Chemistry... With the Warriors claiming their rings and beginning their title defense, the Lakers began their regular season…ready or not. Just two Lakers remain from their championship season. The Warriors have consistency and continuity, while the Lakers are trying to build that again.

The champs have a smoothness in everything they do. The Lakers move like they badly need some WD-40. You can almost hear the squeaks and groans of their halfcourt offense.

The schedule is tough for L.A. to open this season, so as they try to get some momentum and fluidity, they will take plenty of lumps.

The Lakers fell behind 19-10 early. They rallied back to tie it up behind AD’s strong play on both ends and a 14-2 points-in-the-paint advantage. They’d trail 25-23 after the first.

“To only give up 6 points in last 5:40 of a quarter is great,” Ham said.

The poor shooting, however, was once again on display as the Lakers started off 2-20 from three. They’ve had a couple of atrocious stretches of shooting, and it’s a roster construction issue that they will have to try to deal with. They trailed by 7 at halftime.

The Warriors pounced in the first five minutes of the second half, turning Laker offensive miscues into easy buckets. The Lakers called a timeout, but the lead quickly grew to 20+ on a 25-4 run that lasted nearly 9 minutes.

The Lakers trimmed it to 16 in the fourth during a 13-2 run. They’d cut it down lower as they turned offense to defense and the pace picked up.

The champs are the champs for a reason, though. They just had too much firepower and experience together, while the Lakers are putting in new systems and new players. The Lakers fell 123-109.

“Chemistry is not like Malt-O-Meal, you don’t just throw it in the microwave,” Ham said.

LeBron -- -- LBJ officially begins his 20th season and the countdown to breaking Kareem’s scoring record. Offensively, there was no spacing for him early. With Westbrook, it’s hard enough, but through in JTA and Gabriel for a stretch and it’s straight up packed. No lanes to drive. So don’t tell me he’s looking old or anything like that when he’s got multiple defenders to deal with. Look at what’s behind LeBron’s initial defender and what he’s seeing. He had to pull up on one drive because Green plugged a gap and Reggie Miller gave credit to the primary defender. No. Look at what’s happening behind the primary defender. When LeBron doesn’t see help, he’s just a bully. On the occasion, we could get him downhill early on, he just muscled guys. On the break, he was a beast. We just struggle to get him room with the makeup of this team. LeBron had 3 points in that first quarter…and he still ended up with 30+. He was helping the team come back in the fourth, but Bron had a bad turnover on a breakaway where he threw the ball away trying to get it to AD as we could have cut the lead to 11. The Warriors hit a three on the other end. That one hurt, and seemed to kill momentum. In the half court, LeBron is going to need some shooting around him, though. It’s going to be a challenge from game to game, especially against the smarter/better coached teams. Defensively, he started on Looney. When he had JaMychal Green on him, he got burned sagging off for some perimeter shooting. Good job on the glass. We have to have that when he’s at the PF. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 12-25 shooting (3-10 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 14 boards, 8 assists, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -9.

Davis -- -- Well, I like the overall effort he’s been playing with so far this season. Defensively, he got Draymond to start. This allows him to roam the paint and give up open threes to Green if he wants in exchange for plugging the paint. His ability to cover ground defensively, however, was seen more in transition in the first half. He got after a couple of passes at midcourt. On one, he swiped it, took the ball off the dribble and scored an And-1 layup (his last dribble was at the three line). The counter to someone sagging in the paint is to use the man he’s defending as a screener and get quick hits off flares or DHOs. The Warriors went after that some and it put our guards in a tough spot. With AD, you’ve got a big advantage to switch with him, but we aren’t making that happen. Not thrilled with how was worked that defensively tonight, and AD ended up a team-low -21. Offensively, the Lakers got the ball to him in the post a bit. We saw that in preseason. He can bully most guys on that roster if you want. So, he was effective on the interior. On the perimeter, you want to be careful about the early offense threes. He was 0-3 in the first half and a couple of those, he didn’t need to take. By the way, if you are thinking about Green leaving the Warriors for the Lakers think about how poor the floor spacing would be when you try to play both of those guys together. It’s not a good fit on that end. (Defensively, would be strong). It felt like the Warriors got away with a little extra contact and grabbing against him and LeBron. But our stars just need a bit more support around them to be more effective. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 10-22 shooting (0-3 from three, 7-9 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 steals, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 2 foul sin 36 minutes. He was a -21.

Westbrook -- -- “We played a little too slow in my opinion, but you know,” Russ said of the Lakers poor third quarter. The halfcourt, slow-down is tough for him and us to be successful. When you watch Westbrook on the court, you can’t judge his impact only by when he has the ball. Take a look at the lack of gaps LeBron had to drive early in the first half when the team can’t get floor spacing for him. This halfcourt offense is designed to have double gaps, yet the paint is so jammed up it becomes a problem. So where these guys can look good together is when they are pushing pace and getting downhill. They struggled a little early on to get the motor going, but once they did, both had some good possession. (For some reason, after one of Russ’s best plays of the half, a coast-to-coast score, he picked up a tech by swatting the ball away from the inbounder for some reason…TNT announcers who had been praising his stat ability were laughing.) Russ had 11 points, 3 assists and 6 boards in the first half. His rebounding was especially strong at times early on as he was back there battling with bigger rebounders. In the fourth, he had a highlight oop jam as the Lakers turned defense into offense and threw it up for him. As far as the injury goes, he looked as explosive as usual. By the way, Westbrook had another corner turnover where he stepped on the line pushing off. Keep an eye on that this season with some of our use of him out of corners. The Lakers had several sideline step-outs as a team tonight. Overall, I thought it was a reasonable game by him and I see the intention out there. Love that finish on the oop in transition in the fourth and hope we see more of that by the team. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 7-12 shooting (1-3 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a -6.

Walker IV -- -- He seemed to get a little more comfortable as the game went along. But again, we knew we needed shooting this offseason and he is very streaky from three. Some nice playmaking at times. He had a baseline drive in the first half that setup AD for a dunk. He also had a pushout and fed LeBron. Keep your stars happy and scoring and you might end up playing a lot of minutes with them. Late in the game, he had a turnover where he lost the handle trying to play with speed and mentioned that after the game that maybe he needed to slow down a little more there. We’ve got so many guys that need to get downhill, that this team is going to want to push pace a lot. Walker is one of those guys. Defensively, his athleticism is nice to see and he’s giving a good effort on that end. Again, this Warriors team is a tough cover when they know exactly how to kill you and you are still figuring out what you are as a team. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-7 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnover sand no fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -13.

Beverley -- -- He was a -8 in 9 first half minutes with 3 fouls and a few poor shot selection plays. He picked up his 4th foul just 12 seconds into the third and sat for Nunn. Just a tough run there for him. Reaves came in early for Beverley after the start of the first quarter (Pat missed two threes and fouled Thompson on a three). He’d foul another three shooter later. His only make was a corner three on an inside-out swing sequence. It felt like he got into a better groove late in the game, but tough one for Pat Bev. He’s also lucky Stu wasn’t doing this game because he did not square up on an inbounds pass under the hoop and let the Warriors get a layup. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-5 shooting from three to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -5.

Nunn -- -- While he had a poor -19 out there, he did give the Lakers one of their only consistent three shooters, making 3-6 from beyond the arc. He came in midway through the first quarter for Westbrook. That may be the rotation as we get Nunn in early and Westbrook out early so he can get more run without LeBron on the floor. It’s also kind of key with Schröder now out for a while. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-9 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers an 2 foul sin 23 minutes. He was a -19.

Reaves -- -- Not a good game from Reaves. His role and whom he is playing with has varied so much early on this season. He’s got to hit that three ball. We’re desperately seeking shooters. Defensively, he got backdoored twice in a row by Steph. I’m not going to get mad at anyone getting killed by Steph. That’s just the way it is, but that was probably a teaching moment for Reaves right there. Reaves got his only bucket on the break as he scored an And-1 layup. He also had a nice ball-fake and kick to Nunn for an open three for his only assist. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 assist and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -6.

Toscano-Anderson -- -- Congrats. He took home a ring tonight, then battled against his former team again. While there is an advantage with JTA knowing the Warriors schemes and being disruptive defensively, the Warriors also know JTA’s strengths/weaknesses. He was 0-3 from three as the Warriors really didn’t care if he shot from three. Another guy who is kind of streaky from three. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting from three to go with 4 boards, 2 turnovers and 1 foul ion 14 minutes. He was a -1.

Ryan -- -- Obviously, the Lakers need guys like him on the roster. But beyond just the shooting, their schemes have a ton of DHOs and movement off screens. Ryan came in during the second quarter and drilled a wing three set up out of the timeout. The tricky part is keeping him on the floor. The Warriors went at him a few times early on. On one, he challenged Klay well in the paint and we got the stop. On the other, he gave up FTs to Curry on a guard-to-guard screen. You have to pick your spots with him, but the more games you have like this where we aren’t a threat from three early, the earlier we may see Ryan. Team held serve while he was out there. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +1.

Gabriel -- -- With the team signing Ryan, that means roster space is no longer available for Huff. Gabriel fills in at the center spot with Jones in our bigman depth charts. He picked up two fouls in the first quarter on the offensive glass to give up freethrows the other way, then sat for AD. I thought Bryant outplayed Jones in the preseason, but hard to really say Gabriel outplayed Jones. This matchup is just better for Gabriel because he’s mobile. With Bryant out, Jones/Gabriel get pushed higher in the rotation. It’s entirely possible we play Jones and no Gabriel in other games. Good energy from Gabriel, just needed to be more careful. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 1 offensive board, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a +0.

Swider -- -- He came in for the last couple of minutes and got tapped on a three. His other fellow rookies got their first official NBA stats. The Stats: The Action: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board and 1 assist in 2 minutes. He was a +3.

Pippen -- -- He attacked in early offense with 45 seconds left in the game to draw FTs and score his first official NBA points. The Stats: The Action: He scored 2 points on 2-2 shooting from three in 2 minutes. He was a +3.

Christie -- -- He drilled a three with 20 seconds left on his first official NBA attempt and knocked it down. There you go, rook. The Stats: The Action: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board in 2 minutes. He was a +3.

Ham -- -- Key Moment: In the preseason, we saw some broad strokes of Ham’s first run as a head coach. We could see certain sets and lineup combinations. We could see the general defensive schemes. But with the regular season here and the games counting, we can see more of the detail in his coaching ability. Certainly, he’s still feeling out this roster and is already dealing with injuries. Defensively, I was hoping we’d keep a little continuity from last season since we’ve still got Handy on staff, but we’re overhauling that, as well. Not thrilled about that, especially against this Warriors team where it felt like that cost them a little. So, the Lakers have an uphill battle. Hard to pick a single moment that the game turned on or was decided by, but that run in the third by the Warriors was killer. I do like how the speed picked up in the fourth quarter and the Lakers were able to consistently push tempo. I think that will be a takeaway for the team. Turn defense into offense.

Key Substitution: Let’s go with how he subbed LeBron and Russ. One of the two was usually on the court. Russ came out early in the first and third, so Ham could bring back Russ later while LeBron rested. If you are not bringing Russ off the bench (which I don’t think will happen), basically, this is how you handle that. Who finishes tight games is another question.

Key Stats: From game one in the preseason, we focused on the shooting. This roster is going to have its challenges. There was a stretch where they were like 1-16, then 2-20 from three. That just makes it so much tougher on your strengths. The Warriors can take those strengths away and allow guys to fire away if from deep if they want. Not much you can do but hit shots and play D sometimes. The Lakers finished 10-40 from three. The 8-20 the rest of the way was respectable, but if teams are squeezing you elsewhere, then those looks will get easier as the game goes on. The Lakers had 22 turnovers, as well. Got to clean that up.

Coach’s Challenge: The Warriors challenged a Westbrook drive for a foul with 47 seconds left in the first quarter. Russ attacked, spun and fell up against a couple defenders. Successful challenge as Russ slipped on the spin. Warriors got the ball due to imminent possession. In the third quarter, Ham used his challenge on a LeBron drive where they called him for a charge (LeBron was bullying his way to the hoop using his arms while both hands were on the ball). Challenge successful to save LeBron a foul and regain possession.

Thanks DB

Keep the picks and punt.

This team has too many issues to make a serious run. A hield/turner trade won't single-handedly cover them up to where the lakers can win a championship this year.

Honestly, I got the impression that if we shot somewhat well from downtown, we would've had a real shot at winning.

There were stretches of good defense, and we did a good job at times of contesting and rotating. When we got stops, we ran, and our fast break was good tonight. Our defensive rebounding also looks improved.

I still think we're one or two wing or frontcourt role players away from being legit. I also don't like the idea of starting AD at the 5 long-term (why didn't Damian Jones play tonight?).

That will happen in some games, but unfortunately, we will be shooting badly in a lot of games. We just don’t have the shooters.

Yes, totally agreed. But other than staying healthy, that may be our only real problem.

An intellegent trade by the deadline could fix that enough, and hopefully by then we're in the top 4-6 of the West.

Unfortunately, im not buying into their excuses. The team is just a repackaged version of last years team with the same general issues. The biggest is russ, followed by lack of reliable 3 shooters. I mean the pscking the paint thing is what happened last year, will happen again. I suppose we added some younger legs for defense.

Real shame the tail end of lbjs career is wasted playing with russ (even if lbj was the one driving that trade). That single trade dramatically changed so many things imo, for the worse.

After holding the Warriors to "only" 25 in the first quarter, we proceeded to give up 34, 32, and 32 in the remaining three. Bryant would've helped in the paint, but the Laker perimeter defense was not consistently strong in this first game of the new season.

As for positives, I was impressed with AD's improved focus on scoring down low, and WB's general restraint from shooting terrible outside jumpers.

It's the same root issue as before, though. If you play a big in the middle and use AD as a wing/4, sure you have more paint protection, but you also lose the offense spacing and freedom with Westbrook/AD/Lebron.

The paint gets clogged up a lot more and there's just not a good enough motion and fast enough movement in the offense.

The irony is that the players they've put next to WB/Bron/AD with AD being a 5, are not exactly proven great floor spacers.

This game seemed to indicate the Warriors starting 5/core is levels above the Lakers top 5, which we probably already knew.

Seems like we did all right in the first half, but then second half Warriors picked up their defense and we also became TO prone. Once that happened, it was game over and Warriors went up 20+.

Continues to be a thing to be concerned about - AD, Bron, WB are all TO guys. Between them 12 TOs alone, with 11 assists. 7 TOs between the Warriors big 3 with 15 assists.

That's the thing with our big 3 and why it hasn't ever worked. Not only does it force AD to play at the 5 to have spacing for Bron/WB, when you have 3 high usage users as your top 3 the TOs begin to add up. They don't move the ball or share it in an effective way and then their mantra this season according to AD will be to just go more 1 on 1 and not worry about each other. That's fine individually and will work some nights, but against a good defense that's not a good plan, IMO.

I do think we will more games this year, especially if AD/Bron stay healthier than last. But overall, seems we've got the same root issues between the big 3/the way roster is contructed and without Melo/Monk, arguably our shooting may have gotten even worse.

I really hope that Pelinka is proving to Jeanie that they need to trade the picks by allowing the team to stumble out of the gates and then pull off a trade once all of the new contracts become tradeable in December.

Otherwise, yet another wasted season is in the works.

Having a losing team is a lot harder to bear in the age of social media. All I ask is that we're not the drama riddled clown show that we were last year.

We lost to the champs in their arena, it is what it is.

If we keep starting Lonnie Walker with Beverley and Westbrook, it's going to be a problem. Walker provides no spacing in the half court offense. The Warriors just seemed to ignore him on the perimeter. On defense, Walker seemed more frantic than effective. It can be hard to tell the difference from a TV broadcast.

In general, our good players were good, and our mediocre players were mediocre. We'll see nights when the role players get hot from three, and we'll win some games that way. We're likely to see a lot more games just like this.

Thanks, DB.

It's simple. The team isn't good enough and just by looking at the roster you know why. I can't see us being better than .500.

We have no size and no shooting, two of the most important aspects of today's basketball game. That's not a recipe for winning.

Also the lack of cohesion is evident. That's what happens when you change 90% of the roster every year.
The rotations are still very bad, but I'm willing to give Ham a break here.

The Westbrook trade will really haunt us for another year. Hopefully the last. Imagine if we still had KCP and Kuzma. Instantly a better team.

The Warriors have about a dozen really good players so can get away playing their main guys about 20-25 minutes a night. Steph is the only one who played over 30 mins while their younger guys Poole and Wiggins played 28 and 29.

Lakers have no depth and maybe 2 1/2 guys on their roster that are starter level. AD and Lebron played more minutes than anyone on the Warrior roster (35). If Pelinka doesn't get them some help soon one of them is going to get injured.

Sir Charles says that this Laker roster is just a younger version of last year’s team with the same warts. Hopefully this team doesn’t act like they can turn on the switch “when it counts” because they were all (ancient) veterans who realized that they should be on social security (most/if not all of last year’s veterans are not on any NBA rosters)

Good thing about playing good to very good teams at the start of the season is that the faults are clear and indisputable.

Cohesion is lacking, as all teams are with a major turnover of players. We will see how committed the players are to Ham’s plans

Pop has shown in San Antonio that a very good team doesn’t need better talent overall than their opposition if they are all on the same page

Nunn, Walker and JTA were valuable members of well-coached teams and can be part of an invaluable support to the Big 3 and **hope** they can shoot much better

When PatBev quickly got into foul trouble and DS is not available, the D suffered greatly

It has been said that great players make their supporting cast better, let’s hope that we will start seeing this in the next 4-5 games, as what Big Game James shared

^ yeah I didn't know how realistic I felt BGJames was being in his expectations that he wanted to see cohesion in the next 4-5 games. Lol

Buuuuuut anyway we shall see.

we should beat average and weak teams and hope to be competitive with others. I love these write up but there is no way you can be happy with Ad's effort.

He started strong then disappeared until the late 3rd when it became garbage time.

Nunn is the guy.

Well, I for one don't want WB on the team. While he's here, I especially don't want him on the court for major minutes at the same time as Lebron and AD, a point I've advocated since pre-season last year.

Also, the Lakers scored 109 points last night despite the lack of 3P% efficiency. When we won the championship we were bad at 3P% in the playoffs compared to the other teams, but the defense was outstanding (driven in part by our large size in the front court). I hope a trade in the very near future addresses our lack of large, defensive forwards.

At a total of 40, yesterday we took faaaaar too many treys... ten by Lebron alone! Just because the Warriors intentionally let you do it does not mean you shoukd.

We scored 109 because with a few minutes left in the 3rd it was officially garbage time. GSW is elite defensively and you saw Kerr’s face when he brought steph back in. We certainly need help with 3’s but this game had nothing to do with us.

Thanks DB. That was a rough one to watch all the way through.

Same as last year. Lost the turnover battle, got outshot from 3 point land. We won points in the paint but GSW is a small team and we still got outrebounded. Bigger teams are going to punish us in the paint.

Hopefully I am wrong.

My comment was more his effort so far this season, which includes the preseason games we saw him in. When you take notes for a game and you are doing stretches of notes that are one after another with just a single player making multiple, consecutive impact plays, that's pretty impressive. He had a couple stretches like that last night. LeBron had one of those in the preseason. AD had another previously.

I don't think the defensive schemes play to his strength against a team like this and may look like he's standing a bit, but he's trying to get used to what they want there. But overall from the preseason games to this one, he's been giving some very strong stretches of impact ball. When his wind gets better, hopefully that carries out to longer minutes.
