Got until 1/10 to guarantee his contract, hope he doesnt go Avery Bradley and go off on the game prior to the deadline to get it guaranteed. God..can't believe Rob guaranteed Bradley just because from that one game.

Wenyen Gabriel is becoming a solid role player for the Lakers. His energy, enthusiasm and hustle has provided a much needed boost in AD's absence.

Gabriel provided Los Angeles with excellent production off the bench, leading the team in rebounds and nearly securing a double-double.

Gabriel -- -- The team is really putting a lot of trust in him, having him out there trying to close games. Another good outing from him. His first half in this one was packed full of the little things that coaches like. First, all motor and effort. He’s keeping offensive boards alive or scoring on putbacks. That’s the kind of stuff you need around ball-dominant players. He’s also setting hard screens to allow both Bron and Westbrook to get downhill. Those guys are also looking for him after he rolls off those, as well. But he’s stopping defenders and the screens and our guys are getting speed into that drop coverage and making things happen. Defensively, we had to deal with the foul issues. He can seemingly hang with the bigs at times, but as the last line of defense with guards running at you, that can be trouble. He fouled out with a couple minutes left when DS let his man get around him on iso. After he fouled out, he sat next to AD who was in his ear, most likely about how to avoid a foul and going vertical. He also had Bron in his ear, as well, throughout the game. Really enjoying his growth this season and seeing the coaches reward him. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-8 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards (5 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 6 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +15.

Ok, so my eyes are not deceiving me. He is improving....really well. I read his bio coming out of Kentucky. He's got some game. The young man is just the kind of gem we need to develop on the cheap w/James, Davis & Westbrook monopolizing most of the cap. Need more like him & Reaves.

Looks like his physique still has a lot room to grow, he actually got stronger this season and can actually hold his own against bigger centers. Need to bulk up more.

It’s very key that we will have his early bird rights this summer.

He's getting more than the minimum. I can see a team giving him up to $5m. Will the Lakers pay him? (And yes, good thing we have his low cap hold).

Wenyen Gabriel is more than just an energy big
Although he plays his blue-collar billing to a tee, the 25-year-old also moonlights as a pick and roll dynamo and blocking maestro.

In an era of basketball that is littered with labels like “primary creators,” “hubs” and “3 and D’ers”, players like Wenyen Gabriel often get clustered within a miscellaneous column.

He does not posses a singular skill like shooting, he does not have a definitive position and he is already on his fifth team in just four years.
Because of this, his talents while visible, are often spoken in generalities instead of specifics.

Wenyen has been playing well & has contributed to the team with his energy, hustle and enthusiasm.
I hope he doesn't get lost in the shuffle created by the return of AD and the acquisition of Ru.
His minutes will naturally be cut but he still has the potential to help this team in a number of ways.

He could have help yesterday against the Celtics but Ham opted to use smaller players. Lakers can really play big now without sacrificing quickness and spacing. Now that Lebron is playing SF again I don't see why Wenyen is not playing.

If you look at any advanced stats or line ups you will see that Gabriel is actually pretty elite as a role player. Ham is stunted though. He never played Bryant until AD went down and Bryant averaged 15-8.

Then you cant expect him to play well. He relies on other stars

I mean he can showcase his energy and hustle. You are not relying your rebounding and defense on stars.

I know, i love Gabriel. What I don't want is H am playing him w scrubs seeing the team not do well and thinking Gabriel is a scrub also.he doesnt know talent as we saw with Bryant not plaaying b4 ad went down. And now dnping christie and gabriel.

He is a top contributor on this team and I love what he brings on both ends. If it was up to me he would be getting 25mpg.

I was hoping we could retain him for cheap this summer with his low cap hold and early bird rights. With him now out of the rotation it seems unlikely. If they do make it to the playoffs when teams tend to go smaller, I could imagine a lot of time for him as a small-ball center. It also depends on how much time you see Bron and Rui spending at the 3 or at least co-existing as combo forwards.

Repost but from the TB thread, but feels even more relevant here:

As the tweet says, "the film supports it." Teams hunt TB. They are ecstatic when he's in the game and go after him at the rim.

The Lakers needed TB's offense when AD was out. But now that the Lakers have AD and his offensive production back, I think it would be best to decrease TB's minutes and end this nonsense with Wenyen's DNP-CDs.

Wenyen will provide the team the energy/hustle/rebounding and defense that the team so desperately needs. And unfortunately TB isn't able to provide.

TB has been averaging about 19 MPG in the 3 games that AD has played in since his return. Wenyen has controversially been a DNP-CD.

I would love to see TB's minutes drop to 10 MPG (a 5 minute shift per half), so that Darvin could give Wenyen the other 9 minutes. Then, reduce LeBron's load a bit to about 34 MPG (he has 35, 39, and 38 minutes played in regulation, not counting OT, in the 3 games AD has played since his return) and give Wenyen the difference in minutes.

That should give Wenyen around 14 minutes per game. That is 14 minutes of Lakers basketball with the highest levels of energy and hustle, as well as competent defense and rebounding. I truly believe this will help the Lakers maintain and even extend leads (and avoid these nail-biting finishes).

Just decrease Pat Bevs or RW minutes.
