Yup, even beyond this first (astounding) result, there's also the technology behind it. You've seen the telescope arrays where they arrange individual radio telescopes in a way that makes it function like a single telescope with one enormous mirror. This is extrapolating that technology to create a scope that's effectively the size of the Earth.

funniest to me is the thought that the calculation took so much data that they had to fly hard disks over on a plane instead of using the internet, because the internet was too slow for the amount of data they needed

really cool that we finally got the picture, and that the data backs it up
