In all honesty if Redick is utilizing Wood correctly, Hayes could be used as the 3rd backup big. It could easily go like this.

DLO / Vincent
MaxC / Reaves
Vando / Knecht
LBJ / Hachimura
AD / Wood

Max C, AD and Vando with the starters for the defense. They have 3 primary scorers in DLO, AD and LBJ, Max is there for the defense and the 3s, Vando is there for the defense and the slashing

Reaves and Hachimura can handle the offense of the bench, Vincent can have his hot/cold spells, Knecht can get into the flow of the offense, Wood can be a third primary scorer with the bench if JJ uses him right as he's very capable.

It allows everyone to get into the feel of things but also has enough scoring/defense with the starters and enough scoring in general with our bench even if our bench lacks defense outside of Gabe.

Hayes would come in whenever someone else on the bench is struggling or not doing what they're supposed to.

I love the defensive concept to balance the starters but the AD/Rui/LBJ/AR/Dlo starting line up showed what they could do regarding winning games last year on the court so I wouldn’t want to pull another HAMstring. The way things were going it looked as if those starters could have competed for a ship with better bench support and better coaching. Dollars to production doesn’t always correlate but there’s a reason those starters are the 5 highest paid Lakers as they are the best 5 so far.

MaxC/Vando looks like it could turn out to be the right move but they have to earn the start with actual play on the court and not be granted it by looking at hypothetical wins on paper.

When reasonably possible, I expect the Lakers to go after a ship like it can’t be denied. I haven’t seen a completely committed effort by the GM for the last 2 off seasons nor the last 2 trade deadlines. What is going on?
