Not covering tonight’s game. But giving up 47 points in the third quarter? Yikes. Hard to win doing that. Up 6 in the third after the first couple minutes. They still had the lead by a point midway through the quarter. They were tied with 3:34 left in the third. Ja just got a running start into the offensive zone again and again, and the Lakers got smoked to close the quarter.

The 26 turnovers and 22 assists on the road will kill you. A lot fewer on-the-mark passes with Bron and DLo out. So many passes just sprayed around the court and not delivered to shooting pockets.

The Lakers cut it to 6 in the first minute of the fourth, so it was still a ball game. They’d cut it down further later on an AD And-1 that trimmed it to 4 with 4:48 left. On the road with a chance to steal one without two stars, not bad. Ultimately, however, not enough firepower and too many turnovers to get them over the hump. (We were back to a lot of three guard lineups tonight.)

1st!

I didn't understand the turnovers from Schro...he had been decent all year. The squad also missed sooo many finishers around the rim. Even with 23 turnovers the team cut the lead to 4 but then almost immediately committed 3 more and missed another layup.

Maybe consider more LWIV at backup point guard tomorrow. Reaves was the only double digit minus tonight with -17 and 4 turnovers but Schro also had 6...yikes...but Schro was only a -1.

I wonder what Ham was doing with Mo Bamba? He played only 1 minute and that was garbage time. With S Adams out of the game at C for Memphis you would think the game plan would have been to abuse them inside. AD beasting on offense and Bamba cleaning up the boards limiting the Grizz to one shot attempt per possession.

Also, Ham can't let a hot guard continue to just kill us without making quicker adjustments. 28 points from Ja in the 3rd, 26 turnovers, and still within 4 at the 5 min mark. The Lakers could have stolen this game. Oh well...on to the next one.

Ad with only one less TO than our pg is laughable. His rim protection wasn’t great.

Otherwise we were outclassed and perfectly healthy we probably lose as well

Not gonna beat a team like that with no LBJ and no Dlo

Unfortunate injury bug hit when it did; been typical for this season.

Keep our fingers crossed that dlo comes back and he and DS can be impactful enough at point of attack to get them to stay afloat while LBJ out

Teams are pressuring up on us because they know we’re basically starting over with the rotation. Limited familiarity and execution. Not many counters, just running the generic stuff. When you have a healthy LeBron, you’re insulated from that. Without him or DAngelo, turnover city. No time to look for development opportunities because we need every win.

Unforced open court TOs leading to uncontested layups were the death kneel of the Lakers.

Bad thing is the TOs
“Good Thing” is that the Clips, Jazz and Mavs also lost
Bad thing is there is one less game in the schedule
Good thing is that every team that the Lakers play are worth 2 games in the standing
Bad thing is that it is unknown how long LBJ will be out

Both teams have similar stats, EXCEPT for steals and turnovers

Eight teams – OKC, Portland, New Orleans, Minnesota, Utah, Golden State, Dallas and the Clippers – all have worse records than LAL’s 6-4 in their last 10.

With AD and Schroeder committing high number of TOs, with Reeves and Skywalker behind them, Lakers don’t deserve to win

We crushed them in the 3 point game (we were 13-34 for 38% while they were 6-31 for 19%) which rarely happens for us. We did not take advantage of this. The TO's were a KILLER (26 to 6).

It seems like having both LeBron and Dlo out at the same time is tough, as it messes up our ball handling. Hope they can tighten up for tonight's game, which is more crucial.

Overusing Dennis and Reaves (who started faltering in the 2nd half), but who else is there?

Lonnie is a scorer and a pretty bad playmaker so he's not a PG option. Without LBJ, you do need to have playmakers.

We badly need DLO back so we can have Dennis off the bench, and Austin supporting both in his role.

We haven't seen a lot of Bamba so far, but my impression is that there is something off about him. I can't put my finger on it, and his stat line looks okay (other than shooting, but it's a tiny sample size). When he couldn't get playing time in Orlando and now can't get playing time for us, it makes you wonder if there is something going on beneath the surface.

Good Points

Grizzs scored 47 points in the 3rd quarter while the Lakers scored 35 points

How many TOs did we have in the 3rd quarter

Confusion between AD and DS is confusing to understand, were the Grizzs defending differently?

Who was Morant guarding on defense and why we didn’t isolate on Morant while we were on offense

DS is definitely a good PG, but obviously not an elite PG - nor did anybody have any expectation for him to be one.

If Brown can’t defend Morant and is ineffective on offense, his minutes against should be limited - at best

When we are forced to have Hashinura create on a very good defensive team, that spells trouble

We worked very hard, Morant worked harder and carried the team.

With entire new roster in place, it would be disastrous to employ different defensive schemes

This game against a very good team with little changes in its lineup with few injuries (noting Adams’ absence)!was a good barometer and teaching opportunities for Ham

Good thing is that we defeated ourselves, not that the Grizzs outclassed us in talent

Even with LBJ/DLo healthy, this was a tough game to win. Tonight’s game against OKC is an important game to win

“Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins calls out to his players during the first half of their game against the Lakers on Tuesday night”

Lakers coach Darvin Ham calls out to his players during the second half of their game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night

Against the hard-nosed Grizzlies, the Lakers lacked coordination and leadership on offense, two of the key things that James provides. And while a scrappy defensive effort helped keep them neck-and-neck with Memphis for 2½ quarters, the makeshift dam broke in a 47-point third led by the relentless strides of Morant, who scored 28 of his 39 points in the period and finished with 10 rebounds and 10 assists for a triple-double.

The most glaring problem was the Lakers’ 26 turnovers, which Memphis ruthlessly converted into 41 points. The Lakers rarely looked on the same page offensively, throwing the ball to sidelines of empty space and shouting at each other.

It was always going to be a challenge to blend a team with six new players acquired since mid-January – it’s harder without James or injured point guard D’Angelo Russell, who missed his second straight game and is expected to miss at least one more.

“We held it, I felt like, for too many extra seconds, too many extra dribbles,” Coach Darvin Ham said. “It throws off the rhythm and timing, allows their defense to catch up. And they’re a tough, physical ball club. There’s a reason why they are who they are.”

The Lakers attempted to counter him with Dennis Schröder, Austin Reaves, Troy Brown Jr. and Jarred Vanderbilt – but none could backpedal fast enough to keep the speedy All-Star in front of them.

His passes to his bigs were also a huge factor in the 86 points in the paint that nearly doubled the Lakers’ total (48).

“The Lakers (29-33) had several turnovers that allowed Memphis to play its preferred up-tempo style, and the Grizzlies took advantage with 33 transition points and a franchise record 41 points off of turnovers.

Missing Impact players
The Lakers and Grizzlies were both missing impact starters, and the difference was noticeable. Without Steven Adams, Memphis got a double-double from Xavier Tillman Sr., but Jarred Vanderbilt and Anthony Davis were active and aggressive as rebounders. Without LeBron James and D'Angelo Russell, Dillon Brooks guarded Dennis Schroder, and limited his scoring impact.

It must be the shoes
Morant was struggling to score in the first half. He shot 3-for-14 and had six points. After wearing his "Midnight" Ja 1 sneakers in the first half, Morant switched to Ja 1 "scratch" player exclusives in the second half. The All-Star point guard followed the shoe change by finishing with the highest-scoring quarter in franchise history. Morant scored 28 points in the third quarter on 10-for-12 shooting.

Morant's third-quarter eruption was part of a big frame by the Grizzlies. Memphis scored 47 points in the third quarter after totaling 46 points in the first half.

Finishing the job
Much has been made of the recent Grizzlies struggles to close out games. A little more than a month ago, that concerning stretch started after a late-game blown lead against the Lakers. Memphis took care of business on Tuesday. Morant kept his foot on the pedal late in the fourth, and the Grizzlies' defense was communicating at a high level while forcing turnovers.

Mo Bamba only played 1 minute. I don't understand why he wasn't given more PT. His forte is defense. It's not stellar it's adequate. He wouldn't have stopped Ja but he could have slowed him down. Mo had 6 fouls, 6 hard fouls to give.

This game was winnable. Darvin's inexperience was exposed. He didn't make any adjustments.
