I have an HSBC Direct account. What I do is auto-transfer $100 a week from my checking account into that account. I won't miss $100 a week and its a few grand per year.

Just a heads up, I heard there's been a great deal of fraudulent activity going on with HSBC lately. Apparently entire accounts are being wiped out. Read about it here

Just check your account and make sure everything is there.

Regarding movie rental....try to visit your local library and see if the movie you want is there. I have rented movies for free plenty of times.

1) Blockbuster online. $17 a month, free in-store rental with a turn-in. Coupon for 1 free rental per month also good on Games.
2) Auto Transfer to savings (tacked on a little extra above the property taxes)
3) Brown bagging it.
4) Water not Starbucks
5) Instant oatmeal for Bfast. Good for cholesterol too.
6) Carpool
7) $7.50 movie tickets through work.

I cannot stress this enough.

Food is a big thing that I try to cut back on. I do not order soda, just fill up some bottles of water at my home. I do not like tap water. I also hit up the 99cent menu when eating fast food. . .Lately it has been Wendy's Chicken Sandwiches. . .no mayo and a small chili. Or just go to the market and buy some cheap, high quality foods.
For the Del Taco people. . .I will let you in on what I do. On the back of the receipt there is a free 1/2 pound burrito if you take the survey at machotacotalk.com. . .just keep doing that, it's a free burrito!

I just hate to piss money away. However, I am guilty of blowing loads(if you will) on basketball/baseball wagering, but I am confident in my abilities/control.
I am not the type to eat out at a restaurant and get ripped off. . .it's all business at these chain restaurants. That's all it is. I'll pass.

I don't buy frivolous (bleep) and the savings seem to magically accrue over time. That way I don't need a gasoline scheme or a bottled water scheme.

I don't "need" a gasoline scheme or bottled water scheme either. My car is a little bit lighter without a full tank, which makes it a little bit quicker and saves a little bit of gas.
I use bottles of water because I choose not to drink soda. I feel that water is more deserving in my body than soda. It's not really the money. A plus is that it does save money.
Even though you say you don't need these schemes, that doesn't mean that they won't help you save a little bit of money. It actually guarantees that it will save you money, and it should be better for you. Regardless.

Agree. I've exausted all the movies I wanted to see at the Library. This also works with music and recently released books. You'd be suprised how much new stuff your local library get's if you just call or go online and request they order it.

But, when the free movie well runs dry at the library, check out www.redbox.com. They are dvd rentals found in McDonalds and Wal-Marts and other places. They come out of a vending machine, ALL NEW RELEASES, and every video is $1.00 per day. That's it.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but only use ATM's from your own bank. So many times people get in a hurry and use whatever ATM is close, but you're getting charged probably $1.50-2 from both the ATM's bank and your bank, or to put it another way, you can get 1-1.5 gallons of gas with the savings by not being lazy.

Get an ING or other high interest savings account. Each paycheck, deposit whatever you can afford to deposit. Watch your $$$$ grow.

Use coupons - If you plan on going to Best Buy, BedBathBeyond, any store that has coupons then Google the store name and "printable coupons". Sometimes you'll find it, sometimes you won't. But you can save a bit of $$$ on items you were already planning on buying.

If you are single and own a home (like me), claim "2" and not "0" on your W-2's. The government takes out less $$$$ from you each paycheck. Come tax time, your house is a deduction so you'll still get $$$$ back. This only works obviously if you're making a certain amount of money each year. Talk to your tax guy before doing this.

Save $$$ by doing your taxes online. I do HR block online and it's a piece of cake. I hate #'s, but can't believe how easy it is. If you don't have a lot of deductions or income, do it online for like $15. If you live in California, CalFile is free if you meet the requirements. Saved $100+ last year doing it myself then going to HR Block and having them do it.

I agree with the above post in regards to ATM's. Also, go to the grocery store and get cash back that way. I bank at WAMU and they're not in every corner like BofA, but you'll always find a grocery store and I'll go in & buy something 99cents and ask for cash back.

Make sure at the pump you won't get charged a fee for using your debit. Arco does this. It may be cheap gas, but they also charge you an ATM fee. With the fee tacked on, it may not be that cheap.

Get a 401K & an FSA account at work. Get an FSA especially if you plan on getting medical or dental for the year. Ask your HR person about the benefits of an FSA account. The major one, is you won't get taxed on it.

The key to saving $$$ that all experts tell you is save, save, save. Get an IRA , 401K, savings accounts, etc. Watch your $$$ grow.

You're both wrong! "." is THREE syllables for a grand total of 7 syllables.
