Who's the best Doctor-Companion combo from the new Doctor Who series?
1. Doctor (Chris Eccleston) and Rose Tyler (Billie Piper)
2. Doctor (David Tennant) and Rose Tyler
3. Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate)
4. Doctor (David Tennant) and Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman)
5. Doctor (Matt Smith) and Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill)
6. Doctor (Any) and River Song (Alex Kingston) - although not really a companion
7. Doctor (Chris Eccleston or David Tennant) and Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) - again, not really a companion, but someone in many episodes with the Doctor. _________________ MTFBWYA |

Rather than start a new topic will just bump this one. Never watched an episode of Dr. Who until the other day, so I'm not familiar with most of the names above. Karen Gillan (Amy) did a fine job during her run, she's going to be in a new Marvel flick coming out next year.
Thought the pairing of Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman (Clara) has been very good, watching this show is a guilty pleasure during the holidays. Too bad the Doctor will regenerate soon, so just when I've finally discovered this show, it will change drastically after Christmas. |

I refuse to vote since the best pair (Tom Baker and Sara Jane Smith) are not an option. |

I like Tennant just a bit more than Smith but I liked 11/Ponds more than Tennant and his companions. I'd say Doctor-Donna came close, Rose and Martha got a bit annoying the more their seasons wore on. |

I liked the Mary Tamm Romana better, but I like the rest of your picks.
For the new series, I thought Tennant-Noble was the pinnacle. Donna was unique among companions, and that's hard to achieve for such an old show. Catherine Tate's comic timing brought out the best in Tennant, but she also surprised everyone with a vulnerability and dramatic edge that you would never have expected from her clownish persona on British TV.
In my opinion, Eccleston/Rose > Tennant/Rose. The quasi-romantic spin didn't do much for me. However, that scene during the Donna Noble season when Donna hands her car keys to a blonde woman, and the blonde woman turns around and is revealed to be Rose . . . . wow, that just about knocked me off the sofa.
I liked Karen Gillan, but I really liked Arthur Darvill and Alex Kingston better. That was the first series of shows that I can remember since Hartnell where it felt like an ensemble cast.
I'm not sure what the Martha season was all about. Freema was perfectly fine in the role (even if she had died miserably in the season finale the years before, just as Karen Gillan died at Pompeii), but I never had the feeling that she was going to be a long term companion. I'm not sure what that was all about.
Finally, don't forget Wilf. He may have been the best of the best. |
