1. Once Indispensable, Pau Gasol Awaits Fate
By J.A. Adande | ESPN.com
LOS ANGELES -- Let's start this with a flashback to simpler, happier times, like Walt and Jesse cooking in the RV again in the opening scene of Breaking Bad's climactic "Ozymandias" episode.

Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom are sitting at a news conference table in the old Orlando Arena, NBA champions for the first time. Odom felt compelled to remind the media of how those two came to be Lakers in the first place.

"First of all, I got traded for Shaq," Odom said, "He got traded for Kwame Brown."

Gasol is walking out of the Lakers locker room after his team lost a home game to the Milwaukee Bucks. Yeah, those Milwaukee Bucks. The team with the worst record in the NBA. This is the opposite end of the sports emotion spectrum from the euphoria Gasol felt after winning that first championship. His eyes are watery, his words have an added coating as he struggles through an upper-respiratory infection.

It's time to talk about trades, and this time there's absolutely nothing to laugh about.

Gasol could be on the move again, once more for a player whose greatest appeal is his expiring contract. Andrew Bynum's contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers is what some call a "super-expiring" contract, because it isn't fully guaranteed. The Lakers can acquire Bynum, waive him and get rid of the remaining half of his $12.5 million contract -- saving themselves $20 million including luxury tax expenditures in the process.

"It's not easy," Gasol said. "As much as I'm used to it after three years of several [years of potential trades], it's not easy."

Brandon Knight's career night leads Bucks past injury-ravaged Lakers

UPDATED JAN 1, 2014 2:29 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (AP)
The Milwaukee Bucks caught the Los Angeles Lakers in one of their worst ruts in decades, and Brandon Knight was able to take full advantage.

''My teammates did a great job of running the floor and running the lanes and creating plays for one another, and I think that opened it up for me and a lot of other guys,'' Knight said. ''But it started with our defense. We got after it. Part of that was them missing shots, but I want to give credit to our guys for contesting those shots.''

The Lakers ended the year the same way they began it - with six straight losses. They had never ended a calendar year with more than three consecutive defeats in any of the franchise's 65 previous seasons. Los Angeles will begin the new year 13-19 - the team's first losing record since the 2002-03 season, when they also started out 13-19 following their third straight championship.

The year was a distinctly sobering one for the Lakers, who mourned the passing of flamboyant owner Jerry Buss, longtime executive Bill Sharman and Vern Mikkelsen, who helped the team win four NBA titles in Minneapolis. They also got swept in the first round of the playoffs and had star-crossed Kobe Bryant in the lineup for only six games so far this season.

Adding insult to Bryant's injuries was the end of a 320-game home sellout streak last month.

LOS ANGELES -- It was New Year's resolutions time for the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, only the franchise's same old woes of 2013 -- injuries, inconsistent play, a general feeling of malaise -- stuck around for one more night before the calendar flipped to Jan. 1.

"I guess everybody wishes for the best, but I'm just trying to get to 2014," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said before the game. "There's still a long ways to go."

If only D'Antoni's team could be as on point with its execution as he was with that prophetic statement.

What was the most depressing part about Tuesday night? It's a tough one. Was it that the Lakers scored a season-low 33 points in the first half? Was it that they had another player (Jordan Farmar) leave the game early because of an injury, another player (Chris Kaman) held out of the lineup because of a sore ankle and yet another player (Wesley Johnson) not even make it to the arena with his stomach illness? Was it that they lost to a Milwaukee team that came into Tuesday having lost eight of its last nine game to contribute to its league-worst 6-24 record? Or perhaps it was that the Lakers' losing streak reached a season-high six games? Maybe the boos the team was greeted by as it stalked off the court at the end of the night?

It was ugly any way you slice it. How ugly? A brief, but loud "We want Phil!" chant broke out among a small faction of fans at Staples Center in the fourth quarter.

Actually, the most depressing part about Tuesday night has to be the sobering realization that not even Phil Jackson and his 11 championship rings could help this team in turmoil.

Bucks cruise past health-challenged Lakers
Wed Jan 1, 2014 1:32am EST

LOS ANGELES -- Misery loves company. The cliche couldn't be more appropriate for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Milwaukee guard Brandon Knight scored a career-high 37 points, and the Bucks earned a 94-79 victory Tuesday night over the reeling Lakers before a sellout crowd of 18,997 at Staples Center.

The Bucks, who have the worst record in the NBA at 7-24 and own a 4-12 mark on the road, ended a three-game losing streak and won for the second time in 10 games. They also extended the Lakers' skid to a season-high six games.

Injuries continue to take a toll on the Lakers, who lost Jordan Farmar on Tuesday. The point guard left the game with hamstring tightness, and he is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam Wednesday.

For Milwaukee, however, the New Year's Eve game was a celebratory affair.

"My teammates did a great job (of) just running the floor, running the lanes, and I think that opened it up for me," said Knight, who hit 15 of 25 shots from the floor, including three of eight 3-point attempts. "But it started with our defense. We got after it defensively. Part of it was them missing shots, but I also want to give credit to our guys for contesting those shots.

"Guys did a great job of just playing hard and sticking with it and keeping the energy up. We normally have lapses, but I thought we did a great job tonight of taking their runs and fighting back."

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Brandon Knight scored 18 of his career-high 37 points in the third quarter and the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Los Angeles Lakers 94-79 Tuesday night.

The Lakers ended the year the same way they began it — with six straight losses. They had never ended a calendar year with more than three consecutive defeats in any of the franchise’s 65 previous seasons. Los Angeles will begin the new year 13-19 — the team’s first losing record since the 2002-03 season, when they also started out 13-19 following their third straight NBA title.

The year was a distinctly sobering one for the Lakers, who mourned the passing of flamboyant owner Jerry Buss, longtime executive Bill Sharman and Vern Mikkelsen, who helped the team win four NBA titles in Minneapolis. Adding insult to Bryant’s injuries was the end of a 320-game home sellout streak last month.

Pau Gasol and Nick Young each scored 25 points for the Lakers, who shot 35.8 percent from the field. Young, who led the team in scoring in each of the previous six games as a reserve, made his seventh start of the season.

Trailing by 20 with 9:43 remaining, the Lakers closed to 86-79 with a 26-4 run capped by Kendall Marshall’s 3-pointer with 3:21 to play. But the determined Bucks were able to close it out for their second victory in 10 games.

Lakers, Cavs talks continue
January 1, 2014
BRIAN WINDHORST AND RAMONA SHELBURNE via SPORTSCENTER

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers continued discussions Tuesday on a deal centered around former teammates Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, but sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the outcome of Kyrie Irving's forthcoming MRI exam is likely to have a big impact on how the talks proceed from here.

Irving told reporters Tuesday night that he felt a "pop" in his left knee after suffering the injury during Cleveland's loss to the Indiana Pacers. Irving was initially cleared to return to the game after he went down in the third quarter, but he confessed afterward that the knee felt weak as he played on in the fourth quarter. An MRI is scheduled for Wednesday.
If Irving is out for a substantial length of time, it's believed that the Cavaliers' appetite to take on additional salary in pursuit of a playoff push would inevitably be diminished.

The Lakers, meanwhile, remained firm Tuesday in their insistence on acquiring additional assets from the Cavaliers in addition to Bynum's cap-friendly contract in exchange for the four-time All-Star from Spain.

Although a swap sending Gasol to Cleveland and reacquiring Bynum -- with the intent of releasing him by Jan. 7 when the second half of Bynum's $12.25 million salary becomes guaranteed -- could save the Lakers in excess of $20 million in salary and luxury-tax obligations at season's end, there is strong sentiment within the organization to give the current group time to get healthy, and resurrect its season before making any major moves, sources said.

ESPN reported Monday that the Cavs also have had separate discussions with the Chicago Bulls about a Bynum trade for Luol Deng, according to sources. The Bulls are in a similar position as the Lakers, about $8 million into the luxury tax and dealing with an injury-marred season.

Lakers' Jordan Farmar to miss at least four weeks with hamstring tear

By Zach Harper | NBA writer
January 1, 2014 3:51 pm ET

Jordan Farmar will be out for at least another four weeks. (USATSI)
The Los Angeles Lakers were without point guard Jordan Farmar for almost the entire month of December. A torn hamstring kept Farmar out of action for 10 of the team's 15 games in December and he only played one minute on December 1 when he injured his hamstring. During Tuesday night's loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, Farmar tore his hamstring for the second time in a month.

According to the Los Angeles Lakers' press release, Farmar suffered a tear in the same hamstring but a different area of the tendon. He's expected to miss at least four weeks with this tear after missing three-and-a-half weeks with the previous tear.

Lakers guard Jordan Farmar had an ultrasound test and was examined by Dr. Luga Podesta this morning after injuring his left hamstring in last night's game versus the Milwaukee Bucks. Results show that Farmar has a tear in his left hamstring, which is expected to keep him out a minimum of four weeks. Although the hamstring tear is in the same leg, this tear is in a different location than the tear that Farmar suffered on December 1, which kept him out three-and-a-half weeks.

Jordan Farmar has tight hamstring
Updated: January 1, 2014, 2:28 AM ET
By Dave McMenamin | ESPNLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- Jordan Farmar could be back on the shelf after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers' 94-79 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday early because of tightness in his left hamstring.

"It's restrictive and every now and then it's a sharp pain so I just really want to be careful," Farmar said after the game. "I don't want to take a huge step backwards."

He is scheduled for an ultrasound on his hamstring Wednesday to evaluate the injury.

"It's extremely frustrating, but it's part of the game I guess," Farmar said.

The 27-year-old point guard came into Tuesday averaging 9.1 points and 4.6 assists on the season. He exited the Bucks game with 6:34 remaining in the third quarter, going scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting from the field in 20 minutes while collecting seven assists and four rebounds.

Farmar said he felt "a little tug" in his hamstring while playing defense in the second half, causing him to check out of the game. He said he hopes the discomfort is just being caused by scar tissue from the tear in his hamstring that recently healed.

"It's back to feeling something there now and being nervous to really just pull through it and have it tear completely again," Farmar said.

Bucks, and more injuries, too much for the Lakers

By Eric Pincus
December 31, 2013, 9:59 p.m.

The Lakers aren't tanking but injuries are getting the job done.
Facing the worst team (by record) in the NBA, the Lakers fell to the Milwaukee Bucks, 94-79, on Tuesday night, welcoming the New Year with a thud.

Brandon Knight scored a career-high 37 points, including 18 in the third quarter.

The Lakers started the game by missing 11 shots in a row. A late fourth-quarter run wasn't enough to make up a deficit that had grown to 22 points in the third quarter.

Nick Young and Pau Gasol led the Lakers with 25 points each. Gasol returned from bronchitis and a sinus infection but managed to play 37 minutes.

Kobe Bryant (knee), Steve Blake (elbow), Steve Nash (back), Xavier Henry (knee) and Wesley Johnson (gastroenteritis) all sat out against the Bucks.

Jordan Farmar also left with 6:34 remaining in the third quarter with tightness in his recently healed hamstring after playing 20 minutes, missing all five of his shot attempts. He'll be examined via ultrasound on Wednesday.

Recent signee Kendall Marshall had 10 points and seven assists in 28 minutes, the only other Laker in double figures.

Milwaukee shot 44.0% from the field. Ersan Ilyasova scored 15 and Luke Ridnour 11.

The Lakers shot just 35.8% from the field, struggling to hit shots for most of the night starting with a dreadful first quarter at 23.8%.

Trade talks

IT’S A TESTAMENT to the state of competitiveness -- and high stakes -- in the National Basketball Association that the rumor mill is already churning fast even though the new year has just begun. The latest piece of news puts the Lakers and Cavaliers in the forefront of trade talks said to involve big men Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. That no eyebrows were raised when the grapevine first shook underscores both the desire of the teams to improve their plight and their fragile relationship with the players they apparently deem expendable, albeit for contrasting reasons.

Of the two, Gasol obviously has the potential to be more productive on the court. Given the proper motivation and under the right conditions, he possesses the tools to be an all-star, his advancing age and increasing susceptibility to injury notwithstanding. However, his prohibitive price tag vis-a-vis Bynum’s more cap-friendly one makes a swap a reasonable proposition.

It's a new year in the NBA, a year where LeBron James is the best player on the planet, the San Antonio Spurs are the team to beat in the Western Conference and the New York Knicks are completely dysfunctional. Okay, so that might have been cut-and-pasted from the start of last year, but this might indeed be a brand new year for the NBA, one where potential postseason contenders have to survive serious injuries to their best players, where Andrew Bynum faces an uncertain future and... Wait, none of these really scream "current news" either, do they?

Knight and Bucks down sliding Lakers

Los Angeles, CA Sports.com — Brandon Knight had a career-high 37 points with eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 94-79 win over the Los Angeles Lakers from Staples Center.

Ersan Ilyasova recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Luke Ridnour added 11 points in the win for the Bucks, who snapped a three- game losing skid.

"Our start helped a great deal," said Bucks coach Larry Drew. "Brandon played a terrific game at both ends. We fed off him."

Pau Gasol and Nick Young each donated 25 points in Los Angeles' season-high sixth straight loss.

Kendall Marshall finished with 10 points and seven assists in the loss.

LA starters Jodie Meeks, Shawne Williams, and Jordan Farmar combined for nine points on 4-for-19 from the field.

2013: Social Year of the Mamba

Kobe Bryant's 2013 on the court wasn't great, but it was all thumbs-up for the Mamba in social media.
It'd be hard to make the case that 2013 was one of Kobe Bryant's better years in the NBA. When it began, the Los Angeles Lakers' superteam was struggling to come together. Bryant led a late playoff push, only to be sidelined by a ruptured Achilles tendon and be forced to watch as the Lakers were swept in the first round. Dwight Howard bolted, and a makeshift Lakers roster awaited Bryant's return, only to see the star suffer a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for the next few weeks.

But in the space of social media, 2013 was nothing short of the Year of the Mamba. Prior to 2013, Bryant had maintained an official Facebook presence and his wife had been active on Instagram, but his social presence exploded quickly after he joined Twitter on Jan. 4.

Andrew Bynum Trade Rumors: Kyrie Irving Injury Forces Pau Gasol Deal, Luol Deng Not Option as Lakers, Cavaliers in Serious Negotiations

As the NBA trade deadline slowly approaches the three biggest names being tossed around are Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Luol Deng. Bynum threw a wrench into everyone's trade plans when he was suspended by the Cleveland Cavaliers and officially made available after demonstrating conduct detrimental to the team. Numerous teams have expressed interest in the big man including the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls who are interested in swapping out Deng and Gasol.

The picture is becoming much more clear now as the Chicago Tribune reports the Bulls are removing themselves from the Bynum negotiations, not eager to switch out Deng for Bynum. K.C. Johnson reports that the Bulls could trade for Bynum by Jan. 7 and then waive him, getting ride of the $12.25 million the center is owed and end up saving roughly $20 million in salary and tax payments. While that is appealing, Chicago is not interested.

According to the Tribune, the Bulls are more interested in winning right now instead of cost cutting for the future. Deng has been thought to be on the trade blocks considering his expiring contract and failed negotiations at an extension. The Bulls still hold out hope they can re-sign the forward

Think I missed this yesterday or it is a rehash of Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times article posted yesterday. Not posting Bleacher reports and won't unless one looks good to me.

Lakers don't deny Pau Gasol for Andrew Bynum rumors

December 31, 2013

Late this morning, sources close to the situation downplayed rumors of a trade that would send Pau Gasol to the Cleveland Cavaliers, returning Andrew Bynum to the Lakers roster.

Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times reported just moments ago:

"...the Lakers would want more value for Gasol in a trade and, additionally, that it would be a stretch for the Lakers to reacquire Bynum, who is indefinitely suspended by the Cavaliers for conduct detrimental to the team."
Notice what was not included in the quote above? A denial, that is what is missing.

Instead, the person familiar with the talks stressed the necessity of getting more in return for sending Gasol out of Los Angeles. Draft pick? Perhaps.

To answer the burning question of why the Lakers would want the problem man-child named Andrew Bynum back in purple and gold, is that they don't.

The Lakers woke up on New Year's Day closer to last place than a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

And their new starting point guard appears to be Kendall Marshall.

Jordan Farmar will miss at least four weeks after sustaining another tear in his left hamstring Tuesday, presumably making Marshall the sixth Lakers player to start at the point.

Marshall was hanging out in a hotel room in Texas when the Lakers called him two weeks ago. He was waiting for his Delaware 87ers to play an NBA Development League game against the Austin Toros.

Marshall hasn't done much in four games, averaging 5.3 points and 2.5 assists. Assuming Coach Mike D'Antoni goes with him instead of Jodie Meeks at point guard, Marshall will be part of the Lakers' 18th lineup in 33 games.

Before the depth of Farmar's injury was known, D'Antoni answered with humor when asked what he'd do if Farmar missed significant time.

The Genius Reason Why The Lakers May Trade For Andrew Bynum Just To Cut Him

Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum

The Los Angeles Lakers have discussed trading Pau Gasol to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Andrew Bynum according to Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com.

On the surface, the move seems surprising since Gasol is still a productive player and there are reports that Bynum is no longer interested in playing basketball. But the trade would actually be a genius move that would save the Lakers more than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes.

The second-half of Bynum's salary for this season, as well as his salary for the 2014-15 season are only guaranteed if he is still on a roster on January 7. So, if the trade is made before January 7, the Lakers can just cut Bynum and not have to pay the $18.7 million remaining on his contract.

In addition, by trading Gasol, who will be a free agent after the season, the Lakers would no longer be responsible for the nearly $10 million remaining on his contract. The reduction in payroll would also mean the Lakers would save millions in luxury taxes.

An MRI exam Wednesday showed that Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving has a left knee contusion and is questionable for Thursday night's game against the Orlando Magic, the team announced.

Irving tweeted about the injury Wednesday.

Scary moment but I'll be good, thanks for everyone's support and concern.

Irving set a goal to play in all 82 games this season, and hasn't missed one yet. The Cavs will likely take a cautious approach with Irving and may sit him for a game or two.

He is considered day to day.

Pau Gasol-Andrew Bynum Trade Rumor Indicates Salary Dump
Published by Bogar Alonso on January 1, 2014.

The gamble the playoff-hopeful Cleveland Cavaliers took on Andrew Bynum was a bust. Though he showed flashes of his old self this season, he has begrudgingly admitted that he might never be the same player again and his detrimental conduct only compounds his falling worth. Following the 76ers’ footsteps, the Cavs are said to be eager to part ways with the towering heap of trouble, with the latest trade rumor putting Bynum back in a Laker jersey in exchange for Pau Gasol and other assets.

The modern-era Lakers are known for their head-scratching management decisions but they’re not actually interested in giving the big guy another go. So keep the tears in check. This would strictly be a salary dump for them.

You’d only have to look at their history with the disgruntled and disjointed center to know the organization has no plans to give Bynum court time. They know all too well about Bynum’s lack of professionalism. Whether he was swatting point guard-sized gnats out of the air or exhibiting a lack of commitment to the game of basketball, the Lakers organization were willing to give up on his upside in exchange for rights to Dwight Howard and his own diva complex knowing that Bynum brings too much baggage with him. In short, Buss and Co. are not on a suicide mission.

What should Cleveland Cavaliers do with Andrew Bynum?

5:54 PM, January 1, 2014 | 0 Comments

Andrew Bynum has not been happy in his time with the Cavaliers. / David Richard, USA TODAY Sports

by Jeff Zillgitt, USA TODAY Sports

If the Cleveland Cavaliers want to wash their hands of center Andrew Bynum sooner rather than later, they have less than a week to make a cost-saving decision.

Just $6 million of Bynum's $12.2 million salary is guaranteed this season, but the deal becomes fully guaranteed if he is not waived by Jan. 7.

While the Cavaliers signed Bynum to a friendly, mostly low-risk deal, they face a predicament. They suspended Bynum for one game without pay Saturday and excused him indefinitely from all team activities. Now what?

Bynum was not 100% committed to Cleveland's rebuilding process and had turned into a distraction. In the big picture, it's not devastating that Bynum didn't fit with Cavs, but they probably didn't expect the relationship to dissolve two months into the season.

Despite pain, limited mobility and playing time, Bynum is averaging 20.2 points, 12.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per 48 minutes. He still has something to offer that is in demand â?? size, strength and interior presence.

Now the Cavaliers have three options: Keep Bynum, trade him or waive him. USA TODAY Sports breaks down each choice.
