Quote: | Report: NBA to play preseason games in Japan, India next season
A lot of NBA owners like the idea of sending their team to China for one of the NBA’s preseason exhibition games — it’s a massive market and if a team can make inroads there it helps with jersey sales and more. That is, the owners like it until they do it once. Teams come back from that trip with a jet lag hangover that can last into the season — no team will complain about it publicly, that’s bad PR, but just ask the Warriors players privately how happy they were not to go this season.
Next season, it won’t just be China, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN.

Sources: The NBA will expand its international reach next year to include preseason games in Japan (two cities) and a Dubai/India trip in addition to the China trip. Vivek Ranadive's Kings will likely be one of the teams that go to Dubai and India.

The India trip has been rumored for a while, and the Kings — owned by Indian-American businessman Vivek Ranadive — are an obvious choice.
Going to Japan makes business sense as well — the NBA is a global brand. Basketball is arguably the world’s second most popular sport (or at least in the top few, depending on what factors you use to determine popularity) and the NBA is the highest level of play in the sport. The NBA has worked hard to position itself as the premier league on the planet — and the owners like raking in that global money.
The cost is games around the globe sometimes. Like Japan and India next preseason, two big markets the NBA is working hard to tap. |

$$$
Expand your market, #2 sport globally, catching up to soccer
More revenue = more income for everybody
This is smart (I don’t see NFL, MLB or NHL this aggressive) |

NFL has had games in Mexico, England and are trying for a game in China.
MLB has had games in Australia, Mexico, Cuba, Japan, Puerto Rico so that isn't true.
NHL is been to a lot more countries than you give credit for. China, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Latvia, Czech Republic, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, Austria, Russia, France, England, etc |

NHL was JUST here in Sweden, playing home openers, not preseason games. They also played in Stockholm 2008, I was at that game. They played games in Japan back in 2001. So, if anything, it’s the NBA who are slow af. |

You guys are right. It’s just the NBA has had the most global expansion success compare to all the other US major sports leagues, it becomes the most visible. The NBA remarkably push basketball into the #2 global sport, I thought baseball would’ve blown up first since it has captured Latin America and east Asia for decades but almost no progress if compared to the NBA |

Realistically, sending a professional team overseas is a logistical nightmare. Thats why it will never be done on a regular basis. You aren't going to see teams play more than one game overseas per season with the exception of maybe baseball. The players hate it because jetlag affects their performance. If anything these leagues send them over to promote the sport in the hopes that the audience overseas will tune in and watch on TV and buy their merchandise. |

The NBA has been doing a ton of stuff in China for many years. They've had NBA China for a decade, and it generates $150 million in revenues a year. They have lots of deals to carry the NBA on different platforms; they run basketball academies over there, and do many other programs. |

$150 million per year pales in comparison to the $2.6 billion the NBA earns per year in TV rights in the US. The China market is vastly different from the US. In China, the NBA's paid TV deals are mainly distributed thru their digital platforms and consumed on their phones, computers, etc. This makes sense since they don't have the cable TV infrastructure build out like we do here in the US. Its more likely they will view their NBA games on a 5g mobile device in the future. |

India will be complicated. The country is way too poor for professional sports, even cricket has a hard time.
Want to make basketball powerful there? Work the same way with Pakistan. A Pakistan x India game will beat any China audiences. _________________ -----------------------------------------------------

Admittedly I don't know anything about building a sport in another country but I figure building courts and distributing basketballs would be a good approach. If you can get the kids to buy in then you'll have long lasting support. Don't expect a bunch of athletes to come from either of these places though _________________ "It was tough," Kobe Bryant said. "But when it got really tough for me, I just checked myself in." |
