Shootout… The Lakers were off to a quick start as Kyle Kuzma dropped 27 points in the first quarter. He led the Lakers to 40 points out of the gates.

Unfortunately, they gave up 39 points with soft D.

Joel Embiid, who was a game-time decision, would finish with 25 points in the first half on his way to 37 on the day.

The Lakers trailed by 9 at the half. And like in the first half, the second unit got chewed up to close the third and start the fourth. The Lakers fell back by 20 quickly.

The Sixers are stacked. They’ve added pieces to now be a contender. Coming into Philly and trying to take this road game would not have been an easy task even without their additions. The Lakers just didn’t have enough on the defensive end to contain them, falling 143-120. It’s vital they take the next one in Atlanta.

LeBron -- -- He had 8 points, 6 assists and 4 boards in the first half on a triple-double pass, sinking a couple of threes and scoring off a spin move. Not a big scoring night, but he orchestrated the offense well. Defensively, he sagged off Simmons and plugged the paint. Really not effective. I mean Simmons didn’t do anything, but LeBron didn’t turn it into an advantage like he should have. I’m kind of surprised he didn’t get called for a number of illegal defense calls just standing there. But that was the key. It was just standing and not taking anything more away when it could have. He had to go up for a lob from BI and pull down a tough pass. He said that was a confidence booster for him with his health. He’d come up an assist shy of the triple-double. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-16 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 10 boards, 9 assists, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: Pocket pass to McGee on the roll for the And-1 dunk to start. He drained a three when his man went under the screen. He worked the two-man game and fed McGee for the dunk. He sank a three out of a timeout. He missed a layup but McGee cleaned it up. He hit Kuzma with a perfect bounce pass as he was cutting backdoor on the overplay for a reverse layup. Lob to Ingram on the break for the easy score. He missed a forced wing three. He pushed out a board, spun around his man and scored a layup. He missed a short one. He missed a three in transition. He attacked spun and fed McGee at the buzzer for FTs. Second Half: He missed a step-back three. He pushed out and took it the distance for a layup. He pushed out and bounced to McGee for a dunk. He went up high for a lob, pulled it down and scored a layup. He attacked and couldn’t finish a layup. He grabbed a board and fired down court to Bullock for the layup. He attacked left and scored a layup. He ball-faked and hit a 17-footer. He posted up and was blocked. Not close on a three, we stole it back and he scored a layup (good thing because he didn’t bother getting back).

Kuzma -- -- Sensational first quarter with 23 points from just about everywhere on the floor. He hit threes, midrange jumpers, scored on drive and putbacks. Very active. Luke played him just about the entire quarter to milk the hot hand. He’d finish the first half with 27 points on 9-14 shooting. He’d finish with the team-high 39. He and Harris had a little bit of a back and forth going early on and Harris would finish with 22. Both looked like they put in a bit more of a fight in defensively after that first quarter. When asked about the team’s poor D, he brought up missing Lonzo. “We kind of feed off him,” Kuzma said. He said it was still no excuse, but when you hear several guys saying that, it just shows that Lonzo is, indeed, the head of the snake for this team on that end. It’s the biggest part of Lonzo’s impact (which gets overlooked because of his shot), but when you’re dropping a 40-point first quarter behind Kuzma’s shooting, you hope to be up at least 10 instead of 1. Kuzma’s first quarter was the most points by a Laker in a quarter since Kobe’s last game. “We didn’t really defend tonight. The score showed it,” Kuzma said of the game. The Stats: He scored 39 points on 14-21 shooting (5-8 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He sank an 18-foot pull-up. He missed a wing jumper working off the screen. He sank a quick-fire wing three. He hit a floater getting out in transition with speed. He gambled for a steal and gave it right back a few seconds later. He drained a three straight away next time down. He drew FTs on a quick pull-up with a man on, he made both. He got tapped on a wing three in transition. He relocated to the corner with speed and hit the three. He drilled a quick-fire And-1 wing three, he missed the FT. Tough, heat check turnaround 18-footer and he missed. Quick attack from the wing and he scored a layup. He lobbed to Lance on the break, Lance couldn’t finish but Kuzma was right there with a putback And-1 layup, he made the FT. He backdoored his man to counter an overplay, took the pass and made a tough hanging reverse. He missed a wing three. Short on a long floater. He crashed the glass, yelled and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked and set up McGee for a score (after McGee blew the assist on the first one). Second Half: He was called for an offensive foul sticking out a leg on a missed three (pretty obvious). He missed a wing three on a kickout. Nice help and recover to his man to force a miss. He heard McGee screaming under the hoop and fed him for the layup. Sweet step-through from the elbow to score a short one. He cut as Rondo probed, took the pass and quickly banked in the one-hander as he turned the corner. He attacked from the corner, stepped around the defender and banked in the And-1, he made the FT. Good post D to force a tough miss. He faced up and drilled a wing three on the other end. He got snapped at by LeBron for dropping a pass out of bounds. Euro step in transition for a floater. He attacked and was stripped.

Ingram -- -- Offensively, he fit in pretty well tonight without dominating the ball much while other guys needed touches. You’ve got to keep getting the ball to Kuzma when he’s going like that. LeBron needs to have the ball in his hands. BI has to fit in that. He did well enough tonight. He even set up LeBron on a lob with LeBron working off ball. Hopefully, we can see more of that. He had 10 points in the first half, hitting all six of his attempts from the line. He’d finish the line a perfect 7-7. More of that, please! The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-11 shooting (7-7 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He attacked in transition and drew FTs on a short one in the paint, he made both. He missed a wing pull-up. Poor decision leaving Embiid open under the hoop in transition (trying to help while McGee trailed, but left too early). He kicked out to Kuzma for a three. He set up McGee for a short one off the two-man game. He attacked a crowd and couldn’t finish. He attacked Harris and drew a foul, he made both FTs. He posted up and threw a pass away. We got it back in transition and he scored a layup around Bogdan. He drew FTs battling on the glass, he made both. He scored a layup on the break when LeBron lobbed to him. He attacked from the corner and charged. Second Half: He iso’d and swished a baseline jumper. He attacked and lobbed to McGee for the dunk. A little high on the lob to LeBron, but he grabbed it and reversed. He iso’d and missed the step-back. Nice change on a crossover, he got deep into the paint, pumped and scored the And-1, he made the FT. He cut off a drive, took contact but couldn’t finish. He missed the short turnaround. He backdoored his man out of a timeout for a layup. He sank an open pull-up from the FT line. Bad angle and he gave up a dunk to Butler. He didn’t lob to LeBron and the pass was picked off.

Bullock -- -- Welcome to the team…you’re starting with your Kingston buddy along with LeBron. It was the Flint boys in the starting lineup who dropped 40 in the first half on the Sixers as Bullock couldn’t find his range early on. “We wanted to get Reggie going as quickly as possible,” Luke said of starting him. Plus, the Sixers are a big team. Reggie appreciated the confidence Luke had in him. He couldn’t get his shot on track, but I thought his defense was there. He was one of the few guys doing anything on that end as he had a couple of blocks and a steal. He was told he’d be starting and guarding JJ. “I felt like we broke down getting back or missing a switch,” he said. There were certainly a few miscommunications. Offensively, it will come along. “A lot of adjustments I can make to be more aggressive on the offensive end,” he said. The shots he took are ones he makes at a high clip. He’s good at coming off screens or taking handoffs and rising up. The kinds of shots that pretty much only KCP on this team can make. LeBron thought the starting lineup worked pretty well for them. It certainly helps when Kuzma goes crazy. Bullock gives the team a lot more depth. I’m looking forward to seeing Lonzo back and some of our rotations where Bullock is in there providing a higher level of two-way minutes during our lineup changes. Post All Star break we need to see it all come together. I’m looking forward to that chemistry building. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a leaning jumper coming off the screen. He blocked Simmons’ reverse. Interior feed to McGee for a dunk. He missed a long wing jumper. He got a stop fighting over the top of a screen. He missed a corner three with a man on. He fouled Redick on a tough, running corner three to give up an And-1. Second Half: He found McGee open under the hoop for a dunk. He challenged, leaked out and LeBron found him for the breakaway layup. He stole a ball at midcourt to save a hoop. Good job knocking the ball away under the basket to get another stop. He missed a three off a handoff (that’s usually his shot). Nice job moving laterally, blocking his man and controlling it.

McGee -- -- Offensively, he certainly chipped away at Embiid’s 37 by getting 21 points of his own. Credit teammates with finding him (LeBron with some good reads early on). He led the team with a +9, which has been rare to see. Embiid was too big for him in the post, but the Sixers didn’t exploit that a ton. Still, the size was tough and JaVale got into some foul trouble. Hard to say how we’d do with Zu backing him up, but without McGee in there we just weren’t competitive. His improved play is good to see. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 10-15 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 13 boards (5 offensive) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He threw down an And-1 dunk on the first play when LeBron worked the two-man game with him, he made the FT. He wasn’t ready for an interior feed from LeBron, dunk the other way (tough pass). He dunked off the interior feed from Bullock. He dunked off the interior feed from LeBron working the two-man sequence. He missed a baseline jumper. He blocked a throwdown attempt. He hit a short hook off the two-man game with BI. He cleaned up a LeBron missed drive. He was called for a travel. He blew an easy one, got it back and scored. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from LeBron with 0.2 left in the half, he missed both FTs, however. Second Half: He missed a layup falling down. He dunked off the lob from Ingram. Good job changing ends and LeBron hit him for the dunk. Left open under the hoop and Kuzma found him for a score as the D couldn’t recover in time. He dunked when Bullock found him open under the hoop.

Rondo -- -- We moved Rondo to the second unit to start Bullock. Rajon had 5 assists in the first half, but was missing his attempts around the rim. He’d end up scoreless. I really didn’t like the Rondo/Stephenson dynamic today with how badly Lance jacked shots. Rondo seemed a bit intimidated by the Sixer bigs and was not a scoring threat. I assume he will be back in the starting lineup in the next one, but who knows? The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting to go with 3 boards, 7 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: Quick outlet to Lance for a layup on the break. He couldn’t finish a layup on a drive. He missed a hook at the buzzer. He biffed a layup when the D didn’t close on him (got to finish those). He threw a pass away on the break. He stepped in to take a charge on Embiid in transition. Second Half: He attacked across the lane and gave it to Kuzma coming the opposite direction for a score. Nice bounce pass to Ingram backdooring his man for a layup. He attacked and threw it away instead of trying to finish, score the other way.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Really poor game by KCP. He was asleep on D most of the day. The second unit needs to bring energy and hustle. There was none of that. When Lonzo got back it will be interesting to see the rotations. Hopefully, it means Stephenson is out, but KCP will likely be looking for hard to find minutes, as well. If he’s soft on D like this then he’s time will be cut, too. Lakers need to find defenders right now. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a -23. The Action: Overplay and he gave up a layup. He missed an open wing three. He gave up a putback. He gave up a layup on a drive. He sank an 18-footer coming off the down screen. He kicked out to Muscala for an open three. Second Half: He gave up a layup on an inbounds. He stripped his man to get a stop. He iso’d and hit a tough turnaround he shouldn’t have taken. He gave up a layup on a drive. He missed a three straight away. He sank a long wing jumper.

Chandler -- -- Not much of a defensive factor in this one. Or really a factor of any kind. He didn’t score, missed his two FTs and didn’t get the D locked in for that second unit. The Lakers gave up 70 points in the paint. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting from the line to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -23. The Action: Called for a moving screen, turnover. He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he missed both. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Stephenson -- -- He was a -10 in the first half in 5 minutes. He managed to go 1-4 in that time, too. Luke wisely yanked him as we lost the lead in the process. But he’d go back to him in the second half and he quickly jacked up shots. You really don’t need him on the floor when we put Rondo as the bench PG and with Bullock now giving us more shooting depth. That seemed to also reduce Rondo’s impact on that game, as well. Lance finished with an awful -24 in 12 minutes. That’s the difference right there. Those 12 minutes of garbage from our bench. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-8 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He scored a layup off the outlet from Rondo. He missed a wing three next time down. He was blocked on a drive and wanted the foul. He iso’d and threw it to no one. Second Half: Back in and he quickly fired and missed a three. He got it back and sank the shorter wing jumper. He iso’d and missed a pull-up jumper next time down. He iso’d and threw a bounce pass away (that was all in about a minute of action). He missed a corner three (please sit him). He threw a bounce pass out of bounds when Moe was popping instead of rolling.

Muscala -- -- He started the second quarter at the PF spot across McGee. He quickly drained a couple jumpers from three range (one he had a foot on the line). Sixers have a couple of large bigs where we need to put some strong bodies on, so we weren’t going to be going smaller with him at the C spot until late in this one when the game was virtually over. He tweaked an ankle late in the game. He ran it off but hopefully it’s nothing. He showed the perimeter jumper off and a little of his mobility that they have been missing this season. We need the new guys to get on track quick. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He drained a wing three on the pick and pop out of a timeout. He couldn’t finish a layup on a break, taking a pass at high speed. He drained an open wing three on a kickout. Second Half: He missed a wing three on the pick and pop. Too long on the pick-and-pop three. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He sank a corner three.

Wagner -- -- Some garbage time minutes. Had we not had our new guys needing minutes, he might have been in there a little earlier. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 1 assist and no fouls in 3 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Quick attack from the corner and he missed a layup. He popped open at the wing and hit the three.

Walton -- -- Kuzma hot early as the Lakers took a 20-18 lead midway through the first quarter… Up 1 when Rondo, Chandler and KCP came into the game to go with LeBron and Kuzma… Stephenson in for LeBron with 3 minutes left up 5… The Lakers scored 40 points in the first quarter, but gave up 39. Kuzma with 23… He started a McGee, Muscala, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo lineup… Down 5 with this unit, Luke called a timeout after a couple minutes. Really should sit Lance for Bullock… He sat him for Ingram, fair enough… Starters back in with 7 minutes to go, Lakers down 4… Chandler in for McGee up 2… The Lakers trailed 76-67 at the half… They trimmed it to 3 before McGee had to sit with foul issues for Chandler after 5 minutes… He sat Chandler for Muscala to go with Rondo, KCP, LeBron and Kuzma down 7… Lakers down 12 when LeBron sat with over a minute left… He started a McGee, Ingram, Lance, KCP, Rondo lineup… Stephenson awful. Lakers getting blown out quickly… He brought back in LeBron for Lance, down 20 after a minute and a half… Kuzma in for McGee as we go small with 6:44 left. So LeBron, Kuzma, Ingram, Bullock, KCP, Lakers down 14… Sixers match by going small… Despite being blown out, Luke left the guys out there for some extra run to get some more time together…

Thanks, DB.

We kept it close for 34 minutes. The last 2 minutes of the 3rd quarter was the nail on the coffin.

LeBron was too passive. Didn't like his game today.

Thanks DB!

When you look at the bench +/- and see -18, -23, -14, -23, -24, you really have no shot at winning the game.

I was really hoping Lance would get traded at the deadline, especially after he knocked down Mo and didn't even help him back up; pretty unconscionable -24 in 12 painful minutes. When his 3pt shot isn't falling, or when he's jacking up pull-up long 2s without even trying to move the ball, or making careless turnovers, Luke needs to take him out and keep him out.

I don't know if Rondo was annoyed at getting pulled from the starting lineup, but he seemed disinterested for most of the game. Very odd.

On the plus side, Kuz (& BI to a lesser extent) looked really great out there.

I keep waiting on the Lakers to get a winning streak going and make a run, but time is quickly running out on this season.

I am just shaking my head. Another game effed up by Luke. You had a lineup that beat the Celtics in Boston. All you had to do was insert Reggie B into Josh Harts spot on the second team to let him learn. Instead Luke puts him in the starting lineup after one whole practice. Too many times I saw Reggie B and another Laker in the same spot on the floor or running the same action at the same time. Not to mention lack of defensive communication. Just stupid.

Thanks for the write-up DB.

The Lakers were HORRIBLE defensively. Our bench didn't do it's job and LeBron might have been a little bit too passive this game.

The new guys showed their potential but it will take some time--time that this team probably doesn't have. The reality is that the Lakers might not make the playoffs. If they can land a better draft pick-so be it. If they make the playoffs that works too. This year was a throw away year.

The Lakers are more than capable of doing some damage but they must get healthy to do that. The league is LOADED and that is a good, good, thing. Raptors, Bucks, and Sixers looking strong. I think the Celts are 4th best in the East.

Hopefully the Lakers get it together and put some wins together.

Did anyone else notice that the ABC announcers kept trying to make it sound closer than it was at the end, even when we were down by 19 with four minutes left? The game was already over but they kept trying to act like we had a chance.

The whole problem is defense, the defensive intensity and toughness is not there, and the team does not seem to be ready for these big games. The Lakers are going nowhere, they have not progressed into a better team but in fact have regressed. A sign of a well coached team is seen to what happens after a time out. Well coached teams respond to what the coach sets up after a time out and are able to create a good scoring play and or are able to respond defensively. This rarely happens on this team, they continue repeating the same mistakes and lack execution. Either the players don't listen or the message does not work.

Good thing all star break is coming up. This team needs the break to recoup and come back with some fire because time is running out.

First team to play some defence wins.
Of course, Lakers are nowhere in that competition.
And it starts with LBJ, great "leadership".

This. You cant have Lance as your 6th man. He is too inconsistent. You got a player in RB who can get in at 6 min mark and sub LeBron or Ingram and then get him back in at the 1min to end the quarter and start the second. Muscala got open looks, missed and in defense looks helpless.

Boy we sure let them take a bunch of uncontested 3 point shots

Kuz had a great game offensively fun to watch him.

Bright Spot. BI finally hitting FT

Thanks DB!

Disappointed in Lebron's game, he was way too passive on offense and defense. He took the day off and just mailed it in.

It seemed kind of weird/dumb to replace Rondo with Bullock in the starting lineup during his first game with us. Bad decision by Luke.

Thanks DB. This game had loss written all over it from the outset, but I thought the starting unit didn't do too badly, other than LeBron coasting a bit on defense. We had no problem scoring, but neither did Philly. Too bad we're down Lonzo, and I'd like to see pre-January Josh Hart come back after all star break too. That would give us a much more solid second unit, move Lance to the bench, allow Rondo to run the second unit offense without a Lance headwind, and provide much better overall defense for both units, assuming Lonzo and Hart are both fully healed of course.

Encouraged by Bullock. Right out of the gate he's commenting on switching errors on the defensive end, and he's able to get his shots right away, plugged in with the starters his first game with this team, with very little practice. In time, once he gets to know this team, I'm really looking forward to seeing how he fits. Particularly whether he can add more defense to this team.

So was I. That really ticked me off. A malcontent, surprise surprise. And he played a big role in this loss IMO.

people are blowing this loss way out of proportion. Lebron is still getting back up to speed, Lonzo is out leaving us with only one PG, and all the while the 76ers are pretty much the 2nd most talented team in the league after their trade.

It felt like any momentum from the Boston game evaporated as soon as Rondo went back to the 2nd unit.

DancingBarry.. probably knows this more then anyone, but curious to see the reason why KCP was shut out in the game, Bullock being the starter likely played a role in his game being in shook, but we can’t have 2 guys attempt like 6 FGs together when we need there scoring.

Hardly an excuse for not even trying to play defence.
