Shouldn't there be something in return if you guarantee something? Like companies pay you when an item fails within the guarantee period.
So if the Lakers win a title, what does Lavar do? Will he go to Somalia or somewhere else and stay there? It's easy to make guarantees when you don't have to pay up.

After KD and Klay went down, my opinion changed on this trade. We have one year to win it all. One year to get number 17, if doesn't happen in 2020, it won't happen with LeBron.

I post at RealGM and I was told numerous times that the Lakers had zero chance, yada yada. Dudes were so sure of themselves, same thing with Brawn earlier..."The Lakers aren't gonna get ANYone!". When we got him, it was, "Oh, he just wanted to be in Hollywood, he doesn't care about winning anymore." I got the whole 9 yards regarding how our package for AD was trash (I hate that Millennial word). Anyway, as I told them they would, after the deal, a lot of them thought we got shaken down to the core. A day earlier, our yutes were trash.
We dealt 2 kids with some good facets, but not complete games, and both inconsistent for long stretches, and both susceptible to injury or medical conditions. The other guy Hart was not a star and not irreplaceable, though he was a cheery personality and that I'll miss.
As for the picks, the 4th pick was a guarantee to even be in the discussion, so no worries there. The other picks. Maybe Pelinka gave up one too many, but ultimately picks can generally be acquired at certain points. Also, even if we can get picks back, they'll be low, but our scouting dept is very arguably better at drafting late. As for any team, picks are pie in the sky. We won't know who "raypt" who until 4+ years from now. They could draft numerous busts. Sixers had a bunch of picks, some were great, others were Fultz and Okafor. You never know, even high in the draft.
Additionally, having two superstars and trying to compete for an actual championship (not just wanking around) usually entails foregoing picks for talent. Lakers gave up picks during the 3 peat and focused on paying Shaq and Kobe. You can win a title without future picks, what's much more important is piecing together a support cast that is mostly veteran in nature, with some guys who can shoot and/or hit clutch shots, but we need guys who don't wet the bed in May. People carping about the picks aren't seeing the big picture. That's beside the fact that we got a 26 year old superstar big. Another great bigman in the lineage. Maybe Jerry West could've given less than Pelinka, but we have Pelinka. For him, this is a landmark achievement. Maybe he can build on it and resurrect his image.
