Lakers rumors: Trade deadline impending, latest details on LA team's NBA roster

February 19, 2014
Lakers rumors abound this week with the NBA trade deadline impending soon, and the Inquisitr provides the latest details on the LA Lakers’ possible roster changes this Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014. This time of year before the professional basketball season is a major one for fans hoping to see which players will be signed on to which team, and the competition outside the court can oftentimes be as heated as it is during a game.

This 2014, the LA Lakers are already rumored to be showing a particular interest in Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The latest inside information even suggests that they are willing to offer a special trade deal in order to acquire Love for their NBA roster. However, the Lakers will likely be facing some serious opposition from the Dallas Mavericks, who also seem intent on claiming Love’s signature for their own team.

According to the press release, Love was originally anticipated to make a move over to the West Coast after becoming something of a free agent during the summer months this 2014, but the Lakers rumors suggest that the talented LA team was unwilling to wait that long. The team seems focused on landing him before he can be scooped up prior to Thursday’s impending trade deadline.

In other basketball news, a potential deal might also include Pau Gasol as well as a coveted first round draft pick. Says one inside source on the potential trade and player acquisition as the Lakers work to form their new roster:

“The Lakers, Love’s first choice, ‘have the best shot’ of landing the Southern California native, one person familiar with the player’s thinking said.”

Cavs' Luol Deng Back on Trading Block, Bulls Not an Option
By Dalton Russell

COMMENTARY | Apparently the Cleveland Cavalries thought trading away three draft picks and Andrew Bynum for the opportunity to rent former Chicago Bulls small forward Luol Deng for a month was a really good idea -- it is still a mystery to me why their franchise is in disarray.

Whether Deng is able to escape from Cleveland at the deadline or not, Chicago will not be one of cities looking to harbor this future Ohio fugitive.

Why the Bulls Will Not Look to Trade for Him

I've heard a lot of fans talk about how cool it would be if the Bulls just went right back and traded for Deng, essentially swiping three picks from Cleveland for nothing.

The simple, and most obvious, reason Deng will not be back in a Chicago uniform this season is because he isn't allowed to.

Sources: Cavs shopping Luol Deng

Cavs Making Luol Deng Available For Trade

Brian Windhorst discusses the reports that the Cavaliers are making recently acquired Luol Deng available ahead of Thursday's trade deadline.

Trade Deadline Impact
As they evaluate the team and look to make a deal to help secure a playoff berth, Cleveland Cavaliers officials are making recently acquired Luol Deng available ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, multiple league sources told ESPN.com.

The Cavs traded three future draft picks and Andrew Bynum to the Chicago Bulls to acquire Deng on Jan. 7. But the deal hasn't worked out as hoped.

Lowe: Cavs' Playoff Fever Dream
The Cavs badly want to make the playoffs but have to be very careful overreacting to a cute five-game streak, Zach Lowe writes. Grantland

Cleveland isn't determined to trade Deng, but with his impending free agency a concern, acting general manager David Griffin is testing the market for the veteran forward.

Getting value for Deng may be a challenge because his contract expires in June. He cannot be packaged with another Cavs player in a deal due to trade rules, though trades can be structured to get around this issue if teams are motivated enough.

Moving to a younger team and changing cities for the first time, Deng hasn't always felt comfortable with his new teammates and coaches in Cleveland, and his play has suffered. He is averaging 14.6 points on 41 percent shooting in 18 games, a slip from his numbers in Chicago, where he was a primary offensive option.

Sources say the Cavs are concerned about being able to re-sign Deng this offseason, as he'll be an unrestricted free agent for the first time. Several teams with cap space, including the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks, are expected to be interested in Deng.

Lakers Rumors: Lakers expected to target forward Luol Deng in free agency

February 19, 2014
It remains to be seen if the Los Angeles Lakers will be able to make a move before the NBA trade deadline. Kevin Love appears to be the team's top trade target, but there's no telling if that'll go down before Thursday. Even if the Lakers aren't able to make a considerable move, the storied franchise will likely make a run at Luol Deng in free agency this summer according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN on Feb. 19:

Sources say the Cavs are concerned about being able to re-sign Deng this offseason, as he'll be an unrestricted free agent for the first time. Several teams with cap space, including the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks, are expected to be interested in Deng.
Not only will the Lakers be competing with the Dallas Mavericks for Love's services heading toward the NBA trade deadline, but it appears they'll also being battling Mark Cuban and company to sign Deng this summer.

Although it still remains unclear what direction the Lakers plan to take in the off-season, it's safe to assume Mitch Kupchak and company will not stand pat with the current roster. Signing Deng would be a move in the right direction if they don't break the bank to bring him in.

NBA Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers’ Jim Buss, Mitch Kupchak meeting Wednesday

BY ANDREW MELNICK - FEB 19TH, 2014 AT 7:36 PM

As always, the Los Angeles Lakers are front and center when it comes to trade rumors.

There has been a lot of talk surrounding veteran power forward Pau Gasol. He reportedly does not want to remain in Los Angeles beyond the season and rival executives believed that meant he could be headed to the Phoenix Suns. The Charlotte Bobcats and Minnesota Timberwolves have also been mentioned in connection with Gasol, but a deal does not look like it will get done.

Gasol just wants these next two days to go by.

If a Lakers’ big man is traded, it will likely be Jordan Hill. Hill has interest from the Brooklyn Nets, who were said to be progressing towards a deal, and Cleveland Cavaliers, among others.

As the Lakers continue to play with star guard Kobe Bryant, general manager Mitch Kupchak and team president Jim Buss are set to have a meeting Wednesday night to discuss the team’s future, according to Sean Deveney of the Sporting News.

But the Lakers are also considering moving forward Jordan Hill and the $3.5 million on his contract. The Nets have discussed taking on the deal and would be able to absorb his salary with the disabled player exception they received when Brook Lopez was injured. That would save the Lakers not only the remainder of Hill’s salary, but also about $6 million in luxury tax payments.

Lakers trade Steve Blake to the Warriors
By Royce Young | NBA writer
February 19, 2014 9:40 pm ET

The Lakers have taken a step towards joining the 2014 tank-off.

According to multiple reports and confirmed by CBSSports.com's Ken Berger, the Lakers are trading point guard Steve Blake to the Warriors in exchange for guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks.

The Warriors have been in desperate search for added bench help behind Stephen Curry, and Blake is a quietly terrific backup point guard. They added Jordan Crawford earlier in the season, but he's not quite a true point guard complement, while Blake is quality shooter and good showrunner.

The Lakers add two players who are both young, though not guaranteed to be part of their future. Brooks is on an expiring deal and Bazemore will be an unrestricted free agent unless he's tendered a $1.1 million qualifying offer, which seems unlikely.

And there's this: The Lakers will trim about $3.5 million off their luxury tax bill with this move.

The Lakers have agreed to trade point guard Steve Blake to the Warriors in exchange for guards MarShon Brooks and Kent Bazemore, according to multiple reports.

Yahoo Sports and the Los Angeles Times both reported the deal’s terms on Wednesday in advance of Thursday’s trade deadline. The Warriors possess a trade exception that facilitates the agreement.

Blake, 33, is averaging 9.5 points, 7.6 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 33 minutes per game over 27 appearances for the Lakers, although he has missed time this season with an elbow injury. The 11-year veteran is making $4 million this season in the final year of his contract.

Steve Blake dealt to Golden State
Updated: February 19, 2014, 10:13 PM ET
By Dave McMenamin | ESPNLosAngeles.com

Lakers guard Steve Blake has been traded to the Golden State Warriors for a pair of reserve shooting guards.

The Lakers will get Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks from the Warriors, sources told ESPN.com.

"Mixed emotions, really," Blake said after changing into street clothes and exiting the arena less than an hour before tip-off of Wednesday night's game against the Houston Rockets after being informed of the trade. "I knew it could happen but didn't expect it to happen, all at the same time."

Lakers sources told ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne there is a strong chance power forward Jordan Hill is also moved before Thursday's trade deadline, with the Nets, Pelicans, Bobcats and Hawks having registered interest in him.

"The hardest thing is really for my family, really," Blake said. "I got a wife, three little kids and now I'm going to have to spend four months, probably, away from them and so that's going to be the hardest part."

Blake called the 31-22 Warriors a "really, really good team" but was unsure what his role would be.

"How I fit in, I don't know but we'll figure it out," Blake said. "I got a lot of respect for them there and look forward to getting to know them."

I think it's a good trade for us... It gets us younger and deeper ( Blake wasn't going to play much in the future anyway... We're set with Marshall and Farmar, plus I think we're looking to draft Exum...

Decent trade.

Good trade? Only to save money.

Blake is by far the best player in that deal. If Mitch were worried about the depth he would have kept Manny.

But Lakers FO is cheap and tanking at the moment.

There is even very little promise for the future in this deal, although some have been high on Brooks.

I hate to see Blake leaving.

Lakers trade Steve Blake to Golden State Warriors

By Mike Bresnahan
February 19, 2014, 7:25 p.m.

The Lakers began their rebuilding process Wednesday, sending versatile veteran guard Steve Blake to Golden State, The Times has learned.

The Lakers received young, seldom-used shooting guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks in return for Blake. The deal saves the Lakers almost $1 million in salary the rest of the season and about $3 million in luxury taxes.

Blake seemed stunned by the trade, which was finalized a little more than an hour before the Lakers played the Houston Rockets at Staples Center. Blake was wearing his warmups when he was told he was traded.

"Real mixed emotions," he said after giving quick goodbyes to teammates, coaches and team personnel. "The hardest thing is for my family, really. I've got a wife and three little kids and now I'm going to have to spend four months probably away from them."

Blake, 33, averaged 9.5 points and 7.6 assists in his fourth season with the Lakers. He is making $4 million this season and becomes a free agent in July. He did not rule out returning to the Lakers next season.

"Absolutely. I've loved my time here," he said. "When you spend someplace this long, you start to get comfortable and we loved where we lived and loved the schools my kids were in, always loved the support of the fans and ownership.

Rockets roll past the Lakers, 134-108, in Dwight Howard's return

By Eric Pincus
February 19, 2014, 10:10 p.m.

Dwight Howard made his return to Staples Center on Wednesday night for the first time since leaving the Lakers as a free agent over the summer to join the Houston Rockets.

His new team completely destroyed the Lakers on Wednesday night, 134-108.

Howard, playing to a chorus of boos every time he touched the ball, finished with a double-double: 20 points and 13 rebounds. All-Star guard James Harden led all scorers with 29 points. He also dished 11 assists and committed only one turnover.

Houston dominated the boards, with a 56-32 advantage, especially on the offensive end where they outrebounded the Lakers, 19-3.

Forward Wesley Johnson led the Lakers with 24 points. Point guard Kendall Marshall put up big numbers again, with 20 points and 16 assists. The team shot 48.8% from the field and 51.9% from the three-point arc, but where they struggled most was on the defensive end.

Houston took a season-high 104 shots, making 52 (also a season high). The Rockets scored at least 30 points in every quarter while making 18-of-35 shots from three-point range (51.8%).

Guard Jodie Meeks returned from an ankle injury to score 19. Rookie forward Ryan Kelly chipped in 13 while Jordan Hill scored 10 against his former team.

Reports: Lakers fielding multiple offers for Jordan Hill
By Matt Moore | NBA writer
February 19, 2014 8:06 pm ET

Jordan Hill could be wearing a different-colored headband by Thursday. (USATSI)
In a sign of where we're at with the 2014 NBA Trade Deadline, the big name being thrown around is.... Lakers reserve big man Jordan Hill. Hill was drafted by the Knicks, but quickly fell out of favor with Mike D'Antoni and traded to Houston. This of course meant it got awkward when D'Antoni took over the team last year after Hill had been signed.

With the Lakers looking to cut into their massive luxury tax obligations, Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports that the price for the hustle junkie is low.

So let's run down the list of teams interested in Hill, according to reports. The Nets, as listed above, plus:

the Suns and Mavericks:

the Cavs:

and the Hawks;

Hill is thought of as a low-impact role player, but he plays extremely hard. Per 36 minutes, he's averaging 15.6 points and 12.9 rebounds on 54 percent shooting

I think its a great Trade, we need to get younger and more athletic this accomplishes that. Also how many of you would swoot on Blake saying he's garbage get rid of him etc? The dude is doing good in D-Tony system but once again none of you want him as a coach. So it Doesent matter. I think there was even fans threating his family.
