Hi guys and gals. I'm looking to buy a compact/ultracompact digital camera for my little brother's birthday. I'm looking to spend under $250 if possible. My last cameras were the Canon Digital Elph and a Sony Cybershot. I see that the prices for digital cameras have come down a lot and you get more mega-pixels for the price. Do you guys have any particular brands you'd recommend? I've checked out CNET for their reviews of a few makes/models but wonder what you guys have. Any help is appeciated! Thanks!

from a photographers opinion, stick with canon or Sony. You won't regret it. If you have more specific questions, feel free to PM me, I can't think this early...

This seems like the go-to site for digital camera reviews & recommendations:

http://www.dpreview.com/

At that site, Canon seems to be the most popular brand.

BTW, I use the Canon Powershot SD-750, which can be had for under $200. Save for a minor quirk or two, it's a great camera:

After you read a review you like, go check end user reviews for the same camera on Amazon. Also check Circuit City reviews.

Things to look for:

Don't fret over the mega pixel war. Anything around 6 megapixels is plenty.

Many advertise super high ISO, just marketing, the chips in these are too small to be useful over ISO 400.

Image stabilization is really nice, especially if you get a camera with no view finder.

Zoom on the compacts will typically be around 3x. This is optical, forget about digital zoom.

Check this one out on Amazon, it's getting great reviews and is in your budget:

Canon PowerShot SD850 IS 8.0 MP Digital Elph Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Good luck.

Agreed. A very good camera that's great for regular photography.

I think the main diff between the 750 and 850 IS is resolution (not a big deal) and Image Stabilization.

The IS may be worth the extra $.

I love my Sony Cybershot. It's by far the best digital camera I've owned...and I've been through quite a bit. It takes great night shots and the battery life is awesome.

Check out dpreview.com, as someone earlier suggested. That site really helped me narrow down the purchase of my cybershot as well as the purchase of my first Digital SLR. There's owner reviews as well as sample shots from most cameras. Really helpful and has links for the best deals for whatever particular camera you are interested in. =)

Good Luck.
