Another Big LeBron Night, Another Road Win... Back-to-back 40+ point games from LeBron. Better yet, back-to-back Ws for the Lakers.

Two turnovers to start the game in the first two possessions as the Lakers stumbled briefly out of the gates. But they got it together and rattled off a 9-0 run to take an early 14-5 lead. The turnovers, however, plagued them during that first quarter, mix in some poor shot selection by L.A., and the Hornets were able to catch them by the end of the first.

The Lakers went on a 12-0 run to start the second quarter as Reaves and Bron picked up the scoring and the defense was challenging well. The two of them put on a show all quarter, including a couple of fastbreak where Reaves set the table and LeBron finished. The Lakers led 60-45 at the half.

Behind Bron hitting more fades, steamrolling defenders and setting up teammates, the Lakers quickly pulled out to a 24-point lead in the first few minutes of the third. The quarter was highlighted by a windmill reverse lob dunk by Bron on the break. The Charlotte crowd went nuts.

The Lakers led by 18 heading into the fourth, winning all three quarters. A good first few minutes and they could bury the Hornets for good.

The Hornets started attacking, getting to the rim and drawing fouls. They rattled off a 10-1 run to cut it to single digits. So much for that.

The Hornets trimmed it to 6 with over a minute left. As the Lakers missed a shot, Thomas Bryant crashed the offensive glass, tapped the ball, got control and powered up for a dunk over Plumlee. The Laker bench was on their feet.

The Hornets wouldn’t go away. They’d cut the lead to 4 as Rozier was heating up. They had Bron tangled up in the backcourt, but couldn’t come up with a turnover. The Lakers would finish them off at the freethrow line and win 121-115.

LeBron -- -- Just another 40+ point outing for Bron. That’s 90 points in his last two games. The first three quarters of this game were just dominant. The one-footed fades tonight were money. As the Lakers started getting out on the break, Bron was unstoppable on the finishes. He and Reaves teamed up for a couple of nice ones, but the lob from Schröder to LBJ for the reverse windmill finish brought the house down. When the Lakers were cruising in the third quarter, he was playing on another level. The Hornets had to send quite a bit of extra help and as Bron’s scoring impact started to fade, they switched it up and looked for him to set the table more. If you are a fan of basketball, the last couple of LeBron games you just kind of have to step back and enjoy what he’s doing at this stage of his career. Glad to see the Lakers also getting the Ws. The Stats: He scored 43 points on 16-26 shooting (0-5 from three, 11-15 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 40 minutes. He was a +9.

Bryant -- -- A couple big fourth quarter dunks by Bryant. The first was on an ATO screen-the-screener action. The defense was worried about Brown popping out off the screen and then LeBron off the Bryant screen, but he slipped it and Bron hit him rolling for a dunk. Good play call to take advantage of the attention LeBron was drawing. On the other dunk, Bryant crashed the glass after a Laker missed shot, tapped it to himself, gathered and dunked over Plumlee. That was probably the final dagger. Just an effort play from him. He had 15 boards on the night and 5 of those were on the offensive end. That’s what we want. Some very good chemistry with LeBron all night. Several of Bryant’s scores were keyed off LBJ finding him. Sometimes on two-man action, sometimes just diving off the attention LeBron drew. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 9-17 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 15 boards (5 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -7.

Schröder -- -- Late in the game, he made a defender touch the ground on an iso, pull-back that he turned into a jumper. This was just after getting T’d up with Smith Jr. after he kind of got bullied in the paint on a score. It wasn’t anything chippy by either player. Schröder had some aggressive moments throughout the game. Some of that aggressiveness would led to scores for Bryant at Schröder got into the paint or drew help defenders. He also found Gabriel for an And-1 as well on a baseline attack. Solid outing and we needed that with Russ not positively impacting things. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-11 shooting (1-3 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 1 board, 5 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +4.

Brown -- -- In the mix in the starting lineup as his shooting has picked up and he gives us more true size at the SF. Reaves had been slumping a little in the past couple games, so he returned to the bench for this one. It seemed to work out for both guys. Brown only took threes tonight and made 4-8, including a big one with 2:38 left. Some really good passing sequences by the Lakers that led to some looks. The swing-swing actions were finding him open. He also had a nice kickout himself to Reaves for a corner three after Brown quickly moved a pass to him. Defensively, some nice hustle moments. He missed a shot on one end, but hustled back to steal the ball in transition and turn it into an opportunity the other way. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-8 shooting from three to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +7.

Beverley -- -- Another one of those good first half games where he then kind of disappears later. The stat that sticks out tonight is the three blocks. He had some excellent recoveries to his men to swat them from behind. The best was one on Ball that Bev just ate up and led to a Bron score the other way. His scores were on a couple of threes in the first half. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-7 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -2.

Westbrook -- -- Poor first quarter shift, taking some ill-advised long shots in early offense and turning the ball over. There was a bit more of that in the second quarter. They said he had a sore foot and decided to not play him in the second half. I’m not sure how a sore foot could impact the myriad of bad decisions that were going on out there. Maybe, but look at these numbers: 11 minutes only; 1-8 shooting during that time, including missing three threes, some of these early in the shotclock; then you mix in the 3 turnovers during that time. It was just a trainwreck. Thankfully, the Hornets are not a good team, because the Lakers didn’t really skip a beat with all that suckaged condensed into 11 minutes. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-8 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a +8.

Reaves -- -- You know at some point the guys are going to be positioning themselves to be the one to set up LeBron for his record breaking score. Reaves was out there as a full on wingman tonight. He was getting out on the break and finding Bron for finishes, including an nice lob in the first half. “The stuff that he does,” Reaves said of LeBron, “the way that he moves, the contact that he endures in a full game and the way his body has held up is super impressive.” He said he’s loving playing on this team and along side the superstar. Imagine being in his shoes -- a second-year player, around world-class athletes and gelling with one of the greatest ever. There was a play in the first half, where Reaves grabbed the board after his man missed the shot. He pushed it out, lost the defender by going behind his back, then no-looked to LeBron to finish at the rim. Some great plays from Reaves tonight. He had a steal on an inbounds in the backcourt with 2.5 seconds left and hit a jumper to end the first half. The three ball was back on target as he sank both that he took. He had another stop-and-go score for a layup in the second half. Multiple times he set the table for teammates, including hitting Gabriel on the break and running a two-man action with Bron that led to a short-roll kick out to Nunn for a three. I liked, too, that the coaches also called Reaves’ number on an ATO early in the game. He curled into the paint after taking a pass and sank an And-1. Smart thinking, getting his confidence going early with a play specifically for him and then he rolled from there. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-7 shooting (2-2 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +6.

Gabriel -- -- Some good energy out there. He had a great battle in a crowd for an offensive board in the first half. Some good awareness also on a Schröder drive making himself available and scoring the And-1. He also had a nice reverse in transition. He led the team with the +/- tonight with +15. That was mostly just being in the right rotations, but the Lakers were at their best tonight when they were getting up and down the court with speed and he does that well. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +15.

Nunn -- -- With Russ not playing in the second half, some minutes opened up for Nunn. He’d swish a corner three off a kickout on a short-roll from Reaves. He’d also score after keeping his dribble alive and hitting a short jumphook on the other side of the rim after a drive. He looked decisive on that play. Again, he got up a lot of shots in short minutes. Defensively, he gave up a late And-1 to Ball unable to stick with him on a drive. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board and 1 foul in 6 minutes. He was a -4.

Toscano-Anderson -- -- Not a lot of positive impact on this one. He was a bit-foul prone and his one attempt from three hit the side of the backboard. Thankfully, it wasn’t very noticeable. The team had some good energy throughout and didn’t really need a lift from him there. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -10.

Ham -- -- Key Moment: They Lakers were able to extend their halftime lead with a strong start to the third, but a lot of that was just LBJ doing LBJ stuff. I really liked some of the ATO decisions tonight, so let’s cover a key one. The Lakers needed a score late in the game as the Hornets were threatening a comeback. Out of a timeout, they ran a screen-the-screener action that opened up Bryant rolling for a dunk. That play took advantage of all the attention that LeBron was drawing. Maybe it helped Bryant sustain that energy for that big finish on another dunk off a hustle play on the offensive boards later.

Key Substitution: The Reaves we know returned to the floor tonight. He was efficient and had the ball in his hands a lot, especially on the break. I liked the coaches setting up Reaves early on with a play call. That was the curl play mentioned above in the Reaves write-up. The intention of getting Reaves into his sweet spot in the middle of the lane to score or make the right decision. gave your young player some early confidence. He got rolling and played a strong 22 minutes. Good work from the staff.

Key Stats: After the turnover-prone first quarter, the Lakers really tightened things up and finished with 15 on the night. Good in-game recovery there.

Well, good on LeBron for torching teams again. Good to see Reaves snapped out of his slump as well. And good to see the Lakers competing with AD down.

DB - thanks again for an excellent write-up!

Not destroying teams and closing them out - work in progress

Thanks DB!!! Brown should replace Walker in the starting lineup (good for both players). Great move by Ham keeping Brick on the bench. Bryant is really becoming a VERY solid player for us (I don't recall seeing a big hustle as much as this kid). Bev continues his good work and upswing for the past month.

It's amazing to see a guy that is 38 years old doing this kind of stuff. Simply amazing.

And the Lakers should really find a way to keep Thomas Bryant and Austin Reaves.
Nice to see Troy Brown showing some signs of life, too.

I’m not against bringing them back but we have to realize that doing so limits our ability to fill other holes. Cap space will be tight and more minimum players will probably man a lot of the roster spots.

Thanks DB.

So, I'll be that guy. Takes a dominant LBJ performance to win against a poor team. I'm not sure what to take from this other than, ok, we beat a really bad team with LBJ laying it all out there. But, will take the W.

My favorite stat of the night: Lebron went 0-5 at the 3P line.

Of course I'm not happy that he missed them all, but I am very pleased that he only took five attempts. In general, he's been more disciplined lately about taking too many threes, and I really appreciate it.

Net off : -18

This is exactly why, if only, Bron and AD peak together going into playoff or even play in, we honestly have a shot

My favorite stat of the night: Lebron went 0-5 at the 3P line.

Of course I'm not happy that he missed them all, but I am very pleased that he only took five attempts. In general, he's been more disciplined lately about taking too many threes, and I really appreciate it.

Seemed kind of like he was just bullying a bunch of little kids out there at times. So they had to send multiple kids to cover him. Then he just passes out of those as teammates are understanding their options off ball to make things happen.

I know I'm a broken record by now, but on offense that's exactly how we handled our business on the road to championship #17... playing BIG.

Lebron, AD, D12, McGee, and even Morris and Kuz at times would abuse smaller opponents guarding them down low. Obviously playing big worked out well on defense also.

This is why for two straight seasons I continue to complain about A: our injuries, and B: our small roster. We won it all by playing bigger than everyone else, and it's the team's best chance at success again if Rob gets his act together by bringing in more size ASAP.
