They.do.have that sweet McDonald's Croatian big .mac.

I first read that as pig mac, which for all I know might be a thing.

If pig mac is not a thing, it ought to be.

Today seems like a good day to slack off with no guilt. From my viewpoint they should feel lucky I'm even here.

This is a thing and I never knew it actually existed.

I think I now know what everyone is getting for Christmas and Hannukah this year.

Hey man,

How are ya? Glad to see you back.

Alright, how do you feel about nurse assistant-tier patient care work at a large childrens' hospital? I did this job throughout undergrad. It's "easy" if you love people. If not, you won't last a week. I took 0 stress home during this job and it never hurt my body, even on nights.

Typical duties on shift include

-passing out water, updating whiteboard info in every patient room
-routintely weighing patients, sometimes babies as small as 3 lbs
-changing diapers
-1 on 1 sitting (for a full 12 hours) with patients who are suicidal, under special supervision, victims of violence, mentally ill or challenged, or otherwise compromised (sometimes)
-wiping butts of kids of all ages including tiny babies and 18 year olds who are incapacitated and have adult bodies
-bathing the same patients from head to toe, cleaning up after them in every way in their messiest, most vulnerable moments - vomit, blood, poop, pee, all of it. Oftentimes these patients come from the absolute bottom of the socioeconomic pyramid.
-maintaining a smile in your heart and being understanding and calm even when parents are verbally abusing you and, and sometimes their kids. Sometimes the abuse escalates to physical and you do get hit, although the hospital has beefy protocols for this so you won't get hurt
-communicating with physicians, social workers, case managers, nurses, and other ancillary hospital staff
-collecting trays, passing out blankets, other busywork
-sometimes answering phones (this freaks some people out more than the dirty stuff)
-using an electronic charting system to document patient activity under your role

and more...just can't think of all the things off the top of my head

starting hourly rate is something like $13 from 0700-1900; you get a couple of bucks extra/hour per night shift. You also get insurance + retirement benefits if you can get a part time/full time staff position.

If you take a per diem position your hourly rate goes up to $16-17, but you get no benefits, and no PTO. You do, however, get a much more flexible schedule--you can work as much (up to 36 hours/week) or as little (as few as 12 hours/week) as you want, and you have the ability to legitimately cancel your shift up to 24 hours in advance with no penalties. This is what I did...it's a great option if you're a student or have an otherwise busy/unpredictable lifestyle. You will be required to work 2 major holidays/year.

I started laying the groundwork for referring you a couple of weeks ago--I found out that the lady who hired me passed away last year, so instead of being able to guarantee that my referral would be an "in" for you, it's now a "probably". I asked my contact if the general unit could use a man, and if they're hiring, and said that I know someone solid. The only thing I haven't done is give your name, because I don't know it.

I still know a few people there, so if this sounds like something that interests you, please PM me and I will do my damned best to help. It's not for everyone, though, so if not, cool.

On today's episode of tech support for my 80+ year old father...

'how do I make the thing change?'

And yes, that's exactly what he asked me. No context whatsoever.

The correct answer is "right click on the thing." Alternatively you could ask Clippy.

After 5 minutes of questioning that made me want to cut myself, it turned out he wanted to know how to change the radio station in his car.

Don't we all forget the names of commonly used objects?

It was like playing the most painful game of charades. There should be old person versions of cars that have no tech whatsoever. Do you know the mental cost of having to talk him through using an infotainment system?

Some folks are trying to get him to get a smartphone. It takes every bit of restraint I have not to punch them in the throat when they mention it.

I imagine when I'm that age I'll have trouble navigating my flying car.
