Congrats Jay Huff for being named G-League Defensive Player of the Year:

Quote:
Jay Huff, a Wizards center/forward who is on a two-way contract, has been named the 2022-23 NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year, the NBA announced. The runner-up is another player with Wizards ties: former Capital City Go-Go guard Kris Dunn, now with the Utah Jazz.

Pelinka, you coulda woulda shoulda snagged this guy when you had the chance. A defensive backup front court player is our biggest need heading into the playoffs.

I’ve been told LeGM typically gets in the way when it’s an obvious wtf!? (non)move.

Getting him into that 15th roster spot on a 1yr RoS deal for these last 6 days of the season would have cost us 63k in salary + 206k in associated taxes, while gaining us RFA / early bird rights on dude.

He is a RFA. We can give him a 2nd round rookie contract under the new CBA for next season.

Huff signed the two-way on March 1. Doesn't that make him playoff ineligible to join the Lakers if released after that date?

@lakerican: you can poach players away from other teams that have them on two-ways, but only with a standard NBA contract (whether that’s a ROS deal or a 10-dayer). Btw we never drafted Huff in the 2nd round, so we don’t have his player rights. If he stays on DC’s two-way till the season expires, then he will be DC’s RFA player as long as they put down a qualifying offer for dude.

@joe: all two-way players are ineligible for the playoffs. Players with standard NBA deals must be waived by March 1st to be playoff eligible. Dude signed a two-way deal, so he still remains an eligible free agent in terms of playoff eligibility via a standard NBA contract.

@epic: he got no real run on DC’s big boy team, but in the G-League (between DC & South Bay) he avg 15pts, 8rbs and 3blks in 26 mins per.

Ah, the Legend of Jay Huff.

Jay Huff has been waived by the Wizards, then waived by us twice. We got a really good look at him, and we gave our two-way contracts to Pippen and Swider. The Wizards gave him another two-way contract, resulting in a total of 15 minutes played in the NBA.

So you think we should have signed him and given him minutes? Sure thing.

It was more for a 6-foul/5-10m cover for AD given Bamba is out.

Wenyen is our next 'big man' if you can even call him that.

This.

Nice guy, nice story, but he's not an NBA caliber player.

Would sure rather we had him on a two way than Pippen, who seemed pretty pointless to me considering we had/have

Westbrook, Beverley, Schröder, Nunn, Walker, Christie, Reaves
Russell, Schröder, Reaves, Beasley, Walker, Christie, Reed

And considering that after Davis and Bamba, our next "big" is Gabriel. Before the trades it was Davis, Bryant, Jones, still pretty thin

If you think that Jay Huff would be part of a strong, sustainable roster, you've been watching too much college basketball.

He did have his first extended minutes NBA game last night and played well.

27 minutes, 17 points (3 -6 from 3), and 9 boards.

Nah, I just been hitting the jay pretty hard. Gotta help ease my nerves watching AD play another 40+ minute game in a role he hasn’t wanted from day 1.

You know this isn’t solely about Jay…it’s been about using that 14th spot on Reed, not using that 15th spot at all, not using the left over MLE last year, showing our #7 overall pick the door, offloading Zu’s 1.95m caphold knowing we need a C as we trade for our potential franchise player in AD…you know, it’s about squandering our resources.

We’ve know what dude wanted from the jump, yet gave him the near bare minimum. Trez and Mo were MLE adds, but from Boog, to Dwight, to McGee, to Kieff, to Drummond, to Dwight again, to DJ, to Damien and to TB, it’s literally been next to minimum given to our supposed franchise player.

Anyways, my anxiety’s hitting again…so give it here. You f’n up the “rotation”…yeah, I’m taking to you Rob….it’s huff, puff, pass…

I know. We agree about far more things than we disagree about. But Jay Huff? Naw.

As RI points out, Huff actually posted some decent numbers last night. But look at that box score for the Wizards. Wow. The Wizards have definitely identified their priority for the rest of the season. They've actually "passed" the Magic and just need the Blazers to "drop" another game by winning. This calls for an emoji.

^^^^

Have you actually watched any of the game? I did. He looks better than he did before. I'll give him that. His mobility is improved. I think he may have taken off some weight. But really, the Hawks are pretty much ignoring him. He looks like the kind of player who might stick as a bench scrub. That's an improvement over what he looked like with us.

Xavier Cooks is playing, too. He doesn't look like much. In fact, the whole Wizards team is sort of comical. Kendrick Nunn may be their best player.
