The white flag has been unrolled. It's about to be waved.

The Lakers traded versatile veteran guard Steve Blake to Golden State on Wednesday for young, seldom-used shooting guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks, a deal that saved the Lakers about $4 million in salary and luxury taxes in a season going nowhere.

The Lakers did not receive any draft picks while giving up a player in the midst of a career year. The trade deadline is Thursday at noon PST.

The Lakers might also part with forward-center Jordan Hill before the trade deadline.

Hill, 26, gets $3.5 million this season and will be a free agent in July. He is averaging 8.5 points and seven rebounds in only 19.5 minutes a game before Wednesday.

The Brooklyn Nets were well over the salary cap but could slide Hill into the $5.3-million injured-player exception they received from the NBA when Brook Lopez underwent season-ending foot injury last month. Yahoo! Sports first reported the Nets' interest in making a deal for Hill.

Blake seemed stunned, if not irritated, by the trade, which was finalized about an hour before the Lakers played the Houston Rockets at Staples Center. He was wearing his warmups when told he was traded.

Grade the Trade: Warriors acquire Steve Blake from the Lakers
By Zach Harper | NBA writer
February 20, 2014 2:06 am ET

The Golden State Warriors added some help to their bench Wednesday by trading two reserves to the Los Angeles Lakers for backup point guard Steve Blake. How much does it help them? We grade the trade for both sides.

Los Angeles Lakers acquire Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks

The Los Angeles Lakers didn't really need Steve Blake right now. On a team that is fighting for its playoff life and trying to make sure it keeps a steady hand on the floor at all times, Blake is a really valuable bench player. For an 18-36 team that is missing its Hall of Fame shooting guard and looking toward the NBA lottery, he's a starting guard for no reason. The Lakers didn't need him; they needed to keep cutting salary, and that's exactly what they did with this deal.

By moving Blake to the Warriors for Bazemore and Brooks, the Lakers shave a little over $2 million off their salary commitments this season. That means they start getting closer and closer back toward the luxury tax they've been over for years. The luxury tax in the NBA this season is set at $71.7 million and after making this trade, the Lakers are down to just over $77 million this season. They're expected to unload big man Jordan Hill before the trade deadline without having to take back any salary. If that's the case, the Lakers would then be down to $73.5 million, which is under the luxury tax apron.

Lakers trade guard Steve Blake to Warriors to save money

By Mark Medina, Los Angeles Daily News
POSTED: 02/20/14, 8:43 AM EST |
In what marked a step in their rebuilding process, the Lakers parted ways with a dependable point guard that coach Mike D’Antoni endlessly gushed over, for the sake of trimming salary.

The Lakers traded Steve Blake on Wednesday to the Golden State Warriors for two young seldom-used guards in Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks. The deal saves the Lakers about $2 million in both salary and luxury taxes.

The trade came unexpectedly, considering Blake warmed up before the Lakers hosted the Houston Rockets at Staples Center. He soon changed into street clothes and left the arena.

Blake, 33, was making $4 million in the final year of his contract and averaged 9.5 points and 7.6 assists. He appeared mostly tentative in his first two seasons with the Lakers under Phil Jackson and Mike Brown. But Blake thrived under D’Antoni’s system, including hitting a game-winner in November against Houston.

Brooks, 25, earns about $1.2 million this season and averaged just 2.6 points in 17 appearances for the Celtics and Warriors this season. Bazemore, 24, made about $750,000 this season, and averaged 2.3 points in 6.1 minutes per game over 44 appearances this season.

NBA trade deadline: Steve Blake goes to Warriors
BY CINDY BOREN
February 20 at 10:07 am

(Danny Moloshok / AP)

The Los Angeles Lakers have traded point guard Steve Blake to the Golden State Warriors for guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks in a move that comes ahead of the 3 p.m. EST Thursday trade deadline.
The Lakers, seemingly waving the white flag of surrender that can bring a top draft pick, moved Blake, who now joins a team headed for the playoffs. In return the Lakers get Brooks, who is on an expiring deal, and Bazemore, who will be an unrestricted free agent. More importantly, the Lakers cut about $3.5 million from their luxury tax bill with the trade.
The Lakers may not be done, with ESPN.com’s Ramona Shelburne reporting that Jordan Hill may be dealt, with the Brooklyn Nets, New Orleans Pelicans, Charlotte Bobcats, Dallas Mavericks Phoenix Suns and Atlanta Hawks expressing interest.

Breaking Down Everything LA Lakers Fans Need to Know About MarShon Brooks
By Adam Fromal , National NBA Featured Columnist Feb 20, 2014

MarShon Brooks is now on his fourth NBA team since being drafted in 2011, so it's understandable if Los Angeles Lakers fans are scrambling to figure out who this shooting guard is.

In less than a calendar year, Brooks has now been traded three times, as the Lakers officially announced the trade one day prior to the Feb. 20 deadline:

Pau Gasol remains with Lakers after NBA trade deadline

By Mike Bresnahan
February 20, 2014, 12:04 p.m.

Pau Gasol is still with the Lakers, somewhat miraculously surviving another NBA trade deadline.

The 33-year-old veteran was not dealt before Thursday's noon cut-off time, keeping him with the team until his contract expires after this season.

The Phoenix Suns wanted Gasol but he didn't necessarily want them, declining to say through his representatives that he would stay with them beyond the next few months. So Gasol becomes a free agent in July, where he won't get the $19.3 million he makes now but might still command decent money from the Lakers ... or someone else.

Gasol has been with the Lakers since February 2008 and thrown into numerous trade scenarios since the infamous vetoed trade involving Chris Paul in December 2011.

The Lakers' main move was trading Steve Blake on Wednesday to Golden State for young, seldom-used shooting guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks, a move that saved the Lakers about $4 million in salary and luxury taxes.

Blake, 33, was in the middle of a career year, averaging 9.5 points and 7.6 assists.

Bazemore, 24, and Brooks, 25, have combined to average 4.9 points and 0.7 assists this season.

All three players become free agents after this season.

The Lakers had discussions with a handful of teams for high-energy power forward Jordan Hill but nothing materialized. Hill, 26, is averaging 8.5 points and seven rebounds in only 19.6 minutes. He is a free agent in July.

NBA Trade Deadline: Andre Miller, Gary Neal Highlight Slow Day by Ben Watanabe on Thu, Feb 20, 2014 at 3:00PM Share this: Fancred 3:07 p.m.: Hooooooold everything. We have one last deal to announce, at it involves a championship contender barely squeaking through a trade before the horn. It is … It is … It is … the San Antonio Spurs sending Nando De Colo to the Toronto Raptors for Austin Daye! Well, then. OK, now we’re done. 3:02 p.m.: Sound the horn, the deadline has passed. An interesting, last-ditch deal that would have sent Iman Shumpert and Raymond Felton to the Los Angeles Clippers for Willie Green and Matt Barnes reportedly fell apart or never had much traction to begin with. Thus a rather uneventful deadline day passes without a major deal. The biggest name to change hands might be Jason Terry, if you count deals that happened last night. Andre Miller going to the Washington Wizards or Antawn Jamison going to the Atlanta Hawks might have been a big deal in 2006, but now they’re just nice deals to bolster teams that probably have unreasonably high playoff hopes. Danny Ainge and the Boston Celtics stood pat, which means Rajon Rondo, Jeff Green, Brandon Bass and Gerald Wallace are all sticking in green through the end of the season — for better or worse. 2:58 p.m.: With two minutes to go before the deadline, GMs are suddenly getting desperate. Maybe they got sidetracked by the USA-Canada hockey game, like the rest of us, and lost track of time.

To make matters worse, Ramona Shelbourn believes the Lakers won't keep their 1st round draft pick and will most likely use it in a trade after the draft. Noooo.

if gasol chooses to leave the lakers in free agency for another team this summer...the lakers should sign and trade and try to get something back

if the phx suns were able to get 2 first round and 2 second round for S&T for nash, then gasol should be able to get much more...but I highly doubt it.

Kobe Bryant 'not cool' with Steve Blake trade to Golden State

His teammates were generally shocked on Wednesday night when Steve Blake was traded to the Golden State Warriors less than two hours before tip-off against the Houston Rockets.

The Lakers made a money-saving deal, bringing in guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks from the Warriors.

On Thursday, one Laker spoke out against the trade.

Blake joined the Lakers in 2010, playing almost four seasons with the team.

In moving to the Warriors, the veteran guard jumped 14 games in the win column.

Bryant has been vocal through the years in favor of the Lakers keeping Pau Gasol.

At noon Thursday, the NBA trade deadline passed with Gasol still on the roster.

Kobe Bryant ‘not cool’ with Lakers trading Steve Blake

February 20, 2014 By Larry Brown Leave a Comment
The Lakers made it pretty clear that they are rebuilding and aiming for the best draft pick possible when they traded Steve Blake to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday for Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks.
Blake wasn’t with the Lakers long enough to really become a total fan favorite, but his departure didn’t sit well with Kobe Bryant, who tweeted the following on Thursday
