Lakers Sign Meeks, Ebanks

EL SEGUNDO – The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent guard Jodie Meeks, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released. In addition, the team has also re-signed forward Devin Ebanks.

Meeks, a three-year NBA veteran, appeared in 66 games (50 starts) last season with the Philadelphia 76ers, averaging 8.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 24.9 minutes.

An early entry candidate out of Kentucky in the 2009 NBA Draft, Meeks was originally selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round (41st overall pick) of the 2009 NBA Draft. The 6-4 guard, who played three seasons with the Wildcats, led the SEC in scoring (23.7 ppg) and was named a unanimous selection to the All-SEC First team during his junior season.

Meeks holds career averages of 8.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 200 career games (114 starts).

A third year player out of West Virginia, Ebanks was selected by the Lakers in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2010 NBA Draft. The 6-9 forward appeared in 24 games (12 starts) with the Lakers last season, averaging 4.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 16.5 minutes. Ebanks also appeared in three games for the D-Fenders, averaging 18.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 32.0 minutes.

Ebanks has career averages of 3.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.30 assists in 44 games.

With the signings of Jodie Meeks & Devin Ebanks, the Lakers have 14 players under contract - 13 guaranteed. The only non-G is Andrew Goudelock. LA also has the draft rights to Darius Johnson-Odom - which they paid $500k to acquire in June & Robert Sacre taken at the end of the draft. It appears Meeks got partial Mini-MLE - even if the team cuts Goudelock - do they look at add anyone else? My guess is G-Lock and DJO battle in camp. Not sure LA signs anyone else (like KMart) except camp invites.

On the HW Lakers Team Salary Page - I have estimates for Meeks and Ebanks that has Lakers at $99.9 million in salary. With tax - that looks to be almost $130 mil in total payroll. There's no more amnesty this season and the only player with a non-guaranteed contract is Andrew Goudelock at just $762k. If Ebanks took his qualifying offer as reported, he - like Darius Morris - cannot be traded without consent (like a no-trade clause).

Actually, from everything we know, HOU did want him, they just wanted DH more, and since it was a 3 way which would net us DH, why would they take their second choice when they were providing the pieces for their first choice?

You're speculating that the Lakers were asking for the same pieces from Houston for Bynum that Houston was willing to give for Dwight. I have seen nothing to support that. I do think that Houston could have easily matched the Philly package for Bynum without giving up as much as it would have taken them to get Dwight; and this is obviously the case, as Orlando got more for Dwight out of the deal than was given up for Bynum (unless you value Iggy more than two 1sts, Afflalo, Eyenga, Roberts, cap relief, etc.: again, I don't, and I think most would agree with me).

Of course they were. LA wasn't trading Bynum for anything less than Dwight, and ORL wasn't sending Dwight out to LA and taking back less from HOU than they could get straight up. Simple math equation.

Sorry, don't agree with your math. Orlando got more for Dwight than Philly gave for Bynum, which adds up to Bynum being traded for less and the Lakers willing to take less for Bynum than it took to get Dwight. That's how it shows on my abacus.

Let me ask you this: why were Houston and Minnesota willing to empty the cupboards for a much older Pau--who didn't even make the All Star team at his position this year--but weren't willing to give up the same level of assets for Bynum, the 24-year-old-current-and-next-great-center? Wagering $100 million on those knees is frightening, that's why.

If we don't sign K-Mart, then the front office probably expecting Howard to not miss many games. That is unless they are confident a 3 man rotation of Jamison-Gasol-Hill is good enough for 96 minutes a night. I'm mainly worried about Jamison and Gasol. I don't want them playing 38-40 minutes a night while Howard is out.

I hope not. I really think he has potential--gets into the lane, nice little teardrop, and can hit threes. Just give the kid some PT.

I think Gouldelock is in danger of playing himself off the roster. There will be pressure on him during camp.

I have a feeling Darius Johnson-Odom will get serious consideration. We have a defensive-oriented head coach and no defensive specialist to go after speedy PGs.

2 years ago when Bynum missed the start of the season Pau tore it up and was a monster, but that wore him down and he fizzled at the end in the playoffs. This year, we have such a good schedule to start the season, I think 16 of our 1st 20 are at home and the other 4 are in the west.

If necessary, there's always Clark. Even Sacre, potentially.

Well, it'll be a 4 man rotation for now. Clark can play some PF, but is thin as a reed.

I see it as Pau (C:35mpg, too much); Jamison (PF: 30mpg); Hill (25mpg); Clark (whatever minutes left at PF).

I can see the team picking up a big man (true center size, maybe Sacre) to cover while Dwight is out though. It's a bit disconcerting since Pau is already probably a little gassed from the Olympics.

Two ways Glock makes the team: he suddenly develops court vision/ball handling better than Nash or 2) he just grew 4 inches this summer .

You're probably right. By normal NBA standards, he doesn't fit into a position. But I think he's going to have a decent NBA career because he has skills, regardless. At least trade him for a second rounder, for crying out loud.

I had my hopes for him too. He's a good shooter when open. But his lack of athleticism or strength at his size (as compared to DJO) make him weak on defense. At least DJO probably doesn't get bullied around, even by bigger SGs. Can't say the same about Glock. But some team will def pick him up and I agree if the Lakers can swing a trade for him, especially if we can get a backup center, I'd be interested. Interestingly, something like Glock for Kurt Thomas would be acceptable to me.
