SACRAMENTO —
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday declared a state of emergency in California over the spread of the monkeypox virus in order to “bolster the state’s vaccination efforts.”
“California is working urgently across all levels of government to slow the spread of monkeypox, leveraging our robust testing, contact tracing and community partnerships strengthened during the pandemic to ensure that those most at risk are our focus for vaccines, treatment and outreach,” Newsom said in statement.
Monkeypox is a rare disease similar to smallpox, though usually milder. It is largely spreading among men who have sex with men as well as transgender and nonbinary people, though health officials warn that anyone can contract the virus through direct contact with infectious sores, scabs or body fluids or by touching clothing and bedding used by a person with the virus.
Nearly 800 cases have been confirmed in California, according to the California Department of Public Health’s most recent data as of Thursday. The state reported that 98.3% of those cases were confirmed in men, the majority of whom identify as part of the LGBTQ community. |

I think it's the right thing to do. Though not as easily transferred as COVID-19 it alerts communities most affected. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Not really. California is filled with anti-masking, no vax mandate idiots. It was the horrible response to COVID protocols by so many in California citizens that made COVID worse than it needed to be and prolonged the need for them, thus also making the variants tougher to battle. That is why this move was necessary. _________________ HARRIS WALZ 2024 |

According to the CDC, Monkeypox transmission requires prolonged, intimate, skin-to-skin contact. |

Which only goes so far if a large section of the constituency isn't cooperative. Hence the bolded. _________________ HARRIS WALZ 2024 |

You're right. Thankfully it looks like they have learned. Imagine if that recall went through and some lowlife Republican got the position.. they would spend their time blaming gays for Monkeypox and do nothing to help. |

Monkeypox is definitely not a "gay disease" and shouldn't be looked at it that way, but right now, as in the original post you shared, 98.3% of cases are in that community (not just California -- worldwide) and it's because of specific activities.
Hopefully by declaring this health emergency, more resources will be able to be devoted to educational and other endeavors to help stem the tide of transmission.

I'm concerned that there are other ways this is spreading that are not yet known or well understood (trying to make sense of how the 4 toddler aged children were exposed to it otherwise). |

The response seems guided. Where the arrow points should be most concerned. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Maybe I'm just naive but what's the conclusion? Airborne a la Covid and respiratory illnesses? |

It’s happening up here in northeast, we’ve been back to gowning and face masking on top of the N95 since last month. Swapping about 1-2 every shift but so far, uncomfortable looking but not super sick. Stay vigilant, don’t be an a hole aka go get checked if you feel off/has a rash |

Monkeypox spreads in a few ways.
Monkeypox can spread to anyone through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact, including:
Direct contact with monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with monkeypox.
Touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels), and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox.
Contact with respiratory secretions.
This direct contact can happen during intimate contact, including:
Oral, anal, and vaginal sex or touching the genitals (penis, testicles, labia, and vagina) or anus (butthole) of a person with monkeypox.
Hugging, massage, and kissing.
Prolonged face-to-face contact.
Touching fabrics and objects during sex that were used by a person with monkeypox and that have not been disinfected, such as bedding, towels, fetish gear, and sex toys.
A pregnant person can spread the virus to their fetus through the placenta.
It’s also possible for people to get monkeypox from infected animals, either by being scratched or bitten by the animal or by preparing or eating meat or using products from an infected animal.
A person with monkeypox can spread it to others from the time symptoms start until the rash has fully healed and a fresh layer of skin has formed. The illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks.
Scientists are still researching:
If the virus can be spread when someone has no symptoms
How often monkeypox is spread through respiratory secretions, or when a person with monkeypox symptoms might be more likely to spread the virus through respiratory secretions.
Whether monkeypox can be spread through semen, vaginal fluids, urine, or feces.
