Some will say LeBron James, while others will say Michael Jordan but Pat Riley has a different answer. The longtime Miami heat head coach and now president of the team thinks that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the greatest to ever do it.

"I always said that Kareem was the greatest player of all time because of his longevity," Riley said, via ESPN.

That's what he said.
But what's he say now that Lebron is looking like he's gonna have that longevity.

Magic was a better basketball player than Kareem or LBJ imo.

Just got sidetracked from injuries and HIV

He and Bird kept Jordan from winning for years.

I'm still pissed at him for the bad team management... but he still was the best player I ever saw.

I prefer how Riley expressed it one of his books — very roughly paraphrasing here — in a game for life or death, who do you want on your basketball team in the closing minutes?

Meh. I prefer era stratified GOATs. It's insanely difficult and pointless to compare players across different eras, so I've stopped doing it. The game has changed so much today. For example, prime Kobe would average around 40-45 points a game today because of the rules favoring offensive players. It's just such a radically different game than before.

60s - Rusell/Wilt
70s - Kareem/Dr.J
80s - Magic/Bird
90s - MJ/Shaq
00s - Kobe/Duncan
10s - LBJ/Curry

All of the aforementioned players changed or evolved the game in some way. In terms of who changed it the most, I'd say MJ and Curry are at the very top. Curry is basically the reason you have 5 year olds shooting 3pt shots in peewee games.

Guys, KAJ had an UNSTOPPABLE shot. Nobody could touch it. Not Wilt, not Russell, not Hakeem, nobody could. So KAJ in his prime for one game, yeah, I take him. Problem is most on this board never saw him play, and if they did, it was old man Kareem, not Bucks Kareem.

If we are saying everyone will play their best game (which isn't fair really, the chance should still remain, but with player just being in their prime physically). Then all of those players could carry you for one game. But taking the chance of a person getting doubled every time, or just not feeling it, Kareem always had an open shot when he wasn't open because of that skyhook. Know what I mean? Everybody else has to put it on the floor, or juke somebody. Kareem just goes over the top every. single. time.

Kareem deserves that spot as much as anyone. Insane talent with unmatched durability.

if we went strictly on resume, guys from Boston would be at the top of the list.

MJ has a great resume but certainly not the best but is still universally considered the goat. Magic, kobe, the same. KAJ is really the only guy that wins on resume. He is definitely #1 or #2

So as I said its really never about resume. KAJ is up there because like MJ they were just great.

How about finals appearance?
Lakers 30
Celtics 20
Warriors 10
King of Akron 10
Knicks 8

After Kobe, where you put that guy?

My top 4 are set. If there was a draft and I had the #1 pick and it was between

TD
Shaq
Bron
Wilt

I probably take bron 3rd or maybe second before shaq. TD IMHO was unreal and if he wore our jersey would be considered way greater. Cousins IIRC said TD is top 5 all-time.

Prime TD vs Prime bron with all parts being equal I take TD. So everyone can feel fuzzy Bron is 6th which is amazing in the big picture.

You mention those ten finals. All I heard for decade when he was rolling was how weak the east was. He success was diminished on a daily basis. I wish we had that guy. A lot of that came from Laker fans which Im sure if mined for, would be found here.

Instead of asking who is THE GOAT, the question should just be who is YOUR GOAT.

Too subjective of a topic.
