I do not want to re litigate the trade, but your statement is clearly true in a vacuum...the issue is when the team took most of their assets off the table to use in building around him or any player his level. Nobody is going to argue that signing in FA Davis and building around him is a great plan, but that assumes you have the tools at your disposal to build around him.
What is done is done....but it is imperative the Lakers are extremely careful how they move forward. There needs to be some risk with young undervalued talent...there needs to be youth in general....there needs to be a real vision. If we go the route of overpaying 30+ year old declining role players, we will end up in a similar position as New Orleans did with AD.
On the Windhorst podcast, Ramona said when asked about everything given up in the AD trade, a Lakers FO employee responded "we could be killed by an asteroid tomorrow"! That is very scary that person may have input to this teams vision and strategy. |

no, but I have already predicted before this event that Clarkson will either be bought out this year and sign with the Lakers at the deadline or will sign with us on the BAE next season. |

As a hefty expiring contract, I guess he could be a buyout candidate during the season. |

I do agree with your signature.....absent Kawhi, we are "contenders" at best next year. Kawhi is what makes us the undisputed favorites. |

they pretty much have to....but I am glad we are not in that position....I think odds are 60% at best that contract does not become a problem because of injury. |

I don't think you're getting anyone better than him for $4.75M, but we can pay him more than that if we sign him last, and it still gives us $19-29M to work with beyond him. If you could split that $29 between DAR and someone like Marcus Morris, that's a huge off-season. |
I love Marcus (he would be a PERFECT FIT) and tried to fit him in, but it will be almost impossible. DLO and Morris for a combined 32. How would it get sliced? Dlo 22/Marcus10? |
I can see Marcus, DLO and KCP on this team, all Klutch sports. I think Rich Paul is going to buy the Lakers eventually. |
I don't think we can keep KCP, honestly. His cap hold is $15.6M, he's almost certain to be renounced |
The one thing we got going with KCP is that we will have his bird rights if he plays 1 more year with us.
Given the scenario that we renounce his hold and use up our cap and exceptions with other players, it is plausible that we can still go back to him and offer him the vet min with the Klutch guarantee of a significant pay raise next year. Of course, this is technically illegal, but I wouldn't put this past Rob and Klutch |
I have to admit I'm not a cap expert. How does it work with our own FAs like KCP, Bullock and Muscala? If we renounce them to create room, can we then still sign them? I thought if you renounced their rights, essentially, you could no longer sign them. Can we renounce KCP and then give him the room MLE?
Also, if you give a player a contract below their cap hold, does that free up cap space? Example, KCP's cap hold is $15.6. If you gave him $1.5M, does that free up the remainder of his hold? |
Yes you can re sign them after renouncing them. Renouncing them opens cap space for us to sign say a max free agent. We then use exceptions or remaining cap space to re sign them just like any other free agent. The bonus is that if they play another season for us, we can get rights- bird rights for KCP, early bird for Muscala and Bullock. _________________ “God knew they couldn’t be on this Earth without each other. UPDATE: The Lakers are front runners to sign D’Angelo Russell as the Nets plan on waving D’lo soon as possible to pursuit Kyrie and KD. The Lakers also plan on offering D’lo around 20M. |

we talk about buy out candidates all the time....if my dude, wants out of Cleveland, there is a chance he could have it where the Cavs release him later in the season if they can't trade him. I would not say it is likely, but they have 3-4 overpriced expiring guards....but will be playing Sexton and Garland.
btw, just looked at Spotrac and they have Clarkson list as Clevland only having Early Bird rights....that can't be true. |
