Execution... If you like basketball, this game was played well by both teams. The turnovers were low. The ball was moving. There weren’t the head-shaking, knucklehead possessions that can drive you mad. Neither team had guys pounding the ball into the ground.

The Lakers came out of the gates focused and dialed in. With 3:40 left in the first quarter, the Lakers had a 32-12 lead. AD led the way, just a monster on both ends of the floor.

While the Warriors had Curry return, the Lakers were still without Russell and LeBron. Despite not having their two primary playmakers, they made it work behind Reaves and Schröder. The two combined for 14 of the Lakers 29 assists.

The Warriors were able to make up ground as AD and Vando sat and the production fell off. As they caught the Lakers, it was anyone’s game.

In crunch time, just about everyone in the purple and gold stepped up with big plays and buckets. But AD delivered on back-to-back post-ups to give the Lakers just enough separation and take the 113-105 win..

Davis -- -- Dominant out of the gates tonight. Best player on the floor early and it set the tone. He had 23 points on 9-13 shooting, 3 assists and a couple of blocks in the first half. We didn’t have a tremendous amount of iso ball in this game, but AD was the guy that really gave it to them. He’d knock down those face-ups, get downhill for other scores and work the low post. Late in the game, they went to him to close. First one, they got the switch, AD swung through and got FTs with 1:26. He made both to go up 4. We went to the post again, this time straight up against Green. He attacked baseline and hit the short one at the rim and let out a scream, putting the Lakers up 6. This is the guy. The one who you can win games against tough teams. He’s dropping big numbers on offense and protecting the paint on D. Anytime he was out of the game, it was sketchy. (He was a +17, Gabriel/Bamba were a -9.) The Stats: He scored 39 points on 14-25 shooting (1-3 from three, 10-13 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 6 assists, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +17.

Schröder -- -- He had to spend time chasing around Curry and Poole. With our defense sagging off the Warrior bigs, this meant perimeter defenders were on their own dealing with those screens. Late in the game, he was battling. He managed to deflect a pass and tried to recover on the floor, but Curry got to it. He stole a pass to Curry with 3 minutes left up by 8. That was a big stop coming after he and AD teamed up for a score. Dennis attacked some backcourt pressure, then hit AD for the floater. Throw in some late FTs with 38 seconds left and he gave the team a strong close. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-13 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 6 assists, 1 steal, no turnover and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -6.

Vanderbilt -- -- To start the second half, he cut around Curry trying to seal him as Vando’s man went to help on Dennis. Schröder found him for the dunk. That’s why you don’t stand around when someone is driving. Put yourself into open space and a passing lane and good things will happen. On the other end of the floor, we were hacking the system on D by sagging off Green. So Green airballed a three as we packed the paint an denied passing lanes. He’d follow this up with near perfect role player execution on the offensive end. He set a weakside pin-in screen for his man as Green was trying to give Vando the same treatment, this opened up a shooter. We didn’t use that as AD missed a jumper on iso, but Vando crashed, stepping around Green actively trying to box him out. He grabbed the board in the middle of four Warriors and scored the putback layup. If you like basketball and you were frustrated by some of the inability of previous non-shooters on this team to honor the basketball gods and play the right way, this is beautiful ball. Back again on D on the other end, he then denied a drive as a free safety, got the board and quickly got it up court. The Warriors called a timeout shortly later. Shortly after this there was a sequence where Vando ball-faked on the perimeter and it drew a third defender, but he had already made his mind on the play and gave it up. Still, it looked like he put that in the back of his mind for later, because he shifted the D on another ball fake and it opened up for him to score. That forced another timeout. Be a star in your role. Shoot, that doesn’t even apply to just basketball. It’s beautiful to watch. He led the team with a +25 in an 8-point win. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-11 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 13 boards (2 offensive), 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a +25.

Beasley -- -- Everyone in the starting lineup scored in double digits. That’s kind of what we missed in the last game. No one needed to be dominant, just contribute. He sank just one three in this game (he splashed a wing three on the handoff from AD in the second half). Not a lot of threes taken, which is some credit to the Warriors staying with shooters. His three misses happened on two plays -- a chuck to beat the buzzer, so a tough one for anyone. The other two, he missed short, got it back and missed short again. The Lakers were running some sequences specifically with AD/Beasley. On one, AD curled into the paint while Beasley stretched out the D off ball (this resulted in an AD score as he got the pass), but it’s a tricky cover. On another, he cut off AD’s high post (might have been a split action that didn’t split), but AD hit him on the backcut for the score. Beasley also had another score early in the game taking a pitchout and attacking for an And-1 running bank. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-9 shooting (1-4 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a +16.

Brown -- -- He clocked big minutes for the team today with 41. The three shooting stood out. He buried a corner three in transition. Sank another three in the opposite corner on a swing pass. He sank a wing three when they sagged off. That was all in the first half. In the second half, he got a huge one in transition with 3:30 left in the game. The Warriors hit 18 threes and we needed to get some of that back, great job by Troy leading the way here while giving the team a strong effort on the boards and D. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting (4-7 from three) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists and 3 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a +10.

Reaves -- -- There was a sequence in the second quarter where he ran the two-man action with AD on the left side that was some beautiful ball. Reaves got the switch, then stepped back to stretch out the defense, blew past the big, drew the help and set up AD for the easy one. Great execution. There were stretches of this game where he gave the team multiple great plays in a row. First half, got the offensive foul on Klay on the perimeter, then he buried a wing three on the other end. Then, he followed that up with with a strong challenge on a three to force a miss and get a stop. In the second half, more stretches where he strung together good plays. This was especially key as AD sat and we needed to hold the line. Curry got things going and the Warriors were making a push, but Reaves gave the team some nice punch. He orchestrated the offense, found teammates and kept the flow. He led the team with 8 assists. Loved seeing Curry and Klay get irritated with Reaves drawing a foul on one of his pull-ups in the lane. They slowed it down on the replay and you can see how he hangs and gets contact with the arms of a defender. He does that a bit, along with getting guys to run up on him from the side. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-9 shooting (3-5 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +11.

Bamba -- -- He had a player land on the back of his leg as he was going after a defensive board in his first shift. He was clearly in pain and lost some mobility. That was the end of his night. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 offensive boards and 1 foul in 2 minutes. He was a +0.

Hachimura -- -- Rui. Where are you? Join the fight. He got his one score on a midrage pull-up. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards and no fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -13.

Walker IV -- -- Mixed results tonight. He made one of his five attempts from three. He swished a baseline jumper off an inbounds and then a pull-up from midrange for his other scores. There was a play in the second half where he was caught in tunnel vision. Reaves had just hit a big three. Next trip down in semi-transition, Reaves is wide open in the corner. Walker never saw him. That was one of those sequences where the crowd goes nuts if you find the hot shooter there. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-9 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 2 assists and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a -11.

Gabriel -- -- One score from our backup center (to go along with one score from our backup PF). He attacked from the corner, got around the defender on two long strides and scored a layup. We got to get better output from the bench. The minutes with Rui/Gabriel were painful. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 6 boards, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a -9.

Ham -- -- Key Moment: Late in the game, we needed a score, they went to AD on iso and he delivered twice in a row to go up 4 and 6. They played an excellent team game all night long, but let their best player carry them to the win. I did like the two-man action on the first post-up where the Lakers were able to get a switch (Reaves/AD two-man). Ideally, that’s what you want to set up. Get some action to get a switch and make it a higher percentage possession. In the second one, AD just got after Green and the help D for the score.

Key Substitution: Reaves was a baller tonight. Again. Kid is going to get paid. He was captaining that second unit and looked like he was in his comfort zone all night long. He’s doing all that on the offensive end, while running around screens and trying to ball deny on the other. Tough assignment but he was going toe to toe with the Warriors. He outplayed every bench player today on both teams. Wasn’t really close.

Key Stats: The team had 29 assists with just 7 turnovers. Super clean ball. They were running a lot of set actions tonight.

Thanks DB.

Did not get to watch alot; certainly did see that awesome baseline move on Green by AD.

Just utterly frustrated at injuries that keep coming. Now Mo. Can these guys catch a break with that? Would be nice to assess the team with their main rotation guys mostly healthy.

[PS...first!]

I was worried we weren’t going to win this one with Curry back. We played hard on both ends and it worked. We’re much better against teams without big shot blockers so that was in our favor.

Thanks DB!!!

Takes the sting out of the Minnesota loss a bit. Still kind of concerned they need Davis to be MVP Level to get wins. But without James and Russell, I suppose that's not surprising. Hopefully Dlo can go on Tuesday. Even without him it still feels like an upgrade not having Russ on the floor (AbS)

Thanks, DB!

Really great bounce back win, after the loss against the Wolves. Lakers still struggling a bit, with organization on offense. Hoping DLo helps to solve this, when he comes back (hopefully soon).

And, I'm extremely disappointed with Ham, and our coaching staff, in regards to Rui. Rui's been with the team the longest, out of all our new players. But, still gets only 1...maybe two...sets where he gets the ball in the post. Then he'll never see the ball again, unless it's a broke play, or a spot up 3. Neither being his strength. Yet, the Lakers will run MULTIPLE sets, throughout the game, trying to get Beasley open from three...

Come on, mannnnnn.

Thanks DB. Loving the AD-Vanderbilt front line, they are getting after it! Love to see AD dominating! And it’s unbelievable how good Reaves is playing. This team has some weapons and can play defense, and is a lot of fun to watch again.

Thanks DB! This does take the sting off a little from the Timberwolves loss.

Great games, particularly AD, Reaves, Vandy, Schroeder and Brown, all effective on both ends of the court.

Get Better Mo Bamba, lets hope this isn't yet another 2 week injury.

Come on back DLO! Time for a little revenge on Memphis.

DB,

Great write up as always!

This is how the Lakers need to win, win in the paint and they just need to get timely threes in the game.

Today it was Brown and Reeves knocking down some threes. Other games it might be Beasley and others contributing.

The players need to figure out how best to contribute every night no matter what the different lineups will be. Right now there is no Bron or DLO. Other nights it will be someone else.

When Bron comes back, Ham should always make sure one of them is on the court at all times.

Health will ALWAYS be an issue for both Bron and AD going forward as long as they are wearing Laker uniforms. That is just the way it is always going to be, after all, Bron is almost 40 and AD is AD!

Good Laker win and I am glad the ball is being passed around more than just Russ and Bron pounding the rock for 22 seconds of the shot clock!

They must still learn how to switch off on D and protect the perimeter and NOT leave an elite three shooting team with wide open looks. Let teams have twos and don't give up the threes. In the end, they can win with that formula.

I thought Rui would step up in Lebron's absence but he's clearly not that guy.
Reminds me of Devean George. Shows flashes of talent and potential... But just another guy.

Since Rui's stats are similar to what he had throughout his short NBA career, let's hope that he learns

Strengths (https://www.nbadraft.net/players/rui-hachimura/:
Strengths: Athletic forward and smart decision maker with a versatile skill set … Reliable, steady performer with a smooth playing style … Very team oriented player, who puts his team’s performance and winning over individual accolades … Excellent mid-range jump shooter, and continues to add range and consistency … Possesses great length with a 7’2 wingspan … An above average athlete with agility, good speed and solid leaping ability … Very good at running the floor and finishing on the break … A strong competitor. Plays the game with consistent focus and energy … Coming to the US three years ago and having never played AAU ball, he has always played a structured game … Being late to the game, he never really developed any bad habits … Has an excellent approach to the game and shows the desire to improve through hard work … Has developed his ball handling to the point where he can comfortably bring the ball up the floor, lead the break as well as take bigger opponents off the dribble from the perimeter … Shows good touch around the rim … Plays a very controlled game. Doesn’t gamble for steals or generally get out of control on drives … Really embraced the role of team leader and superstar in his junior year, ramping up his scoring output from 11.6 ppg to 19.6 ppg … Should be a solid scorer at the next level due to his ability to knock down open jumpshots consistently … Solid defender. Does a good job of contesting shots on the perimeter, utilizing his length and anticipation … Good feel for playing in the post. Uses leverage and positioning to his advantage … Understands how to use his body to create space and shield defenders off in order to get shots off … Strong, athletic body with good muscle tone … Scores well around the rim … Shows solid use of his left hand, both ball handling and finishing with dunks and shots around the rim … Has textbook shooting mechanics, squares up, quick release with follow through … A (decent) 74% free throw shooter and and should be able to improve that over time to be an 80+% FT shooter at the next level … Shows solid leadership skills … Confident personality. Rises to the challenge as he did against Duke in Maui, in their early season match up, leading Gonzaga to the win over Zion Williamson and Duke to capture the Maui Jim’s Maui Invitational championship … Has put in a lot of work in the weight room and has a very solid frame with good core and leg strength … Great conditioning. Gonzaga often uses him to spearhead their press and he never appears winded or runs out of energy late in games … Naturally athletic frame with good muscle tone …

Weaknesses: Needs to continue to improve his 1-on-1 skills and ability to create off the dribble, in order to enhance his shooting and scoring ability … Must continue to polish his feel for the game … Has a good wingspan, but at 6-8 is a bit small at the power forward position … Not a perfect fit at either forward position, though he could work at the next level as a match up, small ball four if he continues to get stronger and expands his shooting range … Doesn’t possess the fastest first step to get by smaller defenders … Must become a better passer and ball handler and add the ability to create pull up jumpers in rhythm … Being late to the game, (playing against high level competition) there are times that he looks a little lost when plays break down. He has moments where he makes shots that look unorthodox or shots that are off by a lot. His lack of feel at times is due to coming to the game late … At times will challenge bigger players and go into the teeth of the defense and force up contested low percentage shots, or get his shot blocked … Only 7% of his shots were from three point range, though he did hit a very solid clip at 45% … Should look to expand his shooting range (to NBA 3) and make the three point shot a bigger part of his arsenal … Not the most physical of players at the 4 position. Could improve on his rebounding at 6.5 rebound per game … Struggles at times to keep a handle on the ball, allowing it to get poked loose. Should look to strengthen his hands and wrists with weights … Struggles some to limit opponents scoring. At times gets beat off the dribble by small er quicker players …
