipped in a missed jumper in transition. Way short on a jumphook. He faked a handoff, attacked and charged (looked like the man was in the restricted area). Second Half: Good challenge on a dunk to force a miss.

Wear -- -- Quiet game, unable to hit shots. Our bench was outscored 30-13. With the depleted roster we’re going to IT and our deep bench. Without IT shooting or playmaking well, the entire bench suffered. Probably need to find Wear more than two looks in 13 minutes. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 from three to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He got tapped on a wing three. He missed a step-back three. Second Half: He was stripped on the perimeter.

Ennis -- -- Very little notes. He didn’t score, had just a single attempt from three in the second half. Lakers need their bodies back. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 3 boards and 2 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He missed a three straight away.

Walton -- -- Turner vs. Lopez early on. The Lakers took an 18-13 lead and forced a timeout… Lakers up 5 when Lopez sat for IT… Kuzma out for Wear, Lakers up 7… The Lakers led 37-29 after the first quarter… He started a Zubac, Wear, Kuzma, Ennis, Thomas lineup… Up 8 when Lonzo and Randle came in for Ennis and Zubac… Timeout a few seconds later up 4… Starters with IT instead of Kuzma out of that… Up 3, Kuzma back in for IT… A series of Lonzo turnovers and we lost the lead… IT in for Randle with a minute left, down 2, when Randle picked up his third foul… The Lakers led 59-57 at the half. Lakers had 8 turnovers, Pacers just 2… Down 4 when IT came in for KCP midway through the quarter… Lakers struggling to defend the Pacer guards and they fell behind by 7… Another timeout down 11 with 3 minutes left… Wear in for Lopez out of that… Zubac in for Randle down 9… The Lakers trailed 92-80 heading into the fourth… He started the Zzubac, Wear, KCP, Ennis, IT lineup… They slipped back but then cut a 16-point lead down to 9 and forced a timeout… Lopez back in out of that for Wear… Kuzma in for Randle as Luke discussed the D with Julius. Lonzo in for Ennis… Down 14 again, all starters back in with 5 minutes to go… Pacers cruised to the win…

Thanks DB. Disappointing effort; no excuses for Thursday’s game given the circumstances. Have to win...

Displeased wth the defensive effort tonight. JR in particular seemed subpar to me.

And once our offense lost the fast pace it set in the 1st quarter, we lost our rhythm and Indy took advantage.

Thanks DB. Disappointing loss, but this is not one I expected the Lakers to win. Here's hoping we get some better results once our lineup doesn't have a big hole in it at the 3 spot.

Tough game thought Kuz was a positive as he is string a few good games together with BI out. Maybe SF is a better position for him.

As Hart stated during the post game show, starters’ PTs have definitely gone up. The assessment that they need bodies back to lessen their PT and getting back a legitimate bench is accurate

Just watch how the Warriors did without four of their starters

Thanks DB for your work!!!

Thanks DB. Sadly I was there in person for this one. My one shot per year I get to see the P & G live. Seems like no matter what iteration of the team the Lakers always suck in Indy. Still, a lot of Lakers swag in the crowd.

I think he can play both. He needs to get a little stronger for PF and work on technique on D at SF. He has advantages offensively on both positions, so I think he'll continue improve on that end, for sure, as the team integrates him more.
