Kobe might sit out rest of preseason, says Byron Scott
by Janis Carr - ocregister.com

Kobe Bryant will sit out Monday’s exhibition game against Portland, his second consecutive preseason game and might not play again until the regular-season opener.

Coach Byron Scott hinted Sunday at the possibility of shutting down Bryant, who missed the Lakers’ abbreviated game Saturday in San Diego until the opener Oct. 28.

The Lakers star is nursing a lower leg contusion he suffered during a preseason game last week in Las Vegas. Bryant did light shooting drills Sunday, but left the court before reporters were allowed into practice.

Scott said he still is experiencing some soreness in his leg and is only jogging and shooting.

“To be honest with you, he probably won't play (Monday),” Scott said. “I'd rather get him close to 100 percent as possible. These games don't mean anything right now. It's really giving me a chance to look at these young guys anyway.”

Can LA Lakers’ Nick Young, Byron Scott ensure a strong relationship in the 2015-16 season?
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

For once, Nick Young did not want the attention.

“Leave me alone,” the Lakers forward playfully said.

Young rarely has met a television camera and tape recorder he does not like. The people who hold them have become entertained with his “Swaggy P” persona. But Young suddenly became guarded with his words, aware that he wants any focus he attracts during the Lakers’ 2015-16 season to remain positive.

“I’m not trying to be the center of the soap opera or the drama,” Young said.

He already experienced plenty of it.

Young saw himself “as the best thing smoking” in his first season as a Laker two years ago. That netted the former Reseda High and USC star a four-year, $21.5 million deal to stay in a favorite purple and gold uniform. But Young experienced what he called “the opposite” in the 2014-15 season, when he shot a career-worst 36.6 percent from the field and clashed frequently with Lakers coach Byron Scott.

Young then spent the offseason preparing for the Lakers to trade him.

“It was confusing. It was motivating,” Young said in an interview with Los Angeles News Group. “I didn’t know if I would be here.”

Analysis of Marcelo Huertas Lakers Debut
by Justin Haines - lakeshowlife.com

Marcelo Huertas made his debut for the Los Angeles Lakers in their shortened 85-70 win over the the Golden State Warriors. Playing for the entire second quarter he took over the game. Here’s a break down of all the good things he was able to do, with a few things for the 32 year old rookie to work.

Huertas opened the game with a beautiful runner that kissed off the glass. His first points in the NBA already have people making comparisons to legends. Isn’t preseason great!

He followed that runner up with another. This one filled the arena with that sweet swish sound. These were ultimately Huertas only four points of the game, but he showed plenty of promise in other areas.

The passes that Huertas threw around the court showed why the Lakers brought him to the NBA. He showed off everything fans could hope for, from crazy angle highlight passes, to cross court passes to open shooters, and some nice down low passes in tight spacing.

While certain Lakers bigs struggled to catch his quick passes down low (cough, Robert Sacre, cough) he managed six assists in twelve minutes off these plays, and he could have had a few more.

Larry Nance Jr. is already demolishing NBA defenders like his dad used to
by Hector Diaz - sbnation.com

Larry Nance Jr. just wants to make a name for himself as a rookie on the Los Angeles Lakers. But even though he wants to carve his own path to NBA superstardom, he's dunking like his dad did in dunk contests.

There are a few differences. Larry Jr. isn't going up against Dr. J, but more importantly HE'S DEMOLISHING PEOPLE BY DUNKING ON THEM.

My goodness. If this doesn't merit a wave of fans yearning for Nance to join the dunk contest this season, we don't know what will.

Lakers Vs. Trail Blazers Preview: L.A. Looks To Maintain Momentum
by Jabari A. Davis - lakersnation.com

At 2-3 on the preseason following their 85-70 win over the defending champion Golden State Warriors, the Los Angeles Lakers look to maintain some of the positive momentum against a new-look Portland Trail Blazers (3-2) team that has replaced four-fifths of last year’s starting lineup in tonight’s contest.

Their previous game may have been shortened due to extreme court conditions, but there were several positive developments that can now be built upon as they face an almost entirely revamped 2015-16 Blazers team. Kobe Bryant may still be out due to precautionary measures, but it appears his teammates could be rounding into form and learning how to play alongside one another.

Marcelo Huertas makes another strong point in Lakers' 104-102 victory over Portland
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

Quick query: Who is the Lakers' only true point guard?

Not Jordan Clarkson. He's a converted shooting guard.

Not D'Angelo Russell. Much more of a shooter than passer at Ohio State.

Lou Williams? Please. A shooting guard stuck in a point guard's body.

Marcelo Huertas will make the Lakers' final roster because he's their only pure point guard. He has never played an NBA regular-season game, declining millions of euros in salary to sign a $525,000 nonguaranteed contract with the Lakers, but he has already made a slew of smooth passes.

Huertas has 14 assists in 31 exhibition minutes and plenty of fans among teammates.

"Especially shooters," Coach Byron Scott said Monday. "They love to play with guys that pass. He's obviously strictly a throwback-type point guard where he's thinking about setting up his teammates before he ever thinks about scoring."

Lakers escape with 104-102 win over Trail Blazers: Game rewind
by Joe Freeman - oregonlive.com

Another day, another wild and entertaining exhibition outing for the Trail Blazers.

After charging back from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to tie the game in the closing seconds, the Blazers nearly forced overtime for the second night in a row. But unlike Sunday, when they overcame a 21-point deficit to beat the Utah Jazz, the Blazers didn't quite have enough magic to steal a victory on Monday.

Ryan Kelly's soaring dunk in the waning moments delivered the Los Angeles Lakers a dramatic 104-102 victory over the Blazers at the Staples Center.

Ryan Kelly dunk lifts Kobe-less Lakers over Trail Blazers in preseason game
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

Overtime would have at least represented a reasonable make-up effort for ending the last game after just three quarters.

But Ryan Kelly would have none of it.

With 4.8 seconds remaining against the Portland Trail Blazers and the teams tied, Kelly took an inbounds pass, paused, faked a handoff to Jabari Brown, turned to the basket and saw a clear path to the hoop.

He drove and threw down a left-handed dunk with two seconds remaining that gave the Lakers a 104-102 victory.

“I didn’t figure they would give him the lane that open,” Lakers coach Byron Scott said. “He did a great job of reading it.”

The Lakers have won consecutive preseason games – Saturday’s 85-70 victory over Golden State by default, after the game in San Diego was called off due to a wet court – without Kobe Bryant.

The 37-year-old star continued to rest his bruised leg, a precaution more than anything with the regular season eight days away.

Kelly’s dunk might have stolen the show, but it was a play that probably shouldn’t have been needed.

5 things learned from Lakers 104-102 win over Portland Trail Blazers
by Bob Garcia IV - sportsoutwest.com

With Kobe Bryant out for a second consecutive game, the Los Angeles Lakers outlasted the Portland Trail Blazers behind late game heroics from Ryan Kelly in a 104-102 win.

Despite a balanced offensive effort by the Trail Blazers, Los Angeles kept it close throughout. The Lakers pulled ahead in the fourth quarter behind a strong effort by their bench led by Jabari Brown and Marcelo Huertas.

However, Portland erased a nine-point lead in the final 90 seconds after a three-pointer by Pat Connaughton tied the game at 102 with just 4.8 seconds left in the game. Kelly answered the bell for Los Angeles with a ball fake on a pass that gave him an open lane to the rim and dunked on Noah Vonleh for game-winning bucket with 2.0 seconds remaining.

Jordan Clarkson led Los Angeles with 17 points. Marcelo Huertas had a solid performance with eight points and eight assists, and Nick Young scored 12 points.

There were plenty of positives to take away from the victory, here are five things we learned on Monday night:

Being Jim Buss
by Sam Amick - usatoday.com

After all these years of scrutiny, Jim Buss has finally found his sanctuary.

Not only is he island-bound in Oahu with Los Angeles Lakers loyalists for the first time in eight years, but here on this night when Kobe Bryant’s latest comeback was finally complete, the team's part-owner and executive vice president of basketball operations has found his way to the most apropos of restaurants: the Kobe steakhouse in downtown Waikiki. Buss is tucked away in the corner, the trademark baseball cap on his head and a welcoming smile on his face.

There are no malicious types here. No screaming pundits, know-it-all writers or unappreciative Laker greats (more on that later). Just good food (steak, chicken, and sushi galore), a curious reporter (yours truly) and a dear friend whose presence offers a reminder of some of the subplots that brought us to this complicated point: Chaz Osborne.

Of all the Lakers storylines that have made fans and media scratch their heads, the revelation that Jim had employed one of his old horse racing pals as a team scout seemed to cause as much of a ruckus as all the rest. It’s the kind of thing that gets overlooked when a franchise is winning titles, but becomes meat for the wolves when times are tough. The public reaction has to this subplot, and many, many more during these torturous past two seasons, have left Jim with the reputation of a 55-year-old man who is overmatched by his lot in this basketball life.

This is the harsh reality that we discussed in a more casual setting three months before in Las Vegas, when a late-night chat during NBA summer league included Buss wondering why he has become a punching bag for so many and why - as he sees it - he's so grossly misunderstood. He recoiled then at the mention of how people are generally averse to a nepotistic rise, noting that he’d been working diligently for the Lakers in the front office for nearly 15 years before his father, Dr. Jerry Buss, died in Feb. 2013. The conversation commenced here in this serene setting, where the Lakers’ resident mystery man made this much clear: he is waving the white flag on the war over his image.

Jim Buss fires back at Magic Johnson's criticism
by usatoday.com

The Los Angeles Lakers have been anything but successful in the past two seasons. They haven't come close to the playoffs with a record of 48-116. They've had injuries to key players, but mostly have just been devoid of talent.

The man taking the heat for most of the team's problems is Jim Buss, the executive vice president of basketball operations.

Possibly his biggest critic is Magic Johnson, who led the Lakers to five NBA championships in the 1980s.

Johnson blasted Buss over the hiring of Mike D'Antoni in 2012 instead of former coach Phil Jackson. He went on several TV and radio shows ripping Buss, saying he wouldn't be able to bring the Lakers back to relevance.

"Magic Johnson going nuts on me?" Buss said with a laugh. "It’s like, ‘Really, dude? My dad made you a billionaire almost. Really? Where are you coming from?' "

Byron Scott measuring Kobe Bryant’s recovery, roster cuts
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

Byron Scott stood on the sideline, observing the action with an endless checklist of things to evaluate. The result of the Lakers’ 104-102 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday at Staples Center did not matter.

Instead, the Lakers’ coach considered other things besides the result. Or Jordan Clarkson (17 points), Nick Young (12) and D’Angelo Russell (12) leading the team in scoring. Or Ryan Kelly throwing down a vicious one-handed dunk that secured the win with two seconds left.

Kobe Bryant and Lou Williams sat for the second consecutive exhibition game because of soreness in their lower left leg and groin, respectively. But all the attention obviously centers on Bryant, who is set to enter his 20th and perhaps final NBA season.

Bryant plans to run on Tuesday after missing the past two exhibitions and four practices since bruising his lower left leg in the Lakers’ preseason loss last Tuesday against Sacramento in Las Vegas. Will Bryant recover enough to play in the Lakers’ preseason finale against Golden State in Anaheim on Thursday?

“He wants to play,” Scott said. “But we’ll see how he feels Thursday. If he’s 100 percent, we’ll go from there. If he doesn’t, we’ll wait until next Wednesday.”

Lakers Waive Frazier II and Upshaw
Posted: Oct 20, 2015

EL SEGUNDO – The Los Angeles Lakers have waived guard Michael Frazier II and center Robert Upshaw, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

Frazier II, an undrafted rookie from Florida, was originally signed by the Lakers on August 25. He appeared in four preseason games for Los Angeles, averaging 2.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 0.8 assists in 13.5 minutes per game.

Upshaw saw action in four of the Lakers’ seven preseason contests, averaging 2.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 0.75 blocks in 14.1 minutes per game. The undrafted rookie out of Washington was originally signed on September 14.

The Lakers roster (attached) now stands at 17.

Roy Hibbert at center of efforts to improve Lakers' chemistry
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

It was not unlike the fast breaks they had practiced. Jordan Clarkson filled the lane to one side and Jabari Brown sprinted along the other edge.

In the middle of the chaos operated the rookie, D’Angelo Russell.

They closed in on the goal, but there would be no layup or corner 3-pointer. The target hid behind a short concrete barrier. Clarkson and Brown approached Lakers video coordinator J.J. Outlaw from the sides, and Russell stunned Outlaw by leaping over the barrier. Orange starbursts spattered on Outlaw’s clothing.

“Stop shooting! Stop shooting!” Clarkson said Outlaw yelled, laughing at the memory.

The Lakers spent that day, about a week before training camp, on a paintball course near Long Beach. The field trip helps explain the early chemistry of this Lakers team.

“These guys get along extremely well,” Coach Byron Scott said. “They like each other, they push each other, and it doesn’t happen that often when you have this many new people, this early.”

Eleven of the 19 players the Lakers brought to training camp were not on the team last season. The player who is getting much of the credit for the fast-assembled group’s immediate cohesion might come as a bit of a surprise.

He’s a newcomer, too.

Lakers cut rookie center Robert Upshaw, keep veteran Robert Sacre
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

The Lakers' first cut of the preseason was a mild surprise, with the team saying goodbye to Robert Upshaw on Tuesday and keeping Robert Sacre as their No. 3 center.

Upshaw had tantalizing ability as a shot-blocker but the undrafted rookie had trouble grasping the offense.

It didn't help Upshaw that his contract is nonguaranteed while Sacre's is fully guaranteed at just under $1 million.

Sacre hasn't developed much on offense, but the Lakers like his jovial locker room presence and are satisfied with his defense.

Lakers on hook for Jonathan Holmes' salary while he's injured
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

Rookie forward Jonathan Holmes dislocated his right shoulder Monday night in the Lakers' 104-102 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, playing just over a minute before suffering the injury.

Long-time Lakers trainer Gary Vitti tended to Holmes on the court, reseating the joint.

The Texas forward's shoulder will be immobilized for the next couple of weeks, according to a team spokesman.

Holmes is signed to a two-year, $1.4-million minimum contract, but only $100,000 of his $525,093 rookie season is guaranteed.

Under NBA rules, the Lakers will be responsible for Holmes' salary until his injury is fully healed.

His partial guarantee should cover a month's worth of games (15 or 16). His $100,000 promise will go against the team's salary cap, along with any additional charges if Holmes' recovery time proves lengthy.

Byron Scott Explains Lakers Decision To Cut Robert Upshaw
by Serena Winters - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers announced two roster cuts on Tuesday morning, waiving center Robert Upshaw and guard Michael Frazier II, bringing their roster to 17 players. Head coach Byron Scott said that both decisions were based on experience. Specifically with Robert Upshaw, though the Lakers saw “flashes” of what he could do, ultimately, there was a “big time learning curve on both ends of the floor.”

If things fall in the Lakers favor, the hope is for both Upshaw and Frazier II to clear waivers and for the Lakers to sign both to their D-League team, the Los Angeles D-Fenders. Scott specifically mentioned that they’d like to keep their eyes on Upshaw, should he find himself on the D-Fenders.

Regarding Upshaw’s off-the-court issues that had him dismissed from two college programs, Scott suggested they will likely be a concern for several NBA teams, until Upshaw proves otherwise.

“He’s going to have that stigma with him for awhile, until he can kind of erase it, and that’s probably going to be one of his biggest problems to deal with,” Scott said, while also mentioning that team camaraderie factored into the Lakers decision.
