Is the Tank Half Empty or Half Full?… No Lonzo, no Ingram, no Kuzma…no chance. Which is really in the Lakers best interest now, and it would seem they know it.

The remaining Lakers gave up 43 points to the Nuggets in the first quarter. Yes, they were phoning it in, and, yes, they are supremely undertalented with all the injuries and patchwork roster fits. Tank on, 2018-19 Lakers, tank on.

On the way to the loss tonight, LeBron James hit a new milestone. He surpassed Michael Jordan in scoring with 5:38 left in the second quarter on an And-1 layup. And now the top four scoring leaders all have worn a Laker uniform.

It would take some supreme complacency by the Nuggets to lose this game.

While the Laker rotation regulars lulled the Nuggets into a false sense of security, Luke then quietly rolled out a G-League lineup that included Caruso, Wagner and Williams. These guys treat NBA minutes as a precious commodity.

They helped cut the once 23-point lead down to 8 heading into the fourth. They then forced a timeout cutting it to 2 after a couple minutes into the fourth. It was now anyone’s game.

The Lakers threatened to take the lead, but their bad habits caught up with them. Missed freethrows, offensive boards and a few misses at the rim and once again they were down big again. The Lakers fell 115-99.

LeBron -- -- He needed just 13 points to pass Michael Jordan and did that midway through the second quarter. Standing O from Staples in appreciation of a great career with a lot more scoring yet to come. He sat on the bench, covered his face with a towel and seemed emotional as the tribute was playing for him. His shoes had a thank you to Jordan written in pen on it. He said he wanted to be like Mike growing up and said he hoped he could be that same kind of role model for kids. “I’ve never been about scoring,” he said, as he stated he was always a pass-first player. Congrats on the milestone with many more to come. He had 17 points on 7-12 shooting in the first half. He’d finish with 31 in 31 minutes. Just not enough fire power out there with him. Really, around LeBron, you need more guys who can do a lot of the hustle stuff while he carries the load offensively. We just didn’t get a lot of that until the South Bay guys were on the floor. He struggled a bit from the line, missing his first four attempts. “I didn’t handle my emotions well from the beginning,” LeBron said. He said he wore No. 23 because of Mike and 32 because of Magic. He said meeting MJ when he was 15 years old was like meeting Jesus. "You guys have no idea what MJ did for me and my friends growing up. Just in the sense that some days you don't feel like you're going to make it to the next day where I grew up." The Stats: He scored 31 points on 13-22 shooting (2-7 from three, 3-8 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a floater on the first possession. His pass in the paint was picked off, not high enough. He was fouled on a reverse in transition, he missed both FTs. Lengthy pocket bounce pass off the two-man sequence to McGee for the reverse dunk. He was fouled and missed two more FTs, getting the fans angry early. He sank a pull-up three in early offense next time down. He swished another in early offense straight away next time down. He missed a fading wing three on the next possession. He bricked a turnaround in early offense. He missed a pull-up three in early offense. Nice bounce on an elbow fade and it fell. He swiped a pass. He missed an iso three. He found McGee flashing to the ball for the short jumphook. He sealed a man in transition, took a pass and scored a layup. Outlet to Caruso after a made basket for a layup. He iso’d and drained a baseline jumper over his man to tie Jordan. With 5:38 left he set a screen at the elbow, Rondo found him rolling off that for an And-1 layup to pass MJ, he made the FT (thankfully). He iso’d against Jokic, blew past him baseline and scored a layup. Second Half: He attacked and missed the runner. He missed a three on iso. He got middle and lobbed to McGee. He attacked in transition, spun and scored a layup. Interior feed to Moe for a layup. He missed a tricky reverse. He attacked baseline and scored the layup. He attacked for an And-1 lefty layup, he missed the FT. He hit Caruso on the break for the layup. He attacked in transition, initiated contact and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a three on iso. He posted up, spun baseline and dunked. Inside-out dribble to get into the middle of the paint and he dunked. He attacked baseline, hung and hit a tough reverse with some nice touch. He let the ball roll up court, waited to look and turned it over when pressured. He traveled on the break on the next possession.

Rondo -- -- He got the assist to LeBron to pass Jordan. He helped organize some of those hustle lineups offensively, but really not much of an impact. Late in the game, he sat on the sidelines a bit away from the team on some open courtside seats. The vets seem a bit done. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-7 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 7 boards, 11 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He attacked off the three line and fed McGee for the dunk. He found LeBron in transition for FTs. Interior feed to McGee off an ATO play for a dunk. Kickout to Lance for a corner three next time down. He charged on a drive. He attacked in transition and scored the backhand reverse layup. Bounce pass to the Nuggets for a dunk the other way. He missed a prayer trying to draw a foul. He blocked a turnaround. He hit Carso for the three. He missed a wing three. He couldn’t finish a layup on a drive at the end of the half, nice attempt, though. Second Half: He attacked and fired a pass to McGee for the layup. He missed an open three. Interior feed to Williams for the jumphook. Several kind bounces before the floater dropped as he worked out of the horns high post. He missed a floater. Harris blew around him for an easy layup.

Bullock -- -- Bro, if you’re going to take the techs, you need to make them. He went 0-2 tonight in typical Laker fashion. Hart missed a tech, as well. Sheesh. That’s just dumb. Reggie struggled with his shot again tonight. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 0-2 form the line) to go with 2 boards and 1 foul. He was a -13 in 20 minutes. The Action: He sank a 20-footer coming off a down screen. He missed a floater (should have lobbed to McGee). He gave up a layup. Second Half: He missed a step-back wing three. He missed a tech FT. Tapped on a deep three. He missed another tech.

Hart -- -- Moved into the starting lineup and he got lost in the shuffle quite a bit early on. He needed to do the little things the Lakers were woefully short at. Crack back on the boards, especially. The Lakers were getting dominated on the glass, and he only had one defensive board after we fell back by 20. Apparently, he was channeling his inner Barkley circa 2019. After hitting a three in the second half, he started to get more active and that helped make a difference as we had more hustle ball in the lineup. In the fourth, he struggled to finish at the rim on a couple of plays, definitely not able to get up and finish above the rim. The Stats: He scored The Action: He passed up a decent look a three for a step-back, off-the-side-of-the-backboard brick instead (and points the other way in transition). He dunked off the pass from Moe in transition. Second Half: He drained a wing three out of a timeout. He was yanked down from behind on the break, surprisingly a common foul, he made both FTs. No call getting mugged on the break. He missed a tech. He couldn’t finish a lob on the break (unable to get over the rim). He left his man and gave up a three. He was blocked on a breakaway layup.

McGee -- -- He had 10 points on 5-6 shooting in the first half. We set him up for a number of strong finishes at the rim. Jokic finished with 17 rebounds. No Laker had double digits in boards. Our young bigs gave the Lakers some better energy. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 8-10 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He dunked off the drive and dish from Rondo. Reverse jam off the nice bounce pass from LeBron. He stripped the ball off his man to get a stop. He dunked off the interior feed from Rondo. He altered one shot, then blocked another. He hit the short jumphook flashing to the ball. He couldn’t finish an oop out of a timeout. Caruso hit him for the And-1 dunk off the pocket pass, he missed the FT. He airballed a layup trying to get cute instead of going strong. Second Half: He sealed his man on a switch for low position on the first play of the half and scored the layup. Layup off the drive and dish from Rondo. He missed a runner. Lob dunk when LeBron got middle and found him.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Can we sit him for Andre Ingram or someone? That was my thought in the first half. Then we saw Caruso most of the second half with KCP out of the rotation. So the Lakers played better. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board and 2 fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He bricked a one-footed fade, not getting an attempt up for several minutes. He missed a corner three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Stephenson -- -- No chance, Lance. He had to play PF against Millsap. (Thanks, Luke!) That didn’t go well. He also had some poor hustle at times (transition D, just standing there off one turnover). No other stats tonight other than the shots he took. That says it all. He was a -15 in his 9 first half minutes and didn’t get off the bench in the second half. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-5 shooting (1-4 from three) and no other stats. He was a -15. The Action: He sank a corner three off the kickout. He missed a wing three. He attacked, hung and choked the layup. He missed a three. He missed another catch-and-shoot three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Muscala -- -- Some nothing minutes from him. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting from three to go with 1 board in 5 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a corner three out of a timeout. He missed a wing three. He gave up a putback score (second one). Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Wagner -- -- Up and down game from him, but he gave the Lakers good energy. Early on, Moe showed the ability to hit from three and the inability to get rebounds in the first half. He summed up the Lakers season on one play where he up-faked at the three line, attacked down the paint and soared in for the throwdown…only to get blocked by the rim. Glorious for a moment, then a disaster. In the second half, the rebounding and physicality on the boards improved and the Lakers went on a run. A little wild on the three ball as the game went along. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-11 shooting (2-6 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He sank a three trailing the break. He blocked a drive and it led to a Laker breakaway score. Great ball-fake and drive down the lane, then he came up short on the slam, uggh. He sank a wing three next time down. He threw a pass out of bounds. He airballed a wing three but hustled back in transition D to deny a score. Second Half: He scored a layup off the interior feed from LBJ. He backed his man down, spun baseline, stepped through and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Offensive board on a missed FT, but he was rejected on the layup. He missed a three. Nice feed to Williams for a reverse layup. He attacked off the three line and charged. He bricked a wide open three badly, got to calm your nerves and set up better. He missed a jumphook in the post. He stole a ball, then threw it away a few seconds later. He clanked another three.

Caruso -- -- LeBron praised the South Bay guys for the good showing and was disappointed the Lakers couldn’t pull off the win. He mentioned AC first. His energy at the guard spot helped change the game for the Lakers in the second half. He’d play 29 minutes and was a +1. They competed with him on the floor. He’d finish with a career-high tying 15 points. He also hustled on the glass and that makes a difference. Not enough team rebounding early on, but when they were getting those one and out possessions, that’s when they made up ground. Enjoyed watching him play tonight. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-11 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He missed a step-back three. He took his eye off a pass, turnover. He got down court after a made basket and LeBron outlet to him for a layup. He grabbed a loose ball and bricked the midrange jumper. He swished a corner three on a kickout. Pocket pass to McGee rolling for the And-1 dunk. He sank a pull-up 17-footer. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He threw a pass away on a probe. He missed a corner three. He attacked and scored the layup around his man. He attacked IT and drew FTs on the first possession, he made both. He took the pass from LeBron on the break, attacked and scored a layup. He fed Williams for a short one in the paint. He missed a wing pull-up. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup.

Williams -- -- He came in for LeBron in the second half. He brought energy like the rest of the G-League guys and that made a difference. He was battling and made the most of his opportunities when he got the ball in the offensive end. Made a lot of good decisions, as well. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-4 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards and 4 fouls in 15 minutes. He was +2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He scored a lefty jumphook off the interior feed. He was hammered off an interior feed trying to take a dribble as a player landed on him, he made one FT. Fouled in transition for more FTs, he made one. He missed a tip. He hustled for a loose ball, gave it up, got it back, attacked and scored the layup. He forced a guard into a brick on a drive. Caruso found him with a feed while in the air for a short one in the paint.

Bonga -- -- He came in for LeBron in the second half. He brought energy like the rest of the G-League guys and that made a difference. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 2-2 shooting from the line to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and no fouls in 2 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He attacked and fumbled the ball away. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made both.

Walton -- -- Kuzma joined the list of young starters all sidelined, so Luke slid Hart into the starting lineup… Lance in for Hart… Muscala and Wagner in for LeBron and McGee, down 9 with 4:47 left… Timeout down 12 a few seconds later… Not sure I should take any notes here for the rest of the game. The team isn’t competing. At least not the older guys… The Lakers trailed 43-25 after the first quarter… He started a Wagner, LeBron, Bullock, Hart, Caruso lineup… McGee in for Moe, Lakers down 18 after 3 minutes… McGee, LeBron, KCP, Caruso, Rondo lineup. Epic… A 9-0 Laker run force a timeout… Tribute for LeBron at this stretch. Stephenson in for him shortly later at the PF spot. That didn’t go well… Hart in for Stephenson… They trailed 66-49 at the half. A 31-17 advantage on the boards for the Nuggets… Lakers 1-8 from the FT line early into the third… Down 19 after 5 minutes, Moe in for McGee down 19… Caruso in for Bullock, who was bricking everything. Lakers down 14… Williams in for LeBron... Uhoh, Williams, Caruso and Wagner. You might see some G-League hustle here… Yep. They cut it to 8… They trailed 85-77 heading into the fourth… He started a Wagner, Williams, LeBron, Hart, Caruso lineup… They cut it to 2 and forced a timeout… Several opportunities to take the lead or tie, but they couldn’t get over the hump. Luke called a timeout after finally giving up a three to trail by 5… Rondo in for Hart, Lakers down 7… Down 9, LeBron out for Hart… LeBron in for Williams down 13 with 3:48 left… Game over…

Careful with that. The D-League team plays better than the vets. They might actually win some games.

Lebron blaming youth but the are the only ones who have played well this year.

Injuries are killing us.

Thanks, DB.

Definitely the most disappointing Laker team since the Detroit debacle in 04. Aside from the injuries, it was just a very odd confluence of Magic, Luke and LeBron seemingly torpedoing the team from three different directions simultaneously, at each available opportunity.

I'm sure Luke takes the fall -- and he certainly deserves his share of the blame -- but thus far, the worst predictions about LeBron's franchise wrecking have been realized mere months into his tenure, and Magic's deadline moves (Zubac more obvious than Svi... at this point) are an absolutely frightening portent of the future. I'm sure all will be forgotten if max free agent arrives and we see the WCF next year, but man, from the vantage point of March 7, 2019, it's not hard to imagine this organization wading through a trail of tears a few years from now.

Thanks for the T&R DB.

I disagree with the notion that tanking is an effective strategy for the Lakers right now. Free agents are going to have 2 major takeaways:

1) LeBron is too old to carry a team into the playoffs anymore,
2) The Lakers are too dysfunctional and poorly managed to put anything other than a lotto team together, even with LeBron on it.

So yeah, tanking is a great move, for the Clippers, Raptors, Pacers, Celtics their fans.

We may not have a choice, simply because of injuries and lack of investment by the one-year mercenaries we hired to get us through injuries. But tanking is going to give top tier free agents more hesitation to come here, and to me is just another way of saying we've spent 2 years throwing away half of a very promising young core that it took us 4 years to gather, all for nothing.

The bolded seems to be a reality based on how Jeanie, FO, Bron, and Luke have acted up to this point. I tend to agree with you about the dangers of tanking. But that's about all that's left for us to root for. More like rooting for the above figures to be humbled, as in "failure breeds success." I was rooting for the G-League Lakers to win last night's game.

DB,

I think it was more of the effort by the G-League er's than complacency by the Nuggets.

With 7:21 left in the third Mo came in with the score 76-57. With almost 12 minutes later at 7:37 left in the fourth, the Nuggets had only scored 11 points and the Lakers had scored 30 points. I saw lots of energy on the defensive end and lots of passing, cutting, moving, etc on the offensive end (basically everything I did not see in the first quarter).

We had a great chance to win but Gary Harris got hot and we had no one to stop him. With Ball and Ingram out, it was up to Alex Caruso to guard Harris and while the effort was there, the physical ability (size, strength, speed) as not. Living in Colorado I have seen several games where Harris gets stupid hot and other teams cannot stop him. Not Steph/Klay/Dame stupid hot but darn close.

Trading Zubac for Muscala is going to go down as one of the worst trades in Laker history. Write it down and put my name on it.

Muscala is making Travis Knight, Adam Morrison, Chris Mihm, and Kwame Brown look real good right now.

I dont know - trading away DLO with Mozgov to open up cap space they didnt need ranks right up there!

And lets not get into why they allowed Randle to walk!!!

Just don't put Chris Mihm in to this list. He was a very good player.
Then an injury killed his career.

Randle was not a trade. Bad move in hind sight.

Had to give up DLO to get Brooklyn to take Mozgov horrible contract.

No good reason to trade Zubac. Should have just cut Beasley.

They only had to dump the Mozgov contract IF they needed the cap space - it would up being used it on Caldwell Pope - so you telling me that trading DLO for Caldwell Pope was a good plan???

And I said they let Randle walk - it didnt take hindsight or a genius to see that was a very stupid move!
