Anyone else get Odom vibes from this kid?

Odom had more shake and explosion. I lean more toward the Diaw comparisons.

Same. Diaw never really showed his elite athleticism from his Pre-Draft workouts at the NBA level, oddly enough. Must have been the coffee.

Shaun Livingston had more twitch and better breakdown ability with his handle, but any combination of Livingston/Diaw/Anderson is right in line.

He's so raw with so many skills, but the recognition time from sight to action is pretty unreal.

This!!! Flashed in his Jr National play.

I will give you this saw this in Melton also.

Yep. Bonga has shown it since he was in Germany with his PnR reads, but it was more difficult to observe given their very very limited playbook and his limited shot variance in an offense.

Melton OTOH, was multi-dimensional because it was the same kind of perimeter/interior defense all over the floor. Everything was reactive, hence, he was higher on my list.

He's a bigger Charlie Scott/Walter Davis, for the old guys here.

Weren't they shooters?

Walter Davis, yes. Charlie Scott, the crossover king.

Lanky guys who could handle, run, pass, go to the hole, etc. Davis had a sweet, smooth shot, but (when younger) had the full package and when guys closed out, used it to pump fake and blow by for the layup or dish.

(NSF Musberger haters)

Yes there is some cross over skill between them but Scorer vs Facilitator is a big difference I feel.

Should we just go ahead an erect a statue of BonGoat now?

I for one am disappointed in the relatively grounded comparisons we've been getting for Bonga. Where are the "Kobe/Magic hybrid" invocations of yore?

There are too many people eating crow from their comments that Bonga was a bust (starting around page 10 of this thread) to engage in hyperbole. Bonga could still be a bust; it was just too early to call it.

tbh, the criticism was justified, don't you think? Dude may have landed from Germany to Las Vegas, but roughly 5 travels in what, 30 minutes of play?

Like I say with every draft, you can never measure the rate of improvement of a player. If you could, you could rank that from #1 to #60 and have successful drafts every year.

Correct. Preseason Bonga is a totally different player than Summer League Bonga. We saw flashes in SL but the cringe worthy moments would make anyone question draft pick.

The best thing I could say about his SL play was that he made EVERY single PnR read/open/pass that's possible. Multiple PnR situations, defenses helped from different areas of the floor, and he always found the open man. Sometimes those passes were a bit off and had teammates reaching a bit (did this last game during GSW on a 3rd option corner-wing pass too, same habit from Germany), but I'm pretty sure he goes out that far on a pass to prevent the turnover from the opposition. Otherwise, it's a flat angle pass.

He looked decent in preseason for an 18 year old. Much less goofy and awkward than in SL. I really like his defensive potential. I do see a mix of Diaw and Post Knee Livingston.

It would be kind of neat if Bonga could get into a game before he turns 19. LA has something like 8 games before that happens. List of players who have that distinction in he last 30 years.

Max/All-Star/Superstar Types
Bynum
O'Neal
Bryant
McGrady
LeBron
Giannis
Dwight
Booker

Had decent NBA careers
CJ Miles
Amir Johnson
Josh Smith
Martell Webster
Al Harrington

Short lived / Underachievers
Eddy Curry
Darko
Korolev
Biedrins
Bender
Swift
Maciej Lampe

Still to be determined
Dragan Bender
Ike Anigbogu

Just kind of a fun thing.

Nah, not televised today. It'll be televised in the next South Bay game which is next Saturday on Spectrum.

Nice! The kid was tripping over his own feet a few months ago and now look at him.

And still 18 years old for another couple weeks.

Thanks! Looks like I will be tuning in next Saturday.

Maybe Bonga is the secret weapon off the bench for the 2019 playoffs

Sounds like Isaac is playing point-PF for South Bay. Depending on how his body fills out, I think that could be the best spot for him eventually in the big league.

Interesting that he’s being used as a PF. Caruso is also in the lineup so it makes sense.

Although I would be more interested to see him play PG full time.

With all those blocks and steals I'm thinking of a ground bound Andrei Kirilenko.
