I didn’t have any New Years resolutions this year, but over the weekend I figured I should have something. I’m turning 30 this year and I’m committed to finally realizing my childhood goal of dunking. Overall, I’m pretty out of shape but I think I can get back into it in short order. I’m 6’4” and about 185lb. Probably can only reach 9’6” as of now. So I think I will need to add 10-12”? Is that even realistic?

What do I need to do? Box jumps, plyo, and sprints?

Short cut: 9 and a half foot tall basket. Kidding. However I am keeping an eye on this thread as I would love to know as well.

Get a trampoline. Seriously, I remember something Barkley did. He would squat jump over objects starting at low heights and increasing to reach his ultimate vert leap. IIRC he jump sideways over the object.

EDIT: Also strengthen your calf and thigh muscles. I know a calf strengthening exercise. Stand on a step, toes only. Go to tip toe position. Do sets of 10. 3 4 sets at a time.

Get younger. At 5-11 i could dunk in high school, at 60 (on Saturday) I probably can’t touch the net.

Here is a documentary made by a 40+ old guy who actually entered a dunk contest at the end of his journey:

You have to figure out first if you jump better off one foot or two.

Then it is a simple matter of doing calf exercises along with any core work. You don't see a lot of fat guys dunking is what I guess I am saying, especially as you get older.

I am about your size but two decades older and apparently fatter as I weigh more. As a result, I am afraid I may have already put down my last legitimate dunk but it is a worthy goal to work towards....I know you can do it!
