Is it worth going to? Family is visting and they've seen most of LA.

One option is going to Vegas and doing a Grand Canyon Tour, but that's far.....and the bus ride is like 4 hours. Catalina might be more fun.

Any birdwatching or interesting hikes there? What is there to do there, exactly?

Catalina is cool. Somewhat weather dependent as far as getting there without a bumpy ride, but there are definnitely thinsg to see and do. It's a little cold for some of them (like snorkeling ), but there's a glass bottom boat.

Lot's of hiking - and as far as bird watching, there are lots of birds and though it's kind of remote, at the west end of the island are bald eagles to be seen.

If you have older folks visiting; those who will enjoy scenery and serenity, then Catalina is a great tourist spot. It may be a little too cold this time of year for any water sports, snorkeling etc. Kids will probably get more out of the trip during the summer time.

It can be boring.....I would pass on it and stay on the mainland unless you are going over for a weekend with the lady

If you don't mind people pointing and laughing at you, they have those pedal boats. You know, the kind where you sit in a seat, and pedal like you're on a bike. The lady made me do it. I want people to share in my humiliation, therefore I recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it yet.

I took a girl there a few years ago and yeah it's true about the boat being bumpy. I dropped her "$400.00" digital camera, or so she claimed, off the boat and straight into the water while trying to get a picture. That set the tone for the whole day. It sucked. Had to pay her back a few days later.

I think in any other circumstance, it would have been a nice trip. I actually wanna go back and check it out again.

I go there every so often. Frankly, I just go there to chill, drink, play with the kids, chill some more, enjoy the views... If I do anything, it's go kayaking, but not this time of year.

You can also hike, take a sub where you feed the fish, take a few different tours to hear/see about the island, etc. I've done all that, nothing spectacular.

Best times for me are always just relaxing after dinner and drinks, walking along the shorefront day or night, and doing dad stuff with the kids.

I agree with DB. I went there twice last summer -- camping with my daughter on the north end of the island, then back to Avalon with the whole family for three days. Both were really fun, but, keep in mind that it's not a high-energy, hopping place.

Catalina is the best for a day or two. The boat ride is part of the fun to me. Then you get on the island and rent a golf cart to tour the hills on both sides of Avalon city. The scenery is spectacular. Hopefully you get good weather. Its well worth it in my opinion.
