| I heard Mark Cuban mention that teams over the tax limit cannot be recipients of a sign and trade and may have some limitation on how they can use a TPE. That ring a bell to anyone? |

One question Larry, when you have the time. It reads:
Starting in 2013-14, the team cannot receive a player in a sign-and-trade if they have used the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception (see question number 25) that season.
Does that mean a team who is a taxpayer can do a S&T if they don't use the mini MLE that offseason?
I found this one as well, they really go after the teams paying tax:
Non-Taxpaying Teams
Outgoing salary Maximum incoming salary
$0 to $9.8 million 150% of the outgoing salary, plus $100,000
$9.8 million to $19.6 million The outgoing salary plus $5 million
$19.6 million and up 125% of the outgoing salary, plus $100,000
Taxpaying Teams
Outgoing salary Maximum incoming salary
Any 125% of the outgoing salary, plus $100,000
That middle salary range rule really favors teams not paying tax.

No, see the bullet prior to the one you quoted. (But note that the union negotiated an extra $4 million in wiggle room, so it's not based on whether the team is above the tax level, it's based on whether the team is above the "apron" -- the point $4 million above the tax level).

Yes, the idea was to add extra penalties for taxpaying teams, beyond the financial penalties. I talk about it here:

| Larry, is it feasible for the Lakers to trade for Kevin Love BEFORE the draft? I know that the 7th pick's salary counts for nothing in a trade. The only possible way on espn trade machine is Nash, Sacre, Marshall and Brooks for Love. Are the Lakers able to trade Marshall and Brooks even though they have team options? Can the Lakers even include Nick Young in a trade, even though he has a player option for next season? |
