Team Effort… The Lakers started off slow, trailing 17-6 after just 4 minutes. As we know from the previous game, fast starts mean little.

After a timeout, Lonzo Ball’s activity picked up on the defensive end. Steals turned into transition scores and the game changed from there.

“He’s the key to our defense. When he picks up like that we’re a different team,” said Tyson Chandler, who finished with 13 and 12 himself.

The Lakers finally started to warm up and they locked in as the game went along. Good D turned in transition opportunities (the Lakers had a 31-13 fastbreak advantage on the night).

“Team defense from the second quarter on was really what we’ve been looking for and good to see again,” Luke said. After that slow first quarter, the Lakers won the next three quarters by a combined 23 points.

It turned into a well-rounded effort from the Lakers. There were stretches in this game where LeBron, Lonzo, Kuzma, Ingram, KCP and Chandler all imposed themselves on the opponent on their way to the 114-103 win over the Mavs.

LeBron -- -- “I wasn’t as engaged as a I should have been,” LeBron said, taking the blame for the Lakers bad start. Awful first quarter from LeBron with 4 turnovers, 1-6 shooting and a couple of fouls. After getting blocked a couple times from behind on one sequence by Doncic, LeBron later ran over him. “I made sure I charged into him on that one. I did that on purpose,” LeBron said. Guess he wanted to welcome him to the NBA, and I imagine guys need to do that only once in their career before they start making those business decisions and get out of the way later. LeBron turned things around from there. “You take responsibility, then you reload,” he said of the bad first quarter. He then went 5-5 in the second quarter for 10 points and began imposing himself on the opponent from there. He’d go 11-15 for the rest of the game and by the end of the night it was another 28 points. When the Lakers are playing D and getting stops, that attack from LeBron on the offensive end is tough to deal with. He’s just relentlessly coming after you. The Stats: He scored 28 points on 12-21 shooting (2-4 form three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He scored a layup over his head off the opening tip. He was stripped in the post. He attacked, spun, a little OC and he missed the layup. He hit McGee rolling for a dunk. Off the mark on a lob to McGee, turnover. He missed an open three straight away. He was blocked on back-to-back layups. He stepped out of bounds on the next possession. Weak cross-court pass, turnover. He was called for a charge in transition. He found McGee coming off the Lonzo screen for a layup. He attacked off the high screen and scored a layup. He dunked off the Lonzo steal. He dunked off the Kuzma pass and screen. He changed directions going behind his back and found an open lane for a layup. He faked a handoff to BI, kept it and took it for the dunk. He curled into the lane off the dribble and was fouled on the layup attempt, he missed both FTs. He threaded a bounce pass between defenders to Chandler for a layup. Second Half: He missed an elbow jumper. He filled the lane on the break and dunked. He drained a three in early offense. He then drew a hooking foul on D to get a stop. He missed a wing three. He hit Kuzma for a wing three. He came in for the last possession of the quarter and was stripped on the attack (he wanted the foul). Shotclock low, he attacked and scored the layup over a couple defenders. He attacked off the high screen, spun around the D and scored a layup. He put his man in jail, kept him there and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He airballed a fade on iso, shotclock violation. He blocked a drive. He iso’d, lost his man from the wing and scored a layup. He ran some clock and sank a deep three.

Ball -- -- “We picked it up on defense, got a lot more physical, took them off their spots and got back in the game,” Lonzo said. He helped spark the team to life on the defensive end tonight with back-to-back steals in the first quarter. He had 8 points on 3-7 shooting, 3 assists and 4 steals in the first half. The coaches mentioned that changed the game for them in the half. Asked about drafting Lonzo, Luke said they were shocked how good he was defensively after the team drafted him. “He was way more advanced than we thought he was on that side of the floor,” Luke said. He finished with 5 steals on the night. Unfortunately, he was in foul trouble and eventually fouled out (a lot of whistles in this one. McGee fouled out. The Mavs picked up techs.) Offensively, he had some ugly turnovers to give some of that back, but he teamed for some of the Showtime-esque fast break sequences that you’ll see in the highlights. That’s him at his best. At his worst, it’s not so much when he’s clanking jumpers or missing floaters with bad technique. It’s just disappearing, playing timid and not taking open looks. We saw a little of that tonight, too, but not a disappearing act like other nights. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-9 shooting (1-5 form three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 5 steals, 5 turnovers and 6 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: His lob was deflected, turnover. Short on a wing three out of a timeout. He stripped Jordan, pushed it out through traffic and scored a layup. He swiped the ball from Jordan again next time down and was fouled on the break, he made one FT. He missed a floater short, got it back, he then kept the next Laker miss alive. He missed a corner three. He swiped the ball in the backcourt and then lobbed to Chandler for a dunk. He didn’t take the open three and threw the ball away instead. He threw an outlet out of bounds on his next touch. He swished a corner three when the D sagged off. Quick attack in semi transition and he blew past a man for a layup. He missed a wing three. He swiped a pass and hit LeBron down court for the dunk. He took an outlet and one-handed it to McGee on the touch while in the air for a breakaway dunk. Hockey assist on the pushout to Kuzma who quickly fired to BI for a dunk. Second Half: He missed a corner three. He pounced a passing lane on help D to knock a ball loose, then took the outlet for a dunk. Too early on a lob and it was picked off. A couple good challenges on Barnes on iso D. He was called for using his off arm, fifth foul with 10:33 and he had to sit.

Ingram -- -- Luke credited Brandon’s length for keeping Doncic uncomfortable on the floor (give Kuz much credit, too). “We just tried to contest everything he took,” Ingram said. Doncic went 2-13 for 6 points. BI had a strong first half with 13 points on 5-9 shooting. Love seeing him out on the break with speed or finding teammates doing the same. Big minutes for him tonight as Lonzo’s and LeBron’s foul trouble meant more BI with the ball in his hands at point. This is the kind of game I think that should be very easy for Ingram to duplicate as he gets more experience. Get to the line off drives to manufacture points, hit your open looks while getting to your spots with more consistency and get out in transition and finish. Meanwhile, be a menace on D challenging shots and getting into the passing lanes. When he’s 26 or 27, feels like he should do this just about any night. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 7-16 shooting (0-1 from three, 5-8 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: Crappy pass to LeBron off the opening tip but LeBron put it in over his head. He attacked off the advance pass, spun and drew FTs, he made both. He airballed a corner three. Up against the shotclock, he went to work and hit the turnaround from the wing. He attacked at the elbow and was fouled on the throwdown attempt, he made one. He missed a layup but Chandler dunked it. He attacked and scored a layup. He hit a 16-footer. He attacked at the end of the quarter and missed the short bank. He missed a baseline pull-up. He grabbed a tap out, attacked, weaved through the D and scored the layup. He changed ends quickly and Kuzma hit him for the dunk. He stepped on the sideline, turnover. Second Half: He up-faked and attacked for FTs, he made one. He picked up his dribble and traveled. Outlet to Lonzo for the dunk. He choked a layup on the break, argh. He attacked and missed a layup. He attacked across the lane, pumped and hit the fade. All day off the Chandler screen and he swished the open 16-footer. He forced a turnover with some pressure D on the perimeter. Rushed on a pull-up at the FT line and he missed. He missed an open elbow jumper with plenty of time. He got a stop fighting over a screen. He swiped a kickout and pushed it up court to setup KCP for FTs. He was pushed from behind by Jordan on the defensive glass for FTs, he made one. He ran clock and missed a fade.

Kuzma -- -- “It was long overdue,” Kuzma said. He came to a life a bit in the second quarter. Not with scoring but by making some excellent passes, screens and defensive plays. Just very active at the little things to make an impact with 3 assists and 5 boards with only 1 point. In the third, however, he caught fire, scoring 13 points and draining several threes, while continuing to look for teammates and battle on D. This was really a strong all-round game on both ends of the court. He had excellent D on Doncic and others he covered. Really improving on that end, but he also hit the boards and moved the ball at another level. He finished with the 15-12-6 line. Love that When he’s bringing the complete game? Look out. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-12 shooting (3-7 from three, 4-7 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 6 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 37 minutes. He was +13. The Action: He missed a pull-up at the FT line. Way short on a wide open wing three. He missed an open wing three. Great pass off and quick screen for LeBron who took it for a dunk. Long feed down court next possession and he hit Stephenson for the layup. Great look up court and he found Lance over the top of the D for a layup. He missed a short one off the glass. He took the cross court feed from Lonzo in transition and went cross to court BI for the dunk. Nice D and he challenged his man well on iso to force a miss. Quick attack not waiting for the final shot of the half and he drew FTs (court was pretty spread open), he made one. Second Half: He hit LeBron filling the lane for a dunk. Good challenge on D. He missed a long floater, not a good look. He missed a tech FT, uggh. He attacked and hit the short runner at the front of the rim. He sank a wing three in transition. He attacked and threw it out of bounds. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made both (yay!). He drained a three off the pick and pop on the double high screen. He hit Chandler rolling for the layup. Heat check three off the handoff from Ingram several feet behind the line. He missed a heat check shortly later from three. Extra pass to KCP in the corner for a three. He was pushed on a drive with no call and missed. He was fouled posting up for FTs, he made one. He missed an open three.

McGee -- -- He picked up two quick fouls to start the fourth and was done for the night with more than 11 minutes left. Just 1 block from McGee tonight as the whistle probably erased at least another block. Glad we have Chandler. McGee was in on one of the highlight reel plays tonight as Lonzo one-handed a pass to him on the catch while still in the air and McGee took it for the dunk. “Those are things you can’t teach,” LeBron said of Lonzo. But also credit McGee with just how fast he changes ends to make that possible. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting to go with 7 boards, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 6 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He dunked on a roll to the hoop. He missed a jumphook trying to create on iso. Layup off the screen from Lonzo out of a timeout. Good job changing ends and Lonzo fed him on the fly with a one-handed touch pass for the dunk. Second Half: He deflected a pass. He airballed a floater on iso. He was called for a moving screen trying to roll to the hoop for a lob. He rejected a drive.

Hart -- -- Again, the team was clicking when he was out there. Not a big night, but still a little bit of everything from him. He knocked down a three, attacked the paint for a layup, blocked a drive. His one made three was a nice job getting balanced, squaring up and knocking it down as the defender went under the screen. A couple of his other attempts weren’t on balance. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He tapped out a defensive board to ignite a break. Second Half: He muscled his way to the front of the rim to start the fourth and scored the layup. He missed a three from the wing. His man went under the screen, he gathered and drained the three. Rushed three next time down and he missed. He blocked Barnes in drop coverage defending the paint and ignited a break. He airballed a sideline three.

Chandler -- -- Luke said bringing in Chandler has really helped them with their goal of being a top 10 defensive team. His communication, leadership and that vet knowledge makes a big difference. Teams that don’t have a perimeter shooting big are in for tough nights with our bigmen as they plug the paint effectively. We saw a little vintage Chandler two-way impact game tonight. He credited Lonzo for sparking the team. While that may be true, Chandler was the steadying force anchoring the D. But getting production from him on the offensive end made for the more complete night. The team was hitting him rolling off screens or slip screens for scores. He had putbacks, lobs and offensive tap-outs. The big double-double tonight. It was huge, too, because McGee fouled out less than a minute into the fourth. He’s fitting in well here. Asked about playing his former team (not Dallas, but Phoenix coming up), he said, “That’s in the past. I’m looking forward to the future.” The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-6 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 12 boards (5 offensive), 1 steal and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He threw down a lob dunk. He cleaned up an Ingram miss with a putback. He dunked when Beasley attacked and found him. He scored a layup off the slip screen with LeBron. Second Half: He knocked down an interior feed to get a stop. He rolled to the hoop and Kuzma found him for the layup (should have been an And-1). He battled on the offensive glass and scored the And-1 putback (plus a tech on Barea), he made the FT. Nice screen to free up Ingram for a wide open 16-footer. He tapped out an offensive board and it led to a Laker three.

Stephenson -- -- I don’t think Luke was too thrilled with the defense. His hook has come a lot quicker lately. He played just one half tonight. Funniest play was probably him clapping for the ball from LeBron, then not hitting rim on the subsequent three attempt. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and 1 turnover in 6 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He gave up a couple layups. He didn’t hit rim on a three. He missed a wing pull-up. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He missed a FT tonight to break his streak at 26 in a row. Missed multiple FTs actually tonight, going 8-10 from the line. But those 10 attempts were actually key to getting separation from the Mavs in the fourth. We got into the bonus early, they got frustrated and picked up techs and KCP was living at the line. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 2-7 shooting (1-6 from three, 8-10 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed an open wing three on the catch-and-shoot off a screen. He was fouled as Lonzo sank a three, he made the FT. He chased down an outlet and scored a layup. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He missed a wide open corner three. He missed an open three. He made a tech FT. He missed a wing three. He drew FTs on the break off an Ingram steal, he made both. Fouled while looking to screen and he drew FTs, he made one. He drew more FTs in transition off a Hart block on D, first he missed a tech, then made two in a row, then made another tech as Barea was ejected from the bench.

Beasley -- -- Some first half action where he picked up his lone highlight, a nice drive and dish to Chandler (after a couple of turnovers). Brief stint in the second half. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 board, 1 assist and 2 turnovers in 5 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He lost the dribble in the post, turnover. He blew a two-on-one lob pass, turnover. He attacked in transition when a Mav fell in the backcourt and hit Chandler for a dunk with the extra-man advantage. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Mykhailiuk -- -- In when Lonzo fouled out with a couple minutes left. He sank a corner three on his only attempt. He had a big game in the G-League draining three after three. Hopefully, that has the confidence up and we see more Svi for Three. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 from three to go with 1 foul in 2 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He sank a corner three on a swing pass.

Wagner -- -- He came in with a minute left, Lakers up big. Missed his only attempt. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 assist in 1 minute. He was a -2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He got tapped on a wing three on a pick and pop, looked good.

Walton -- -- Dallas has been rolling lately, making this a quality win… The Lakers fell back 17-6 after just 4 minutes and Luke called a timeout. Pretty much everything wrong with this unit to start, missing wide open threes, turnovers and miscommunication or soft D… Midway through the quarter, down 10, he brought in Chandler for McGee… Hart in for Ball. Lakers down 10… KCP in for Kuzma Lakers down 12… LeBron out with 4 turnovers, 1-6 shooting and 2 fouls. Beasley in down 12… So no point guard in now… The Lakers trailed 32-22 after the first quarter… To start the second quarter, he went with McGee, Beasley, Hart, KCP and Ball… Beasley out for Stephenson down 11… Timeout down 15 with 8:39 left. Laker D just not locked in… The starters with Lance in there instead of Ingram now in. Quick timeout Mavs after three Laker scores at the rim to cut the lead to 11… They trimmed the lead to 5 and forced another timeout… Down 7, Ingram in for Lance… Chandler in for McGee with 3:12 left down 5… He subbed out a couple of starters to protect from third fouls late in the half… The Lakers trailed 58-53 at the half… The Mavs shot 6-27 from three, the Lakers were 1-11. Lakers had 11 turnovers to the Mavs 6 and made just 6-11 from the line… They took a 1-point lead and forced a timeout… Lonzo picked up his fourth foul and had to sit with 4:51 left, Lakers down 2. KCP in… LeBron out with 3:52 left after picking up a foul. Beasley in… Down 1, Lakers starting to get frustrated with the refs… Kuzma heating up and the Lakers took a 5-point lead… The Lakers led 78-75 heading into the fourth… McGee, LeBron, Hart, KCP, Lonzo lineup to start the fourth... McGee picked up two fouls to start the fourth and fouled out with 11:28 left. Chandler back in… Lonzo out with 5 fouls after just a minute and half. Ingram in… Up 4, Luke called a timeout after Barea was hurting the Lakers on the high screen plays… Shotclock violation out of the timeout… Up 4, with 8 to go he sat LeBron for Kuzma… Timeout Mavs, Lakers up 9. They hit a three out of that… Lakers up 11 when LeBron came in for Chandler to get him some rest. Lakers small now with LeBron, Kuzma, Hart, KCP and Ingram… Lakers in the bonus early this quarter and taking advantage… A lot of FTs and the Lakers extended the lead to 16… Lonzo back in and he fouled out a few seconds later. Svi in for garbage time…

Anyone knows what's with the groovy suits that the coaches were wearing? Is there some sort of event etc that I don't know about.

At first, I thought it was only Luke but then saw that the opposing coach was rocking something similar.

Just curious, since nba coaches usually wear muted coloured suits.

It's about Craig Sager.

Sager strong! Nice gestureby some of the coaches.

I was ready to throw my TV into the fireplace after Q1. Luckily they came around and the TV remains unschated.

Hopefully we get a shooter some time soon. Or some of our guys (Lonzo, Lance to name a few) start hitting those wide open shots. What good is the best drive and dish player in the history of the game, if you don't have anyone who can consistently hit those open shots?

Thanks again DB!

Missed this game again - I really appreciate these T&R's.

Hearing that Kuzma played a complete game, played solid defense, and seeing that he grabbed 12 rebounds and 6 assists in addition to his scoring?! Excellent!! I was starting to fear he didn't have it in him.

Very encouraging result to say the least.

Hopefully we get a shooter some time soon. Or some of our guys (Lonzo, Lance to name a few) start hitting those wide open shots. What good is the best drive and dish player in the history of the game, if you don't have anyone who can consistently hit those open shots?

That first quarter was brutal, I was bummed and distraught. In the end I was amazed that they found a way to turn it around and get that win.

Addn free throws to that.

They really need a new shooting coach.

Lakers need to call VladRad to teach them to put a little ark on their FTs.
