The D is M.I.A., and So is Half the Team... Good news is you scored your season high in the first half despite no LeBron, Walker, Beverley, Schröder and Bryant. Bad news is you gave up your season high defensively in the first half.

Like the last game against the Jazz, the Lakers did not defend in the first quarter. When AD went to the bench with his second foul in the quarter at the 3:34 mark, the Jazz scored 18 points to close the quarter (8-12 overall from three in the quarter).

The Lakers fell back by double digits, but started turning defense into offense. They would cut the lead back to 1.

A 5-point switch with a minute left seemed to be the difference in the first half. Russ lost control of what looked like a sure dunk and that led to an And-1 score the other way. That was the difference as the Lakers trailed 76-71 at the half. Just look at that score. Ponder it. I’ll wait.

The only identity this team has is that we lose in different ways. And that we lose big in the third quarters.

It would take just 2 minutes into the second half before we called a timeout (some really soft D by AD as he hung out in drop coverage and got caught in no man’s land too often). Ham would bench Russ for his D in the third quarter, and the Lakers trailed by 17 heading into the fourth.

Just another day at the office for the Lakers.

They would fall 139-116.

Davis -- -- I didn’t really understand why AD didn’t just go after the bigs relentlessly in the last game against the Jazz. Tonight, with LeBron out, he just went after them. Markkanen just got destroyed in the first half as AD went at him for 19 points on 9-12 shooting. Quick first steps to his left for layups or dunks, attacks right into his jumphook. He’d throw in a jumper. He’d get 14 of his 19 in the paint. But we’ve been here before. Can we build on that in the second half? With LeBron out, there should be plenty of offense run through AD. Defensively, he picked up his second foul with 3:34 in the first quarter, the Lakers up 2. That put him on the bench and we gave up 18 points to close the quarter in that short stint. He was noticeably careful in the second quarter and managed to avoid that third foul. In the third, he needed to pick up his D but came out very soft. Many of the Jazz scores were with AD playing way too careful and Utah taking advantage. So instead of the lack of offense in the second half, this was the defensive equivalent. If we don’t trade for Turner, he would be a good big around AD since he spaces the floor on one end, but would allow AD to not have to anchor the D. AD talked about it a little bit afterward with having McGee or Howard behind him, he’d often roam on the weakside of the D and cause problems. He covers so much ground defensively, that’s really what we miss. But he needs a big who is a floor spacer so he can work in the paint offensively like he did tonight. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 11-18 shooting (1-1 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -9.

Reaves -- -- Super efficient first half with 9 points on 1-2 shooting. He’d get to the line a ton attacking in transition. In the second half, he’d score just 2 points and the D that was there, was mostly MIA. He had a lazy matchup on THT in transition. THT got on a runway and hammered on Jones. That was Reaves’ fault. That might have been a little bit of tiredness from Reaves, but that kind of symbolized the game as THT is dunking on us and JC is shelling us from the perimeter. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 2-6 shooting (0-3 from three, 7-7 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -14.

Brown -- -- He had 10 points on 4-5 shooting in the first half. My favorite play might have been a crossover to break his defender badly, then he hit AD rolling for a dunk. He knocked down a couple of threes. I like him in our starting lineup. Wish he would have had a second half like the first, but that’s the rub with minimum contract role players. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 4 foul sin 25 minutes. He was a -9.

Nunn -- -- On the good side, he got some shots to drop. Nice to see him get on track for once. Maybe he can build on that. Just getting any kind of positive for him would help a ton. He seemed to find his shot and pick spots on when to attack. He had an assist to start the game to AD, then that was it for the playmaking. His lack of size defensively becomes problematic when you have a team you really need to switch against. He wasn’t stopping anyone. I think he had one play where he had a good challenge on iso D, but when there was any kind of navigating screens or forced to help, forget about it. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-11 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 assist and 3 turnovers in 18 minutes. He was a -11.

Gabriel -- -- In the third quarter, he had a hustle play on the offensive boards where he just battled around the Jazz bigman, grabbed the board and then dunked on him. That kind of play needs to be his specialty. Outwork guys. Defensively, annoying play at the end of the third quarter, leaving the strong side corner shooter to give up an open three. That he is starting maybe says it all for this game and this team. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -9.

Westbrook -- -- Off the bench despite LeBron being gone, Westbrook would drop 18 points on 6-9 shooting in the first half. He’d swish a couple of threes. He got downhill off an AD screen and hammered. Several finishes where he either attacked the chest of bigs or exploded in his last couple steps for layups. Very good work around the rim. When AD would go to work in the post, we’d often put Westbrook in the dunker spot opposite. That would help limit the opposing defender from helping. Some awful D in the second half, including one Markkanen coast-to-coast drive he gave up. You’ve got to make him pick up the dribble or take the charge, Russ just backed up and let him go around him like Magic Johnson for a layup. After a three over Russ closing out a late just a play later, we called timeout and Russ sat for a bit. Not sure if that was a coincidence but that’s what happened. Russ didn’t return in the third quarter, so I assume that was a defensive benching. I really had very few notes from Russ in his second half. The -23 in 22 minutes was not good. He needs to be better on D than he was tonight. Still great to see the offensive game and the explosive finishing back to his game, but we need to get Ws. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-14 shooting (2-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -23.

Jones -- -- With LeBron out, we slid Gabriel to starting PF. That meant Jones would backup AD. Good to get him some run. He would miss some dunks and hit a jumper. He tipped in one of those dunk misses. He got to the line and hit all four. Defensively, some shot alterations. He needs to get that second bounce or recovery after those to box out or go after boards. He got a little flatfooted on one and allowed a tip in from behind. Teammates need to crash the glass to help when he’s hunting shotblocks. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-6 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -7.

Toscano-Anderson -- -- He hasn’t really looked comfortable or found a role on this team yet. What worked well for him in Golden State was his ability to cut, attack or use the gravity of Steph to his advantage and get downhill. We don’t have that gravity with a guard that works for him. Pretty much a nothing game. He was lucky to not injure JC stepping under him on an And-1 three in the first half. That resulted in a 4-point play and flagrant. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 0-1 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -8.

Ryan -- -- The shot struggled to drop. Defensively…I kind of miss Swider, lol. Ryan needs to work a ton on that end. I did see what looked like some attempts to mirror the offensive players. But when it comes to putting up a challenge on a shot, guys just don’t feel him at all. The Stats: He had 2 points on on 0-4 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 1 board and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -11.

Christie -- -- Good to see him get some early run. He came in with a few minutes left in the first quarter and matched against Sexton. He would knock down a couple of threes, which is exactly what we want to see from him. Hopefully, he’s getting used to that NBA range. He’d also have a nice dive cut off an AD double team that would end up with a layup for Christie on the cut. He looked comfortable out there. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and no fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -16.

Pippen -- -- Garbage time run. He picked up his dribble for no reason after probing and threw the pass away. Brain freeze. He didn’t run out the clock and promptly got swatted at the end of this. Then fouled on the inbounds. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 0-2 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 6 minutes. He was a +0. Or is that a -0 in a 139-116 loss?

Ham -- -- Key Moment: Maybe the first couple minutes of the third quarter. Just seeing the team getting clubbed out of the locker room again in the third quarter is tiresome.

Key Substitution: We’re missing LeBron, Walker, Beverley, Bryant and Schröder. It’s possible anyone in that group could all be our starters (along with AD). There are no key substitutions.

Key Stats: We gave up 139 points. I’m surprised it wasn’t 150. Just awful.

Good on you for paying full attention until the end. My attention definitely wavered in the 4th quarter lol

Thanks DB

Third quarters are just brutal. During the championship year, we used to own those 3rd quarters.

tough one to analyze

AD is an uber talented player but can he ever be the 1A option on offense since he doesn't have the mindset to dominate - ala Paul Gasol

I could talk about all the bad things that happened in this game but when half of your team is out what is the point. Any team in the NBA with half of their roster out is going to struggle like the Lakers did.

Yeah, most of us chalked it up as a loss going in, but we can still see how it fit a pattern of most of our other losses - poor defense.

We are smaller (height-wise) than some of the titan teams out there at almost every position. Some of that is injuries right now, but we also need more larger forwards to roam defensively so that they can help affect the accuracy of 3-ball shooters, interfere more with passing lanes, and establish our dominance on the boards.

Last night vs. a highly talented Utah team, all of their snipers effortlessly shot over our undersized squad with no fear. We need more length, especially in the front court, like we had when we won the championship in 2020.

Almost took this game off, but I think I will take Friday's off instead. Just looked like an easy L walking into it because of that.
