Aug 29, 2024:
Columbus Blue Jackets' player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau were killed in car-bike crash. They were in NJ to attend their sisters’ wedding on Friday.

July 4, 2021:
Columbus Blue Jackets' player Matiss Kivlenieks was killed in a fireworks accident. He was in MI to attend a wedding of one of the coach’s daughter.

March 18, 2002:
Brittanie Nichole Cecil died when struck by a puck at a Columbus Blue Jackets game. This was the first and only fan death in NHL history.

Here’s the story:

Blue Jackets' Johnny Gaudreau, brother killed in car-bike crash

Columbus Blue Jackets winger Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were killed Thursday when they were struck by a vehicle while riding bicycles, New Jersey State Police said in a release Friday.

Johnny Gaudreau was 31; Matthew was 29.

According to police, a driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee hit two "pedalcyclists," identified as the Gaudreaus, from behind while trying to pass an SUV on the right that had moved over to make way for the two cyclists. Police, who responded to the scene in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, at 8:19 p.m., said both Gaudreaus suffered fatal injuries.

The driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and has been charged with two counts of death by auto, police said. They said the investigation is ongoing.

Both brothers, who were New Jersey natives, had been in the area to be groomsmen in their sister Katie's wedding that was scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia.

Gaudreau's death is the latest off-ice tragedy to strike the Blue Jackets in the past few years. Goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died in July 2021 when he was struck in the chest by a firework while attending the wedding of then-Blue Jackets goaltending coach Manny Legace's daughter in Michigan.

What an eery coincidence. This team must be cursed.

And the story of the fan being killed:

Quote:
Brittanie Nichole Cecil (March 20, 1988 – March 18, 2002) was a hockey fan who died from injuries suffered when a puck was deflected into the stands and struck her in the left temple at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 16, 2002.

It was the first and currently only fan fatality in the NHL's history. Because of Cecil's death, the league implemented mandatory netting at both ends of the rink in every arena at the beginning of the next NHL season in 2002–03 to protect spectators from errant pucks.

Cecil was watching the Columbus Blue Jackets play the Calgary Flames on March 16, 2002, on tickets received as an early gift from her father for her 14th birthday.

Wow all 3 deaths involved some type of special occasion, either a wedding or a birthday. Eery.

I'm not a hockey fan but this is wild to read.

There's definitely something off about this franchise.

This is really sad. I can't imagine the pain of their parents losing both of their sons in the same day. RIP
