NEW YORK: For the second year in a row, the New York Knicks top Forbes' annual list of most valuable NBA clubs, with teams an average of 25 per cent more valuable than in 2013.

Figures announced Wednesday on the magazine's website showed the Knicks on top at $US1.4 billion ($A1.6 billion) with the Los Angeles Lakers second on $US1.35 billion, the Chicago Bulls third at $US1 billion and the Boston Celtics fourth at $US875 million.

Just 10 days ahead of the February 1 retirement of NBA commissioner David Stern after 30 years in the post, the NBA has grown from a league dominated by superstars Magic Johnson and Larry Bird to a global business only beginning to tap revenue streams in India and China.

Where playoff games were televised on a delayed basis in the early days of Stern's era, they are now seen live in more than 215 nations.

Lakers are NBA's second-most valuable franchise according to Forbes

By Mike Bresnahan
January 22, 2014, 4:39 p.m.

MIAMI — The Lakers are losers in the standings but financial winners in a big way.

They were declared the NBA's second-most valuable franchise, behind only the New York Knicks, in an annual report released Wednesday by Forbes.

The Lakers are worth $1.35 billion, up 35% from the previous year, thanks mainly to their new television contract with Time Warner Cable. They earned $122 million last season from TWC, more than 20 times what the Charlotte Bobcats and Milwaukee Bucks received from their broadcasting partners, according to Forbes.

The Lakers are in the second season of a 25-year, $5-billion TV deal with Time Warner.

"It's the value of live sports programming," said George Belch, chairman of the marketing department at San Diego State. "What's happening is that sports right now have just gone through the roof if you look at the NFL, MLB, NBA, college sports. You've just got a tremendous amount of competition for it.

"The networks still want to use sports as a platform, you've got ESPN and the new Fox sports entity. Everybody's stepping up their game, even the cable companies themselves like Time Warner. If you're a sports property, particularly in L.A., you're in a very good situation."

On the air: TV: TNT; Radio: 710, 1330.

Records: Lakers 16-26, Heat 30-12.

Update: The Lakers could be swept by Miami for the third time in four seasons. Dwyane Wade sat out the last three games because of chronic knee soreness, and it was unclear if he would play against the Lakers. Wade and Chris Bosh each had 23 points when Miami beat the Lakers on Christmas, 101-95. The Lakers trailed by three after three quarters but were undone by a 4½-minute scoring drought in the fourth.

Preview: Lakers at Miami Heat

The Lakers (16-26) play their fifth game on a seven-game road trip Thursday night when they visit the Miami Heat (30-12).

Miami has lost four of its last seven games, struggling with Dwyane Wade missing games while dealing with knee problems. His status isn't yet clear for Thursday night.

The Lakers gave the Heat a challenge on Christmas Day before falling short late in the fourth and losing by six, 101-95.

The team has since lost Jordan Farmar (hamstring), Xavier Henry (knee) and Shawne Williams (waived) while adding Manny Harris.

The Lakers will also be without Kobe Bryant (knee), Steve Nash (back) and Steve Blake (elbow).

Key matchup

LeBron James is still the best player in the NBA, averaging 26.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 6.5 assists a game while shooting 58.0% from the field.

The Heat typically put James at power forward, where the Lakers start rookie Ryan Kelly.

Expect Coach Mike D'Antoni to ask Wesley Johnson to take the James matchup with Kelly on Miami forward Shane Battier. Johnson may not have an easy time with James, but Kelly doesn't have much of a chance at all.

The Lakers aren't going to match James' offense individually but Pau Gasol is their best inside scorer and Nick Young has been a steady force from the perimeter.

Los Angeles Lakers (16-26) at Miami Heat (30-12), 8 p.m. (ET)

BY SPORTS NETWORK
THE SPORTS NETWORK
(SportsNetwork.com) - When the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers used to play, it was must-see TV.

Nowadays, it's not quite the same.

Yes, there will still be anticipation Thursday night when the Lakers visit the two-time defending NBA champs, but the matchup has lost some of its cache.

Kobe Bryant is not in the lineup for the Lakers, battling a broken bone in his knee. He's scheduled for further evaluation when LA gets home after this seven-game road trip, where it is 2-2 so far.

Even Steve Nash is gone and before the rash of injuries last season, the Lakers weren't the same old Lakers.

The Heat have been fine, but not great of late.

They've won three of four, but lost four of seven and their 93-86 victory over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday showed some signs of greatness, but also some signs of fatigue.

The Heat led by as many as 18 in the first half, but trailed by two in the fourth quarter before LeBron James netted seven of the game's last nine points.

James scored 11 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and also grabbed eight boards and dished out four assists for Miami, which was coming off a 2-4 road trip.

"Versus a team like this they're going to bring a lot of energy and effort and you have to match that," James said. "We were ready for anything tonight."

Phil Jackson on Bryant's return: 'People are going to be surprised'

Phil Jackson talks Lakers, coaching and basketball in general on Fox Sports Live

By Eric Pincus
January 23, 2014, 8:00 a.m.

Former Lakers coach Phil Jackson said he expects Kobe Bryant to make a strong return before the end of the season.

"I think that he's going to be able to perform at a high level. People are going to be surprised," Jackson said in an interview Wednesday on Fox Sports Live.

Jackson noted that Bryant's game will need to evolve as he works his way back post-injury.

"I think post-up game and screen roll is going to have to become ... a major part of his game. I don't think he's going to be able to just break [players] down [off the dribble]," Jackson said. "Defense becomes the biggest problem .... as you get old."

With the Lakers (16-26) struggling, Jackson said Bryant should sit out the rest of the rest of the season if he's not healthy by April.

"If it's somewhere in the middle of February or March, I think he'll want to come back and get to that level again," Jackson said. "The only way you get to that level is playing against [NBA talent]. It doesn't happen on the playground or in the summer."

Jackson also reiterated that his coaching days were behind him.

"I'm not going to coach again," Jackson said. "I've done my coaching and I think I can put that aside."

Phil Jackson: Kobe told Michael Jordan he would kick his 'ass'

By MIKE FOSS

Kobe Bryant has never hurt for confidence. And when you’re as accomplished as the Black Mamba, it’s hard to blame him. But despite five NBA championship rings, 15 All-Star appearances, and an MVP award, Bryant is still considered by many to be a lesser player than Michael Jordan.

During an interview with Fox Sports Live, Phil Jackson shared an anecdote from one of the first times Kobe and MJ met. After a Lakers game the year following Jordan’s second retirement in 1999, Jackson asked his former superstar in Chicago to talk to his new talisman in Los Angeles a little bit.

“Let’s meet in the chairman’s room after the game, I want you to talk to Kobe a little,” Jackson recalled asking Jordan. “I think if you convince him to just wait, just be patient allow the game to come to him … because the team kind of loses their offensive direction.”

Jackson led Jordan into the meeting room where Kobe was waiting.

“The first thing Kobe says is, ‘I could kick your ass one-on-one,’” Jackson said.

LAKERS-MIAMI PREVIEW
By Noey Kupchan | January 22, 2014

After a disappointing road trip, LeBron James and the Miami Heat got back on track behind a stifling defensive performance.

Defending their end of the court has made a world of difference for the back-to-back NBA champions.

The Heat try to continue their recent domination of the struggling Los Angeles Lakers as these teams meet Thursday night in Miami.

The Heat (30-12) had surrendered 103.8 points per game during a 2-4 trek before clamping down in Tuesday's 93-86 win over Boston. Miami held the Celtics to 39.3 percent shooting and finished the game on a 9-0 run after trailing 86-84 with 3:08 left.

"Even if it wasn't perfect, the possessions meant something to us, mistakes meant something to us," coach Erik Spoelstra told the NBA's official website. "It starts with that type of pride in our defense." The Heat are giving up 98.5 points per game, higher than their marks of 92.5 in 2011-12 and 95.0 last season. Miami is 25-1 when holding teams to fewer than 100.

"It's the only way we're going to be able to win games, if we defend," James said.

James led the way with 29 points against the Celtics, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter. Chris Bosh added 16 on 7-of-10 shooting for Miami, which was without Dwyane Wade (knees) for the third consecutive game. Miami is 6-6 when Wade sits out.

"It's difficult doing what we do," Bosh said. "But that's why we're the champs, to do the difficult thing again and get the job done. Tonight was a good start. We just have to build off of it."

The Heat would appear to have a good chance to do that against the Lakers (16-26). Miami has taken three straight and seven of eight in the series after pulling out a 101-95 victory at Los Angeles on Christmas Day. Bosh and Wade scored 23 points apiece as the Heat shot 51.3 percent and held a 58-26 edge in the paint.

After this contest, Miami faces San Antonio and Oklahoma City to conclude a four-game homestand.

"It's a good test for us. The Lakers are a really good team, too. They're just in an unbelievable conference," James said. "Obviously we know what the Spurs and OKC are all about. We're looking forward to playing against these three teams, but it starts with the Lakers, and then we go from there."

Los Angeles, in the midst of a season-high seven-game road trip, had posted back-to-back wins before suffering a 102-100 overtime loss to Chicago on Monday. The Lakers are 3-13 in their last 16, giving up the winning layup as time expired in OT.

The Laker 2014 All-Star, Nick Young

BY MIKE GARCIA - JAN 23RD, 2014 AT 9:29 AM

PREVIOUS
The Laker team has suffered enough. Injuries and losing streaks can wear down one’s enthusiasm for the team for the fans. But, there’s one player that doesn’t waver. He can’t stop from smiling. He tried to interview like Kobe Bryant. He’s doing what he can on the floor. He plays with energy and fervor to give the Lakers a fighting chance. His name is Nick Young.

Jodie Meeks has been a model of consistency all season. If there was an award for most improved player on the team, it would easily be him. Not only is it tremendously difficult to improve ball-handling skills at the NBA level, it’s another to implement it so effectively. He has more total layups halfway through this season than he has had all last season. Despite multiple point guard changes, his 3-point percentage is at a 39.3% clip. When Steve Blake was at the helm, it hovered around 45%. He keeps his energy up, and his name should be mentioned, because he worked his tail off and it shows on the basketball court.

Nick Young has become the team’s #1 option off of the bench. When the season started, he had a false start of his own. His field goal percentage was below 40%. After two games, it was actually at 26.3%. He struggled to find himself within the offensive scheme. This is critical, considering Pau Gasol demands isolation plays on the low block. Nick Young wasn’t used to playing alongside an inside presence. Coming off the bench ended up a blessing in disguise. He began to run a few curls. He ran some pick-and-roll situations. He ran some isolation situations from 20′. His numbers across the board improved. He was more confident with his shooting and was able to get a few isolation looks of his own.

The Forum: Should Kobe Return This Season?
For those who find comfort in the concept of tanking, the Los Angeles Lakers 102-100 overtime loss to the Chicago Bulls on Monday night was just about a perfect game. The undermanned Lakers gave it a game effort on the second night of a road back-to-back, got another good look at budding rookie power forward Ryan Kelly, a legitimate star turn from Nick Young, and then lost at the end on a heartbreaking layup by Taj Gibson to fall back to 13th place in the Western Conference.

Plenty of things to feel good about on the court, and then hopefully a few more ping pong balls for their lottery chances in June. Perfect. Tanking without actually trying to tank.

Celebratory moments have been few and far between for this year's Lakers squad.
Rationally, it makes a lot of sense. Find hope or comfort or solace in being rational about a miserable, lost season. Point to the Oklahoma Cities of the NBA and the way they endured a couple years of pain in order to land Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden at the top of the lottery. Replay Andrew Wiggins mix tapes endlessly and photoshop Laker jerseys onto him. Go read old stories about how the last time the Lakers were in the lottery executive vice president of player personnel Jim Buss took a liking to Andrew Bynum and made sure the team drafted him 10th overall while teams ahead of them had googly eyes for guys like Charlie Villanueva, Martell Webster and Ike Diogu.

Rationally speaking, this is what a team and its fans are supposed to do in moments like these, right?

Its a hard sell to any franchise. Its virtually impossible to a proud organization like the Lakers, who have only missed the playoffs twice since the Buss family bought the team in 1979.

MIAMI -- Dwyane Wade has resumed a conditioning and rehabilitation program on his troublesome knees and will miss his fourth consecutive game Thursday when the Miami Heat face the Los Angeles Lakers.

Wade, who worked out Thursday, has already missed 12 games this season and hasn't played since Friday.

"Heat Nation does not need to be panicked," coach Erik Spoelstra said during Thursday's shootaround. "In terms of Dwyane's health, we've said it time and time again: It's going to be a process. There's absolutely no way I'm going (to look) days ahead.

Dwyane Wade, who has already missed 12 games this season because of troublesome knees, will not play Thursday against the Lakers. "Heat Nation does not need to be panicked," coach Erik Spoelstra said.
"I know he's feeling much better today to be in there working. That's a good sign. We'll see how he feels tomorrow. Maybe he'll do a little bit more."

Spoelstra wouldn't confirm if Wade had a setback in his recovery from an offseason knee procedure, but he said a grueling stretch of games in a short period of time over the past three weeks caused some some wear and tear on Wade's body.

The Heat played a stretch of 11 of 14 games on the road before returning home Tuesday for a four-game homestand. Overall, the Heat have played 15 games in 28 days.

Wade last played during the Heat's win in Philadelphia last Friday, when he missed seven of his 11 shots, scored just eight points and appeared sluggish on defense. That came two days after Wade scored eight points and seemed a step slow during a blowout loss in Washington.

Lakers' Kobe Bryant voted to 16th NBA All-Star team

Lakers All-Star guard Kobe Bryant acknowledges a fan while watching an NCAA basketball game between Duke and Miami on Wednesday in Coral Gables, Fla. (Alan Diaz / Associated Press / January 22, 2014)

January 23, 2014, 4:25 p.m.

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was voted by the fans to his 16th NBA All-Star team, the league announced Thursday.

Bryant will represent the Western Conference along with point guard Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors and forwards Blake Griffin of the Clippers, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Eastern Conference All-Stars voted to start are forward LeBron James and guard Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat, point guard Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers, forward Paul George of the Indiana Pacers and forward Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks.

The big question for Bryant: Will he be able to play in the game on Feb. 16?

The Lakers guard is recovering from a knee injury after missing most of the year while rehabbing a torn Achilles' tendon. The team will reevaluate Bryant next week to determine if he's ready to return from a lateral tibial plateau fracture.

If he misses the game, the NBA's commissioner (either the retiring David Stern or incoming Adam Silver) will assign a replacement.

Bryant recently lobbied voters to selection.

Kobe Bryant explains why he doesn't deserve to be an All-Star

By SEAN HIGHKIN 5 minutes ago @highkin

Kobe Bryant was voted a starter in this year’s All-Star game, and agreed with the legions of people complaining about it.

“There are guys that have been out there playing extremely hard all year long,” Bryant said in a brief interview clip that aired on TNT during the Lakers’ Thursday night game against the Miami Heat. “Players that are very deserving of being in the All-Star game that I think should be out there playing.”

Ailing Bryant gets NBA All-Star nod

(AFP) – 24 minutes ago

Los Angeles — Kobe Bryant, sidelined by injury for all but six games this season, still gained a 16th NBA All-Star nod in fan voting for the mid-season exhibition announced on Thursday.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar made a belated season debut after recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, but played just half a dozen games before a broken bone in his knee put him out of action again.
Bryant's 16 All-Star selections trail only the 19 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar garnered in a Hall of Fame career.
There's a good chance the 35-year-old Bryant won't take his place in the Western Conference back court when the game is played on February 16 in New Orleans, but he still finished second among Western Conference guards in the balloting, behind Golden State's Stephen Curry.
Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant topped the West in votes and is joined in the frontcourt by the Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin and Minnesota's Kevin Love. Love overtook Houston's Dwight Howard in the last week of voting.
Durant fell shy of overcoming Miami Heat star LeBron James as the top overall vote-getter.
James, earning his 10th All-Star nod, will be joined in the Eastern Conference starting lineup with his Heat teammate Dwyane Wade, who will also be making a 10th All-Star appearance.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stephen Curry, Kevin Love, Paul George and Kyrie Irving were voted NBA All-Stars Thursday, putting four first-time starters in the Feb. 16 game in New Orleans.

Kobe Bryant was elected by fans to his 16th All-Star game, second-most in NBA history, but this one is shaping up as a kids' game.

Curry, perhaps the biggest snub last season, will join him in the Western Conference backcourt. Love passed Dwight Howard in the final days of voting and will start in the frontcourt along with Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant and the Clippers' Blake Griffin.

LeBron James was the leading vote-getter with 1.4 million and Miami teammate Dwyane Wade also was voted in Thursday. George, who has led Indiana to the league's best record, and New York's Carmelo Anthony are the other East forwards, and Irving will start at guard.

Miami Heat 109 - Lakers 102 (end of regulation)

The Lakers made a game of it but the Miami Heat held off a Lakers' run, completing a two-game season sweep, 109-102.

Chris Bosh had his jumper working all night, scoring 31 points on 15-of-22 shooting. LeBron James scored 27 points with 13 rebounds and six assists as Miami improved to 31-12 on the season.

The Lakers got 22 apiece from Pau Gasol and Jodie Meeks, along with 19 off the bench from Nick Young.

Gasol also had a double-double with 13 rebounds. Kendall Marshall dished 11 assists as the Lakers shot 45.5% from the field.

Miami scored at will most of the night, hitting 57.7% from the field and 40% from three-point range. They helped give the Lakers life by missing 12 free throws in 23 attempts (47.8%). The Lakers hit 13 of 21 from the line (61.9%).

The Lakers, playing again without Kobe Bryant (knee), Steve Nash (back), Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring) and Xavier Henry (knee), never led in Miami.
