Make Your Damn Freethrows... The Lakers lost by 1 at the buzzer. They shot 19-31 from the freethrow line, including AD missing one with 6.7 seconds left.

The Lakers led by 4 heading into the second quarter. Midway through the second quarter, they fell apart. Turnovers piled up (5 in the quarter), they missed freethrows at a high clip and now found themselves down 9.

Late in the third, they chipped the lead down to 1 with 1:30 left. About to take the lead, they had Beasley pushing out the break and he fumbled the ball away for a 4-point switch. Throw in a couple of Mavs threes and the Lakers were quickly down 9 again heading into the fourth.

They battled back. Schröder came up with big scores. Wenyen was hustling to get the Lakers extra possessions. AD scored a few times. Reaves sparked the crowd with a drive for the corner for an And-1. They turned the game around and led by 5.

With under a minute left, Reaves had the ball in the corner with the shotclock low and swung through to draw FTs. He had been struggling from the line himself, but made these two.

On defensive up 4, AD fouled a three shooter with 7 seconds left on a close out to give up three FTs. With 6.7 seconds, he was fouled, made just one of two and the Lakers were now up just 2.

On the inbounds, the Mavs got the ball to Kyrie, the Lakers sent help, forcing him to pass. But AD, sagged way too far off his man, gave up a wide open three at the buzzer. Ball game.

The Lakers fell 111-110.

Davis -- -- He’s had problems knocking down freethrows under pressure this season. Yet again, more issues there. The defense late on the perimeter, though, killed the Lakers. That foul for three, then giving up the open three. Painful. He went 8-11 from the line, which is fine, but when the game is on the line, you’ve got to knock those ones down. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 9-14 shooting (0-1 from three, 8-11 from the line) to go with 10 boards (3 offensive), 3 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +1.

Russell -- -- Kyrie vs. Russell. They have been linked as a possible decision this offseason. So fans are naturally going to look at the head-to-head match up in this one. Neither covered each other defensively. So it was more about the offensive impact. Russell started off well moving the ball and setting up teammates for scores or FTs. That part of his game was working great early and he finished with 11 assists and no turnovers. Some nice pocket passes and reads. Really strong there early on. Scoring wise, though, he couldn’t connect from the perimeter, including missing a couple big ones late. He was tapped on his last one with about 15 seconds left in the game. A cold 0-6 from three and a very inefficient 11 points on 17 shots. He was MIA in the fourth quarter of this one. Meanwhile, Kyrie dominated the night with 38 points on the other end. In the spotlight tonight, one shined, one didn’t in this one. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-17 shooting (0-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 11 assists, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +6.

Vanderbilt -- -- We benched him for Wenyen in that fourth. The Mavs were definitely sagging off Vando and plugging the paint. There was a play in the second half where DLo tried driving and Vando’s man was there waiting. Vando didn’t help by cutting into the driving lane to help that. But he’s doing that because otherwise, he’d be open for three while they take away the paint. In the playoffs, defending the Vandolorian, this is the way. Wenyen gave the Lakers a bit more size, length and pressure on that rim. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -14.

Beasley -- -- Like Russell, stone cold from three. Beasley only took three in this one, though. Still, he missed wide open ones. He did a good job attacking the paint for runners and short ones to get some points. Defensively, it was an adventure at times. It’s tough when you’ve got to hide him. He’ll get hunted. We went with Reaves and Dennis to close. Even Beasley missed his only FT attempt. Sigh. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-9 shooting (0-3 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -8.

Brown -- -- We had him defending Kyrie to start. Why? Because you have DLo and Beasley as the other options. Late in the game, Brown was on the bench as Dennis took over the defensive role. Brown hit a couple of threes in the first half, but wasn’t a factor. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting from three to go with 1 steal and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -13.

Reaves -- -- He had 8 points on 3-4 shooting in the first half. His one miss rattled out from three. He also hit a halfcourt heave just a second after the first quarter clock expired that didn’t count. Some great ball from Reaves in that fourth quarter. He powered through an And-1 on a drive from the fourth quarter and was pumped. The crowd got into it on that one. Of course, he missed the FT. Later he’d take the lead on a probe from the wing to hit a short runner with 7 seconds left. He’d miss a tech FT in this one, as well. But he did make a couple big ones with 50 seconds left that he manufactured on a swing through. He led the team with a +10. Somehow, his missed FTs (6-8) felt especially painful because he’s one of our most reliable players. Defensively, he got in a great block on Kyrie in that fourth quarter. He also rotated to deflect a pass in crunch time. That felt like a potential game-winning play, but nope. Glad we got him the 32 minutes in this one. It’s a bit annoying when he doesn’t get that when he’s clearly earning it. Efficient night. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-8 shooting (0-1 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a +10.

Hachimura -- -- Nice to see him drop a couple of threes. He also got some iso scores to get double digits. They said he was putting some extra work in on that three ball. Good to see it pay off tonight. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-6 shooting (2-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 steals and no fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +2.

Schröder -- -- He battled in that fourth. He had the Kyrie assignment on one end and was working the offense on the other. With Russell taking a backseat, Dennis seemed like our lead guard in crunch time. Great job hitting some big ones down the stretch. If he could take something back, I think he had two lob passes he couldn’t connect on to AD. We had run a play on ATO where they did team up. But late, Dennis was just off the mark on another ATO lob and AD couldn’t finish it. This was a game of inches and we gave up a lot of them tonight. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 7-13 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +6.

Gabriel -- -- Got to hit your FTs, though, my man. He came up big numerous times tonight. A couple of his offensive boards led to Laker threes. Those are big second-chance buckets. In the fourth, though, he drew FTs twice and made just 1-4. Make a couple more of those and it’s a different game. We’re then highlighting plays like picking his man at the three line and pushing it up to setup AD for FTs as game changers. Just a beast on the offensive glass tonight. This is how he needs to always play, aside from the missed FTs. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting (3-6 from the line) to go with 11 boards (8 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +5.

Ham -- -- Key Moment: A lot of this game, AD had to play out high on those screens to help the D. They Mavs were pulling him from the paint and, perhaps, that just played into those last 15 seconds of perimeter D. AD getting that horrible foul from three on a challenge. You just can’t do that. The shot was already out of his man’s hands and he ran into the body. Just so sloppy. Then, he sagged off too much in the paint and didn’t get out there for the deathblow.

Key Substitution: Good job on switching things up to go up bigger with Wenyen in the fourth. There was a stretch there, even with AD on the floor, where we struggled to secure that defensive glass. Wenyen helped shore that up, but also gave the Lakers some boost on offense.

Key Stats: The Lakers shot 7-13 from the line in the first half and 12-17 in the second half. Give me just one or two more, please. The 63% FT shooting is awful. The Lakers hurt themselves there. The three shooting was also way off. The Lakers made just 5-20. The Mavs sank 16-34. Just a huge difference there.

Coach’s Challenge: Dallas challenged AD stepping in for a charge. The call was overturned. However, it looked like AD was almost shoved into the foul by the Mavs. But Dallas got the And-1 and AD his third foul with 10 minutes left in the third. Up 4 with 1:55 left in the game, Ham used his challenge. Kyrie attacked and Gabriel went vertical to get a stop, but they called a foul on him. Challenge was unsuccessful, kind of bogus touch foul if anything. It cut the lead to 2.

What’s amazing is how despite how many of these chokejobs this team has had this year, they never learn from any of them.

Pacers
Mavericks x 2
Celtics x 2
Blazers
Pelicans
Clippers x 2
76ers

Thanks DB.

Maddening loss. Just SMH.

But, can we really say this team has not done this time and again? Nope. Just look above to what other posters have pointed to. They are just an inconsistent team. This is further compounded by the fact the team has injuries to two guys (LBJ and Mo) and the team has no replacement for either.

There's a decent probability they still make the play in, under .500, if that makes anyone feel better. But I think we just need to come to grips with the very likely fact that we won't know if this club can be better until next season.

I'm a pretty big AD fan, but he almost singlehandedly cost us this game tonight. He has choked a few times this year in close games by missing free throws, but this choke was just egregious.

Be that as it may, it's hard to judge this team without everyone healthy and in uniform. DLO has struggled the last three games, and given how much his shooting percentages have fluctuated from year to year, you have to wonder if he can maintain the very strong efficiency he has shown throughout this season overall.

PAINFUL Game

This team rises and sinks with AD & "Nails"

AD's foolishly fouling a 3pt shot and sinking too far into "No Man's Land" on the last play (was he thinking that Kyrie would take the final shot, no matter what?).

Reeves and AD missing free throws, what other players would we want in that situation and does this scenario sound familiar???

Ham is trying to find consistent outside shooters. Amazingly, it seems as if Rui is the most consistent - not the most prolific.

We have seen this team continaully and relentlessly compete, a good thing.
This team has placed AD and Reeves is key positions to influence games

Team has lost two games they should have won (Houston and Dallas).

With LBJ out till the end of the season, according to reports, will LBJ play in the playoffs?

This team has to learn the lesson on how to win close games

Sidebar for Next Season
Rob will have to recognize that LBJ and AD will continuously miss significatn portions of every season till the end of their contracts.

Having a roster where LBJ/AD are not required to play 35+ MPG every game would be a good start and requirement.

IMHO - Having the guard tandem of DLo and Schroeder is better than acquiring Kyrie while using the rest of the monies to pay for the players on this roster plus whatever needs they might have.

Having a top heavy team featuring AD/LBJ/Kyrie with DLo or Schroeder leaving and possibly Austin - this is a no-brainer, let Kyrie find another team that needs star power that comes with so much unnecessary drama.

Maybe watching how the Dubs are using Drammond could be considered

Opposing teams have obvioulsy had time to scout this Lakers team and now it is time for Ham to put in effective counters

Thanks, DB!

These losses down the stretch definitely hurt. You always want to see your team win. But, I'm not as upset about this loss as I would normally be. While the Lakers still have a shot to get in the play-in/playoffs, I would be ok even if they didn't. My biggest complaint about this team for the longest time has been the inability to construct a functioning roster. The Lakers have done that! Even better, it's a fun roster! So, I'm extremely happy for our future, which dulls the pain of losing.

The challenge will to be in keeping most of this roster intact for next season. And, my personal pick for player "on-the-outside-looking-in" is Beasley. I've tried to be patient. But, he's been bad. If he's not scorching on offense, he's a net negative on the floor. When DLo is cold from three, he can at least provide other benefits for the team, and he's a neutral defender at worst. If Beasley is cold, he provides no offers no other intangibles for the team, and he's bad defensively. It forces the Lakers to play 4 on 5.

I hear people say that Beasley's worth can't be determined yet, because LeBron isn't back. If that's true, then that in itself is a problem. At this stage in his career, it's unlikely that LeBron is going to be able to play a full NBA regular season. And, if Beasley is only effective when LeBron is available...? Of course, LeBron raises the ceiling of the team, when's he's healthy. But, if a player's effectiveness is almost totally reliant on someone else...that's a problem.

It's quite apparent that Ham is in sink-or-swim mode, with Beasley. So, he'll continue to get the nod, over Christie or Lonnie, no matter what. I'm resigned to that, so I'm done harping about coaching changes for this season. I just hope we see more growth from Ham going into next year. And, a better option over Beasley provided, during the coming off season.

The problem isn’t dlo. It’s the expectations. I get ice in the veins but people act like he is some upper tier pg that you expect to make big plays. He’s not but he can. The only expectations should be

- limit turnovers- check
- find open guys - check
- try on defense- mmm sometimes
- hit open shots- check most of the time

He is not and has never elevated a team. I suspect next game will be better. We as a team played hard but failed at the fundamentals

I am an Ohio State fan and followed DLo in college. If you look at his averages he is pretty good but in big games against top tier team or during the conference championships he comes up small. Same in NBA. Gets in the playoffs with the Nets and again does not show up. I get he has no fear and will take the big shot when needed. But making it when the season is on the line or you need a win to get to the next round and he shrinks.

That was so hard to watch. I know everyone likes to assign blame after a loss like this and there is plenty of blame to point out for sure. I keep thinking of the poll we have on Lakersground on which guard we would want as our starting pg if the cost was the same. I was fairly surprised that D-LO was winning big in that poll. D-LO is a nice player and one we need to keep as we don’t have a good way replace him, but it’s silly to think he’s even close to bringing what Kyrie can. D-Lo is more of a good/great regular season guard, where Kyrie is an elite playoff guard and one of the best closers in the game. It really showed in this game. And at the end you could see that D-Lo was deferring to Schroder because Schroder is better against a pressure defense in a close game (not great, just better).

We should have never let the game be so close so it’s not all his fault, but AD really cost us the game at the end. First he takes like a 20ft contested jumper (a low percentage shot) on a must score possession. Then fouls a three point shooter on a long range shot that more than likely would have missed. Only to follow up with a missed free-throw (you could see that coming). And at the end he drops into the paint instead of staying with the 3 point shooter that could, and did, win the game. Ugh.

I don’t even have words for copious missed free-throws. These guys do this for a living, that’s just unacceptable.

On the good side, Reeves was awesome, Schroder and Gabriel gave it everything they had. I have no idea how Dennis has the energy to play full court pressure defense against players like Kyrie and then still be aggressive on offense.

If my memory is not failing me we’ve lost 3 of the last 4 games. Ouch! Not good when every game was a must win.

One of his problems is how smooth he is and people equate that to being better than he actually is. He imho is not the problem since being here.

He will only be a problem if overpaid
