Gabriel -- -- The team is really putting a lot of trust in him, having him out there trying to close games. Another good outing from him. His first half in this one was packed full of the little things that coaches like. First, all motor and effort. He’s keeping offensive boards alive or scoring on putbacks. That’s the kind of stuff you need around ball-dominant players. He’s also setting hard screens to allow both Bron and Westbrook to get downhill. Those guys are also looking for him after he rolls off those, as well. But he’s stopping defenders and the screens and our guys are getting speed into that drop coverage and making things happen. Defensively, we had to deal with the foul issues. He can seemingly hang with the bigs at times, but as the last line of defense with guards running at you, that can be trouble. He fouled out with a couple minutes left when DS let his man get around him on iso. After he fouled out, he sat next to AD who was in his ear, most likely about how to avoid a foul and going vertical. He also had Bron in his ear, as well, throughout the game. Really enjoying his growth this season and seeing the coaches reward him. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-8 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards (5 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 6 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +15.

Looks like his physique still has a lot room to grow, he actually got stronger this season and can actually hold his own against bigger centers. Need to bulk up more.

Wenyen Gabriel is more than just an energy big Although he plays his blue-collar billing to a tee, the 25-year-old also moonlights as a pick and roll dynamo and blocking maestro.

He could have help yesterday against the Celtics but Ham opted to use smaller players. Lakers can really play big now without sacrificing quickness and spacing. Now that Lebron is playing SF again I don't see why Wenyen is not playing.

If you look at any advanced stats or line ups you will see that Gabriel is actually pretty elite as a role player. Ham is stunted though. He never played Bryant until AD went down and Bryant averaged 15-8.

I know, i love Gabriel. What I don't want is H am playing him w scrubs seeing the team not do well and thinking Gabriel is a scrub also.he doesnt know talent as we saw with Bryant not plaaying b4 ad went down. And now dnping christie and gabriel.
He is a top contributor on this team and I love what he brings on both ends. If it was up to me he would be getting 25mpg.
I was hoping we could retain him for cheap this summer with his low cap hold and early bird rights. With him now out of the rotation it seems unlikely. If they do make it to the playoffs when teams tend to go smaller, I could imagine a lot of time for him as a small-ball center. That should give Wenyen around 14 minutes per game. That is 14 minutes of Lakers basketball with the highest levels of energy and hustle, as well as competent defense and rebounding. I truly believe this will help the Lakers maintain and even extend leads (and avoid these nail-biting finishes).
