William Friedkin, Director of The Exorcist and The French Connection Dies at 87

One of the major filmmakers of the '70's. TFC was iconic from Gene Hackman's performance to the awesome car chase through New York under the iconic El Train tracks. [EDIT: just noticed I had a brain fade; It wasn't San Francisco, that was Bullit]

And of course The Exorcist is a horror classic that terrified us kids from the '60's who will never forget the sound of Tubular Bells.

I have to hail Mr. Friedkin, who directed one of my favorite comedies ever...The Exorcist. (I'm only half-joking.) That movie is hilarious to me. I'm one of those people that doesn't think there's a truly scary "horror" movie, but then again I'm afraid of spiders and most insects, so there's that.

Love his movies. Exorcist and TFC are of course legendary, but wanted to give some love to Sorcerer. What a wild ride—poorly received when it came out but much better appreciated today. Cruising, To live and die in LA, and Killer Joe are all worth a watch as well.

His last movie is coming out this year—The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. Must see now (was before, but is now, too).

When weighed against where horror has gone since then, for sure. But to a 12 year-old watching it when it came out . . .

I suppose that's a fair point! I know I was at least 18 when I watched it for the first time.

To live and die in la is one of my all time favorites (fwiw, Peterson was in Manhunter around the same time which is another of my faves).
