All scouting reports say he rarely passes the ball and has an absurdly low stock rate. I don’t think he offers much of anything aside from shooting. But he is an excellent shooter and can make contested threes.
Hinson’s game and potential lie in his ability to be a prolific scorer at all three levels, though his improvements as a shooter won’t go unnoticed, as he can be a very effective stretch-four due to his shooting range. His 6-foot-8 frame suggests he might be a bit undersized to play power forward at the next level but that length and frame suggest he shouldn’t have problems guarding NBA wings and perimeter players. He’s a better ball-handler than he’s given credit for, however, his game doesn’t come without flaws. He’s not the best passer, and while his ball-handling skills are decent, he uses them to create for himself rather than for others. He also has room to improve on defense, especially in terms of effort. _________________ Lakers need to build a freaking team !

Mhmmm. That is why I compare him to essentially a Malik Beasley but Hachimura in terms of defensive potential / effort.
Definitely a good get and HOPEFULLY he performs well in Summer League and earns a roster spot on the team. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

Doesn't sound like an NBA player. _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points."

That's also mainly to due with his role on the team which was to be a moving shooter and primary scorer for the team. The team was much better with him than without him.
He won't be a point guard or a point forward that is for sure though. But we don't need him to be. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

FWIW, No Ceilings has a decent write up on him, essentially saying the same stuff I posted above:
Quote:
What Makes Him So Special?
Blake Hinson is an absolute bomber. He shoots and drains threes at a preposterous clip. So far this year, he’s launched 14.8 threes per 100 possessions, and he’s connected on 43.8% of them. That is a similar level of volume and efficiency that other three-point specialists like Sam Hauser and Corey Kispert posted during their final pre-draft seasons. As if those numbers aren’t enough, the eye test takes things to a different level. Hinson has beyond logo range and will stretch a defense to its limits.
…
So, What’s the Hold Up?
Outside of his shooting, it’s tough to point to another element of Blake Hinson’s game and say, “yup, that’s NBA-ready tomorrow.” He is truly a specialist. His rebounding is okay for his size. His handle and passing profile are run-of-the-mill for an NBA prospect. He’s also a pretty poor defender. Hinson isn’t particularly long, laterally quick, or vertically explosive, which could give him issues at the point of attack at the next level… His 1.0 STL% and 0.0 BLK% on the year are also dreadful metrics far below what most wings produce in college. Having zero blocks is a red flag even for a point guard prospect, let alone a dude who is listed at 6’8”. He’ll also be 24.5 years old on draft night
…
Projection
The knocks are clear—Blake Hinson is an old prospect, and he’s one-dimensional. I get it. But my goodness, can this man shoot a basketball. Plus, he’s not a shrimp! …A draftable grade is likely out of the question given the severity of his flaws, but I’d strongly consider him for a two-way contract if he can start to show more complementary elements to his game. He’s definitely worth an Exhibit-10 flier at a bare minimum.
Guys that have only 1 skill aren’t valued anymore in the league. There’s a reason Buddy Hield only makes 2/20. This guy isn’t a switchable defender and can only do 1 thing. I’d be shocked if he makes any team in the NBA

They're still pretty valued in the league. You just don't depend upon them as the main guys. Redick was one of those kinds of specialists and he'd still do fine in the league.
If your 1 elite skillset is shooting threes you have a place in the league. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

He’s supposed to be pretty heavy footed and doesn’t have great athleticism, so probably not good. But he’s got size and he can clearly shoot, so if his shot can transfer to the NBA against nba defenders (unlike Swider’s), he’ll have a role in the league.
He's more athletic than Swider, has a better handle, can attack off the dribble and closeouts to get to the basket.
Those are all things Swider struggled with because he didn't have that first step quickness or even ability to attack on closeouts or get past people. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

memba when guys were clamoring to get matt thomas back? lol
So floor is Swider and ceiling is Jimmer Fredette _________________ “The main goal for the Lakers is to win a championship. All I care about, all we care about, is to raise another banner in the rafters.“
He’s shooting like Cole Swider did in SL so far. Here’s hoping it translates into actual games better than Cole.
Yea Cole shot 53% from deep in Summer League and still isn't a legit NBA player. Have to contribute in other areas of the game. _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points."
Swider's issue wasn't that he could only shoot.
His problem was he had no quickness nor ability to attack off the dribble to punish closeouts and was extremely slow footed and had a very slow first step.
Hinson is a movement shooter, a spot up shooter. He has a better handle, more athleticism, can come off screens and attack off screens and dribble past closeouts and get to the basket.

They are not the same.
Why do you think they both went undrafted? How often do undrafted players become rotation players? _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points."

Multi year college players. For some reason scouts think 24 year old rookies are "too old" but they salivate over Euroleague players in their late 20s and early 30s :3
Reaves told teams not to draft him because he and his agent felt the Lakers were the best spot for him. Swider and Hinson went undrafted because they're extremely one dimensional and haven't flashed enough upside in any other aspects of the game. _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points."
