Early October... Just going to cover a few quick things as the team was without Bron, AD, Vando and Wood. (And I got back home late tonight.)
This was the first game after three practices, so not a lot of time to put things together. There was quite a bit of deep bench/G-League action and some awkwardly small lineups out of necessity.
The team trailed early, went on a run in the second quarter behind Reaves. They caught the TWolves in the second half, but struggled with size, turnovers and getting stops. The game got away from them midway through the fourth and the Lakers fell 124-107.
The Lakers need some guys who didn’t contribute as much last year to step up. Let’s look at a few of those who could help improve the team.
Christie -- -- “He’s going to be very valuable for us this year,” Redick said. His energy and hustle all around the court will be vital around Bron. We need young legs crashing glass, pressuring the ball and being first to loose balls. He looks stronger. They had him on the ball defending the point of attack most of the time. That’s what we want around Russell and Reaves, as well. He’s put in the work since he got here. Should have been out there more last year. They won’t keep him off the court this season, especially with his physicality and shooting. “Max is an old soul. He’s wise and he’s mature and he takes this very seriously,” Redick said. JJ said he appreciated how hard he always competes. He needs to give us more than Prince and Reddish. I think he will. His rebounding will be huge in that regard, no doubt. Prince made a lot of quick decisions out there, which Max has had some issues with. He’s looking more sure of himself. Looking forward to seeing him get strong minutes this year. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-9 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a +0.
Knecht -- -- His game translates. “He knows who he is as a player,” Redick said. He’s finishing over and around guys at the rim. He worked into midrange jumpers off set plays. There were multiple play calls where he looked like the primary target, often as a three shooter. Defensively, we played small because of our size that is sidelined, so he wasn’t tested a lot. A couple fouls where players were able to get contact on the drive. He did, however, block a drive staying with a smaller, faster player. That showed off his athleticism. Redick said he’s got to compete defensively to get court time and liked the work tonight. Overall, I love the confidence coming out of the gates in October. “He’s in midseason game shape,” Redick said of Knecht’s conditioning. He’ll have a lot of gravity once they get their schemes cleaned up and flowing. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-13 shooting (2-7 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -13.
Vincent -- -- Some good moments out there, knocking down from distance or getting to the rim. Very much playing SG versus any PG actions. I like the level of competing he and Max can give on the defensive end. I think we’ll see the two of them giving the team some full court pressure on opponents’ guards to set the tone defensively when they are out there. Only a few games from him last year, so this is one of those areas we need contribution. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-6 shooting (2-4 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 turnover and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a +1.
Hood-Schifino -- -- Last year was one trainwreck after another. This game he looked much more steady. He made several good passes. He hit from the midrange with confidence. We missed him in the summer, but it was good to see the growth. Let’s see if he can string together some positive performances. I’d be surprised if he contributed a lot this year, but there has been some good chatter out of practice. Hopefully, we see that translate. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-9 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 4 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -7.
Redick -- -- Perhaps the biggest area we could see improvement this year is just from coaching Watching Knecht being used correctly (versus what we saw in the summer league with the remnants of Ham’s offense) kind of showed the new offensive thinking out there. The staff had some misdirections and extra screens to open up shooters. There were some plays off horns sets with cross screens, flowing into additional screens. We saw purpose with the two-man action with Hayes that forced help D off shooters. It was certainly noticeable not having Bron out there and our lack of playmaking ball handlers. They’ll make AD more of a hub in the offense to help with some of that, as well, when he plays. Good initial outing for what it was… Our hands were a bit tied with the lack of size available. Not much coaching can do about that… Just three practices and a walk through. “Overall I thought our guys played with the right intent,” Redick said…

Funny, I had a thought about a "Five Guys" review for this game as just a summary for five of the more interesting or impactful people of the night. Viola! |

Maybe it was a bad shooting night, but the Lakers didn't appear to have any Shot Makers that can create "one-on-one."
Knecht and DLo showed flashes, not worried about AR, Max showed some fluidity.
As J.J. is implementing his defensive schemes, we will see which players hae embraced J.J.'s passion for details.
Maybe Bronny can embrace the role DS had in the past as the defensive players always in the opposition jersey, that can play along Vincent and Vando (when he is on the court). |

Thanks DB.
I watched the first half and it was, in some ways, a replay of last year. Poor shooting by the Lakers (2 of 14 from 3 point land at one point) and well as poor defense (without AD). But as you said, only three practices as well as trying to implement new schemes.
The game did emphasize the lack of size among back up bigs as Reid had is way with Rui and Hayes.

Max looked good, Knecht looked like a rookie trying to play in the league and JHS had some nice moments. The game reinforced the concept that Reaves should dribble the ball as little as possible. The Lakers obviously need bigs, I’m jealous that someone like Garza is the Wolves 3rd big man, he is better than anyone we have except AD. Bronny is Lebron’s son, that is his claim to fame. I’m bummed that the Wolves drafted 10 spots behind the Lakers and got the better player. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

This is bait for anyone wondering. _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points." |

I may do that more this season (and may steal your Five Guys line). I was able to come home late, watch the game and still get something out. Much easier to pull off when pressed for time. And doing a write up for everyone in a preseason game is a pain sometimes with deep bench. Plus when you do every player you have to take notes because there are guys who are tough to recall what impact they made here or there throughout a game. Much easier to cover five of the more interesting story lines. |

I think the "Five Guys" solution is great. You get to get to the point and we get to enjoy your writing.

Good to hear Max is out there hustling and having an impact at this wee early stage. Would love it if he becomes a solid 2 way player.
It'll be interesting to see how fast Knecht gets up to NBA speed, and whether he's able to incorporate some defense into his game as well. 5 turnovers - meh - first preseason game for a rookie. Bad for the final score, which doesn't matter, good learning opportunity with court time, and that actually does matter. Good to see he's scoring, 16 pts on 13 shots isn't bad. |
